Welcome to the 2018 Donate Life Transplant Games

It is exciting to return to Salt Lake City, the host of the 1996 U.S. Transplant Games, as well as the 2002 Winter Olympics. This is a community known for world-class events and unparalleled hospitality. The planning for these games has been outstanding, and there have been thousands of hours put in to make the Games unique and special for everyone.

We lay claim to the fact that we are the largest advocacy group for donation and transplantation in the world, and your presence here helps communicate that message. While we celebrate the amazing achievements of medical and pharmaceutical teams in changing lives for thousands of patients, we also honor the sacrifice of those who gave the gift of life. Gathering here, we demonstrate to the world that we have a story to tell, but more importantly, a reason for telling it.

Our work is not done; there still remain 115,000 patients in need of a life-saving organ. Over 500,000 indi- viduals still undergo dialysis on a weekly basis. Many more individuals living in a post-transplant and post-donation world need a variety of services and often have nowhere to turn. We consider this event to be an opportunity to demonstrate the power of a unified voice.

The next six days are filled with competitions, special events, and activities. Enjoy your time in Salt Lake City and be sure to thank a vol- unteer or two who have worked so hard to make the 2018 Donate Life Transplant Games the best ever.

Best wishes, Bill Bill Ryan President & CEO

As the organization continued to grow and expand, IDS was on the fore- front of living kidney donation, when in 2003, they took responsibility for screening coordination for all non-di- rected living kidney donation. Turning over screening to the transplant centers occurred in 2015 when staffing resources became available from the Good Samaritan Programs. However, IDS continues to educate the pub- lic about the opportunities to save lives through living donation.

Today, under the strong leadership of Tracy Schmidt, Executive Director, Intermountain Donor Services continues to thrive and play an important role in the community. Their mission is to save and enhance lives through excellence in organ and tissue recovery as well as to facilitate meaning and healing for donor families thanks to the generosity of their loved one’s gifts.

An example of their commitment was the creation of the “Celebration of Life Monument” which officially opened in June of 2017. Workshops

Workshops are an important part of the Transplant Games. Workshop programming is meant to help attract a broader audience for the games, and to create additional activities for donors, recipients, donor families, and donation and trans- plant professionals.

The workshops cover an array of topics and will take place at the Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center on Sunday and Monday, August 5-6, 2018. Look for a complete listing of all the workshops and rooms in the Transplant Games Event Schedule on pages 44-48 of this program. Although many attendees signed up for the workshops while registering, you can still sign up on-site at the convention center, if there are spots available.

A full description of each workshop can be found at the workshop sign up table in the convention center.

This year we have an exciting addition to our educational programming. The American Society of Transplantation has joined forces with the Transplant Life Foundation and is offering a series of programs as part of their Power2Save initia- tive (Power2Save.org).

We are happy to have AST hosting one of their Transplant Community Summits this year at the 2018 Donate Life Trans- plant Games. The Summit is designed to bring together recipients, living donors, caregivers, donor families, transplant providers, policy makers and major stockholders to facilitate networking and education. The goal is that the Summit will result in patient driven partnerships with stakeholders in the transplant community. In addition to a full schedule of ses- sions, AST will have some TGA Live! programming on stage, in the TGA Village. For a full listing of the AST sessions and live programming, please turn to the Transplant Games Event Schedule on pages 44-48 in this program.

Reflection Room

Check out the Reflection Room in the TGA Village where individuals can take a few moments to pause and reflect on our courageous donors. A loop of donor photos will run continually in the Reflection Room, designed for a moment of special recognition to honor donors through thought and prayer.

Quilt Squares, Pinning and Display

Have you ever created a quilt square for a loved one? This incredibly healing exercise done by so many in the transplant community, has yielded some amazing quilts. The various techniques used to create a quilt square have expanded over the years, and now it is possible to create a quilt square using a computer. There will be a workshop, with a $20 fee, dedi- cated to learning this process. Many people have signed up through registration, but you can sign up onsite at the Games, if you are still interested.

If you are bringing a quilt square to the Games, attending one of the workshops to create one or just want to get some in- sight into how these quilt squares are used, and the raw emo- tion behind them, plan to attend the quilt pinning ceremony Sunday, Aug.5, 2018 in the Salt Palace Convention Center from 3:00-5:00pm.

Quilts will be on display for most of the week in the conven- tion center, so be sure to take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to honor our heroes and champions for life.

Coffee Houses

The Transplant Life Foundation is pleased to present a series of Coffee House events as part of the 2018 Donate Life Transplant Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Coffee House is an informal gathering in an open mic setting where partici- pants can relax over a cup of coffee and share their personal stories with old and new friends. It is a time to remember and honor donors’ lives and celebrate recipients renewed life. Facilitators will be present at each coffee house to manage the microphone and flow of conversation.

Coffee House participants must be registered and have a credential. Sessions will take place Saturday and Sunday, August 4-5, 2018 at the Salt Palace Convention Center. For specific times and rooms, check the website (www.transplantgameso- famerica.org) or the Transplant Games Event Schedule on pages 44-48 of this program.

Using a similar format to the Coffee Houses, Teen Talk is a chance for just teens, 14 and over, to meet other teenagers at the Games and share their personal stories of how donation and transplantation has impacted their lives. A relaxed set- ting with music and pizza will be a great atmosphere for our teens to ask questions and hear about others journeys. Teen Talk participants must be registered and have a credential (on-site registration will be available). Sessions will take place Saturday August 4, 2018 at the convention center. For specific times and rooms, check the website (www.transplantgame- sofamerica.org) or the Transplant Games Event Schedule on pages 44-48 of this program.

Regarded as the father of transplantation

The Puzzle People: Memoirs of a Transplant Surgeon

Dr. Thomas Starzel is often referred to as “the father of transplantation.” He performed the first successful human liver transplant in 1967. His work was revolutionary, arousing much debate over the moral and ethical issues surrounding transplantation. This book is an autobiography of Dr. Starzel in his personal life and his work.

Dr. Starzel passed in 2017, but his widow, Joy Starzel, is joining us at the Games this year. She will be set up at a vendor booth in the TGA Village with copies of the book. You may “purchase” a book while supplies last – the cost is simply a donation. All the money donated for the books will go towards the TGA travel scholarship fund.

The Puzzle People can also be purchased online or at your local bookstore.

transplantgamesofamerica.org 55 Meet Blaze & Spark

Many of you have already met Blaze, our Donate Life Transplant Games, mascot. Blaze is based on the mythical bird “Phoenix” – a bird of magnificent stature who represents re-birth and regeneration. The lore includes the Phoenix rising from the ashes of a fiery death. Blaze, and now his smaller counterpart Spark, represent the spirit, energy and drive of recipients, donors and donor families. Both of the TGA mascots will be looking forward to greeting people in Salt Lake City at special events and competitions throughout the week. Blaze and Spark will frequent the Kids Zone in the TGA Vil- lage and a schedule of some of their other daily stops will be posted there as well. So, get a photo opportunity with Blaze and Spark and help them celebrate the gift of life this week!

Hi Kids! My name is Spark. I’ll see you in the Kids Zone in the TGA Village throughout the week
