BRAZOS COUNTY IMMIGRANTS vol.1 compiled by Bill PAGE

Introduction

This work is the first volume of a continuing series concerning the foreign-born population of Brazos Co. and their families. The compiler will emphasize naturalization records, but will also include various other records.

Researchers should check for all possible spellings of names. The compiler has encountered wide discrepancies in spellings, often within a single document. Sometimes names have been translated, so that a man named “Jan” may listed as “John” or “Giuseppe” may be listed as “Joe.” In other cases, handwritten documents were almost illegible. And, the compiler has doubtless made some mistakes.

People interested in Polish settlers should check Joanne DOMINIK GLOWSKI's articles in the Polish Genealogical Society of Texas' PGST News, vol.9, no.4 (Winter 1992). People studying Italians should read The Italians of Steele's Store Texas, by Rosemary DePASQUALE BOYKIN. TABLE OF CONTENTS

This work abstracts data from photocopies of “loose” naturalization papers; the copies are in the possession of the Brazos Genealogical Association. The handwriting was often difficult to read, and errors may have been made in abstracting the information. Many entries have been annotated with information from passenger lists and other sources.

"Austria" refers to the Austro-Hungarian empire, not the modern country of Austria; many people who list Austria as their birth-place were from Bohemia or Moravia. Records may use "Bohemia" and "Moravia" interchangeably, although they are different areas.

People from Poland may be listed under Austria, Germany or Russia. Many of the Polish settlers were from the province of Galicia.

Many people who indicated that they were born in were from either the town of in the province of or the town of Poggioreale in the , in .

NATURALIZATIONS IN 1910 BRAZOS COUNTY CENSUS

The 1910 census asked what year people had come to the U.S., and whether they were aliens or naturalized citizens. The following lists people in the 1910 Brazos Co. census who indicated that they were naturalized citizens. While useful, these records probably contain errors. Some people may not have remembered dates correctly, and some people were doubtlessly confused about the naturalization process. Also, some of these people were probably naturalized in other counties before they moved to Brazos Co. Portions of the census were difficult to read, and mistakes may have been made in transcribing some names.

"Austria" refers to the Austro-Hungarian empire, not the modern country of Austria. Records may use "Bohemia" and "Moravia" interchangeably, although they are different areas. People from Poland may be listed under Austria, Germany or Russia.

Abbreviations include:

Aust. -- Austria Ger. -- Germany Hun. -- Hungary Pol. -- Poland Prus. -- Prussia Russ. -- Russia Switz.-- Switzerland

Census entries include the following notations:

a or al -- alien (not included in this list) na -- naturalized citizen pa -- papers applied for ?

The census records for the following indicate their status as “na”, unless this listing includes a note indicating that the census shows that they are “pa” instead of “na”.

BRAZOS COUNTY NATURALIZATION RECORDS 1851-1890

Before 1890, various Brazos County records list naturalizations. This article abstracts microfilmed Brazos Co. naturalization records not on film reel #1020044. That reel contains records from 1890-1906, plus an index to records from 1851 to 1941. The index also cites some items at the court house which were not filmed, including some records from before 1890. That index omits about 10% of the filmed records before 1890.

Many entries in this article have been supplemented with additional information. The compiler has tried to link names in the naturalization records with other forms of the names as they appear in censuses, county records and other sources. However, errors may have been made. Check the original records.

Some of the original records may contain errors. A list dated 19 November 1873, for example, appears in vol. E of the District Court Civil Minutes. Although it says the men were subjects of the Queen of England, their names appear Italian (ACONDRO, ARISTO, CORDIA, etc.) The clerk writing the records may have made a mistake, but no proof of that has been seen.

"Austria" refers to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, not the modern country of Austria. Many records use "Bohemia" and "Moravia" interchangeably, although they refer to different areas.

In 1921 Texas passed a law requiring aliens who owned land in Texas to register at the county court house. Although aliens were generally prohibited from owning real estate, many had nonetheless acquired land. These records provide information on immigrants which may not appear in other sources.

The records indicate that the information was originally filed at the court house, and then later copied into the record book. Thus, errors may have been occurred during that process. p.2.
