The International Aloe Science Council Presents an Aloe Scientific Primer International Aloe Science Council Commonly Traded Aloe Species The plant Aloe spp. has long been utilized in a variety of ways throughout history, which has been well documented elsewhere and need not be recounted in detail here, particularly as the purpose of this document is to discuss current and commonly traded aloe species. Aloe, in its various species, can presently and in the recent past be found in use as a decorative element in homes and gardens, in the creation of pharmaceuticals, in wound care products such as burn ointment, sunburn protectant and similar applications, in cosmetics, and as a food, dietary supplements and other health and nutrition related items. Recently, various species of the plant have even been used to weave into clothing and in mattresses. Those species of Aloe commonly used in commerce today can be divided into three primary categories: those used primarily in the production of crude drugs, those used primarily for decorative purposes, and those used in health, nutritional and related products. For reference purposes, this paper will outline the primary species and their uses, but will focus on the species most widely used in commerce for health, nutritional, cosmetic and supplement products, such as aloe vera. Components of aloe vera currently used in commerce The Aloe plant, and in particular aloe vera, has three distinct raw material components that are processed and found in manufactured goods: leaf juice; inner leaf juice; and aloe latex. A great deal of confusion regarding the terminology of this botanical and its components has been identified, mostly because of a lack of clear definitions, marketing, and other factors. -

It acts as a natural fighter against all classes of infection, an important effective anti-oxidant, helps in treating all digestion related problems, heartburns, arthritis, stress, kidney-stone, skins-burns, diabetes, rheumatism, pain, asthma, cancer, AIDS, It also acts as a laxative beauty enhancer and produced that effect on lowering blood sugar level in diabetics and maintain the blood sugar. It is commonly known as Barbados or Curaçao Aloe, is an herbal medicine with a long traditional use in different cultures. The main limitation of the current clinical knowledge about aloe vera gel is small clinical studies that often lack rigorous methodology. Several clinical trials are being conducted to further evaluate the use of aloe vera gel for a variety of disorders, as well as to further confirm traditional uses of the plant extract. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbol- ises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Abstact: Aloe vera is a natural product that is now a day frequently used in the field of Cosmetology.Though there are various indications for its use, controlled trials are needed to determine its real efficacy. Aloe vera belongs to family Xanthorrhoeaceae (APG III System, 2009) commonly known as Ghrit Kumari, is the oldest medicinal plant ever known and the most applied medicinal plant worldwide. Aloe vera is used for vigor, wellness and medicinal purposes since rigvedic times. Health benefits of aloe vera include its application in wound healing, treating burns minimizing frost bite damage, protection against skin damaged from x-rays ,lung cancer, intestinal problems, Increasing High Density Lipoproteins(HDL), reducing Low Density Lipoproteins(LDL), reducing blood sugar in diabetics , fighting acquired Immuno Deficiency Sysdrome (AIDS),allergies and improving immune system. Phytochemistry of aloe vera gel has revealed the presence more than 200 boiactive chemicals. Aloe vera gel is extracted from its leaves and appropriate processing technique are needed for stabilization as well as preparation of the end products. Aloe vera gel contains important ingredients including 19 of 20 amino acids needed by the human body and 7 of the 8 essential once that just can not be made. In industries Aloe vera is also used to extract liver tonic. The present research article is an efforts towards the industrial and ethno- botanical properties of Aloe vera. -

In this study, we assessed the species-level discriminatory power of the standard (rbcLa + matK) and complementary barcodes ITS1 and trnH-psbA within the subfamily Alooideae (Asphodelaceae), a large, recent plant radiation whose species are important in horticulture yet are threatened. Alooideae has its centre of endemism in southern Africa with some outlier species occurring elsewhere in Africa and Madagascar. We sampled 360 specimens representing 235 species within all 11 genera of the subfamily. Applying three distance-based methods, all markers perform poorly for our combined dataset with the highest proportion of correct species-level specimen identifications of 30% found for ITS1. -

The aloe vera or succulent has a long history of being used for medicinal purposes, dating back to ancient Egypt. The plant is native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands. It’s used in traditional Indian medicine for constipation, skin diseases, worm infestation, infections and as natural remedy for colic. In Chinese medicine, it’s often recommended in the treatment of fungal diseases, and in the Western world, it has found widespread use in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. The plant Aloe vera is used in Ayurvedic, Homoeopathic and Allopathic streams of medicine, and not only tribal community but also most of the people for food and medicine. The plant leaves contains numerous vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, natural sugars and other bioactive compounds with emollient, purgative, anti-microbial, anti inflammatory, antioxidant, aphrodisiac, anti-helmenthic, antifungal, antiseptic and cosmetic values for health care. This plant has potential to cure sunburns, burns and minor cuts, and even skin cancer. The external use in cosmetic primarily acts as skin healer and prevents injury of epithelial tissues, cures acne and gives a youthful glow to skin, also acts as extremely powerful laxative. As aloevera has a great therapeutic and medicinal value, therefore; it is better to use herbal medicine in modern ways rather than using traditional methods.
