4 February 2015 Three P&O Cruises’ Ships Sail into Sydney for Australia Day In an historic display, P&O Cruises’ entire fleet of three cruise ships spent Australia Day berthed in Sydney offering around 6000 guests a front row seat to all the action on the harbour. The trio began sailing through the heads at 530am with Pacific Dawn leading the way followed by Pacific Jewel and Pacific Pearl. Pacific Dawn anchored off Kurraba Point, Pacific Jewel at Athol Bay and Pacific Pearl anchoring at Point Piper. In an era of unsightly hulking superstructures and passenger capacities well into the thousands, the small ships of French cruise line Ponant stand out as rare examples of stylish naval architecture and intimate on-board ambience. Unheard of in Australia only a few years ago, Ponant has recently entered the increasingly competitive local market, highlighting growing interest in small-ship cruising in the region. Here are three early images of Sydney Cove, from where so many of the cruise ships depart. It is interesting to note that Sydney Cove is the official name but it was also called Semi-Circular Quay until the mid-late 1800’s when it became simply Circular Quay – but it is still officially Sydney Cove. Image No. 1, Campbell’s Cove and warehouses with the saw- tooth roof structure are still there, positioned between the Overseas Passenger Terminal from where so many cruise passengers embark on the ships and The Park Hyatt Sydney, just a stone’s throw from the Southern Pylon of the Harbour Bridge. In the immediate foreground are the remains of a fort on Dawes Point – the site where the first defensive guns for Sydney were installed. Image No. 2, clearly shows the semi-circular appearance of the Cove in 1892. The ships are berthed alongside the Eastern Side of the Quay which is where the walkway and restaurants, bars, etc., are now positioned as you walk to the Opera House. Take note of the number of Hansom Cabs drawn up to take passengers up-town after alighting from the ferries. Image No. 3, an interesting view looking along the wharves on East Circular Quay. The Opera House now stands beyond the tall building with the word ‘Stores” on its side. This image is from an era when steam ships still had to share the Cove with sailing ships. It was also an age when wharves abounded on all sides of Circular Quay.

On our recent Avalon Vista River Cruise we arrived after lunch at Rüdesheim, a very popular stop on the Rhine River. One of the main sightseeing attractions is Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Instrument Museum and we saw an impressive collection of automated musical instruments. Our guide took us on an eye-opening 45 minute tour where we listened to a selection of the 350 exhibits dating from the 18th to the 20th century. The tour ended in the museum shop where you can buy music boxes, bird cages and modern replicas of machines. Nearby is the cobblestone Drosselgasse, Rüdesheim’s main thoroughfare, with shops, inns and open-air wine gardens. We enjoyed a Rüdesheim coffee laced with Asbach brandy and topped with whipped cream. A popular attraction was the cable car ride. We experienced a most enjoyable afternoon.
