Danny Mars hit an RBI double in the top of the first inning to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead. Grant Kay’s two-out, two-run single in the second made it 3-0. Kay added another two- out, RBI single in the top of the sixth. Kevin Lachance put the Goldeyes on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth before Dogs’ closer Jeff Kinley converted a five-out save to end the game. Eduard Reyes started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits in 5.0 innings. Reyes walked five and struck out four. Earlier in the evening, the Goldeyes and Dogs completed the game suspended on August 12 th at Impact Field. The Goldeyes won the game 9-5, adding a run on a two-out, RBI single from Deon Stafford in the top of the ninth when play resumed. Travis Seabrooke picked up the win in relief and is now 6-0 on the season. Donnie Hart completed a four-out save, and now has nine on the year with the Goldeyes. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE DOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 17-26 all-time against the Chicago Dogs, including an 8-11 record in home games, and a 7-6 record at Shaw Park. The Dogs are in their fourth season of existence, and are based out of the Village of Rosemont, Illinois. Rosemont is located 18 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The Dogs play at state-of-the-art Impact Field, a $60 Million facility with a seating capacity of 6,300. The Dogs were one of the six teams to participate in the shortened, 60-game 2020 American Association season. Chicago finished with a record of 26-32 in 2020. In 2019, the Dogs were 59-41, which was good for the third-best record in the American Association. The Dogs were 45-54 during their expansion season in 2018, finishing 34-27 following an 11-27 start. Former Major League player and manager Butch Hobson is in his fourth year as Dogs’ manager. Hobson enjoyed an eight-year playing career in the Majors with the Boston Red Sox, California Angels, and New York Yankees. In 1977, Hobson hit 30 home runs and had 112 RBI for Boston. Hobson is in his 32 nd season managing in professional baseball, and skippered the Red Sox from 1992-94. Hobson has extensive experience managing in independent baseball, and is one of only five managers in the history of the industry with more than 1,000 wins. Hobson led the Nashua Pride (Atlantic League/Can-Am League) for eight seasons, including an Atlantic League championship in 2000 and a Can-Am League title in 2007. Hobson also guided the Atlantic League’s Lancaster Barnstormers for six years, winning a championship in 2014. In 2017, Hobson led the Low-A Midwest League’s Kane County Cougars (Arizona Diamondbacks) to a 72-65 record. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 48-45, and eliminated from postseason contention. The Goldeyes were just swept in a three-game series by the Gary SouthShore RailCats at US Steel Yard. The Goldeyes are fourth in the American Association in hitting (.282), 10 th in pitching (5.74), and tied for seventh in fielding (.978). The Chicago Dogs are 59-35, in first place in the North, and 3.0 games ahead of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The Dogs have clinched a playoff spot in the North Division. The Dogs just lost two of three to the RedHawks at Impact Field. The Dogs are sixth in the league in batting (.274), tied for first in pitching (4.33), and tied for third in defence (.981). This is the last of four head-to-head series this season between Winnipeg and Chicago. The Goldeyes were 3-6 against the Dogs last year. TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with rookie PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS right-hander Dylan Burns who is 1-2 with a 6.08 ERA in five 9/2 vs. CHI: RHP Landen Bourassa (3-0, 2.25) vs. LHP Shane Barringer (2-0, 1.57) starts and one relief appearance this season. Burns took a no-decision at Milwaukee last Wednesday, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings. Burns walked one and struck out one. The Milkmen won the game 9-8. Burns recently completed his college career at the University of South Florida (Tampa, Florida) where he was 5-5 with a 4.32 ERA for the Bulls in 10 starts and eight relief appearances. Burns struck out 84 and allowed just six home runs in 77.0 innings as a fifth-year senior. Burns picked up the win in relief in the Bulls’ opening game at the NCAA Regionals vs. the University of Florida, and helped South Florida reach the Super Regionals against the University of Texas. Burns was a combined 10-8 with two saves and a 4.77 ERA at South Florida from 2016-21 in 74 games, 15 of them as a starting pitcher. Burns combined for 159 strikeouts in 179.1 collegiate innings. Burns is 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA in one career start against Chicago. Burns is 1-0 with a 3.37 ERA in two career starts at Shaw Park. The Dogs go with rookie right-hander Kyle Murphy who is 3-2 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts since signing with the Dogs as a true rookie on July 30 th . Murphy took the loss vs. Fargo-Moorhead last Friday, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. Murphy walked two and struck out three. Murphy has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his first six professional starts. Murphy finished his college career at Northeastern University (Boston, Massachusetts) this past spring, and was 6-1 with a 3.86 ERA for the Huskies in 12 starts and one relief appearance. Murphy was a combined 16-13 with six saves and a 4.31 ERA in 34 starts and 47 relief appearances during his five seasons at Northeastern from 2017-21. Murphy averaged 9.1 strikeouts per nine innings during his college career, and ranks third in program history with 250 strikeouts. Murphy is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in one career start against Winnipeg. Tonight will be Murphy’s first career appearance at Shaw Park. GOLDEYES RETURN HOME: The Winnipeg Goldeyes returned to Shaw Park on Tuesday, August 3 rd with a 14-6 win over the Sioux City Explorers. It marked the Goldeyes’ first official home game since September 2 nd , 2019, which was a span of 701 days. A total of 20 games over 19 home dates were added to the remaining schedule. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION POSTSEASON FORMAT ADJUSTED: On August 4 th , the American Association announced an expanded playoff format. The top three teams in each division by winning percentage will now qualify for the postseason. The second- and third-place teams in each division will meet in a one-game playoff. The winner of the playoff game will face the winner from their own division in a best-of-five Division Series. The Division Series winners then meet in a best-of-five American Association Championship Series. The format originally called for the top two teams in each division qualifying for the postseason and immediately meeting in the Division Series. 99 GAMES: The second game of the scheduled double header on August 22 nd between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Kane County Cougars was cancelled due to rain. As per American Association rules, since August 22 nd marked the final scheduled day of games between the clubs this season, the contest will not be made up. As a result, the Goldeyes can play a maximum of 99 games out of the 100 originally scheduled 2021. This marks only the second time in the last 11 years in which the Goldeyes will fall short of a complete regular season schedule. The Goldeyes last fell short in 2015 when they played 99 out of 100 games. Prior to that, the Goldeyes had not lost a game from their schedule since 2010, which was their final season in the Northern League. FAMOUS AMOS RETURNS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed infielder Amos Ramon on August 27 th . Ramon, 38, returns after playing four seasons for the Goldeyes (2006, 2011-13). Ramon was the MVP of the 2012 American Association playoffs, helping the Goldeyes win their first championship since 1994. MARTIN SETS GOLDEYES RBI RECORD: Goldeyes’ first baseman Kyle Martin hit a pair of RBI doubles on August 12 th at Chicago before the game was suspended in the top of the ninth. The two RBI were Martin’s 89 th and 90 th of the 2021 season, which matched Juan Diaz’s franchise single-season record set in 2009. The game was completed on August 31 st , but is recorded as having been played on August 12 th . The following night at Kane County (August 13 th ), Martin hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth for the record-breaking 91 st RBI.
