Noble Rot Meets Ecstatic Synth- Poppers Hot Chip Words by Dan Keeling Photographs by Benjamin Mcmahon
Words by Dan Keeling Noble Rot Photographs by meets ecstatic synth- SHOOT FROM THE CHIP SHOOT Benjamin McMahon poppers Hot Chip “Gordon Ramsay used to cook here a long time ago,” says Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, reading the menu at Chez Bruce in Wandsworth. “When I last ate here, a friend from uni was working in the kitchen and I absolutely loved it.” To Joe’s left, fellow band member Al Doyle is enjoying his first drink of the evening – Vouette & Sorbée ‘Saignée de Sorbée’ Champagne – after a day rehearsing in a nearby studio for the band’s imminent support headline slot at Hackney’s All Points East festival. With their new album heralding a high point in their long career (it’s their seventh), the aptly titled A Bath Full of Ecstasy has a blend Dan Keeling: Do you cook at home? Joe Goddard: I cook all the time. I’ve got a Green of synth melodies, bouncing house basslines Egg barbecue and cook a lot of seafood, as well as buying a lot of nice wines from Bottle Apostle to try and soulful vocals that makes it one of our to pair with it. I’m interested in the weirder side of wine. This Vouette & Sorbée reminds me of a records of the year at Rotter Towers. Imagine delicious sparkling red from near Barcelona that I’ve been drinking recently called La Rosita by Pamela Geddes. It’s dry and fruity: it tastes like sparkling Erasure jamming with Daft Punk, Laid Back and Ribena to me, and I’m into that! Frankie Knuckles in a lift, and you might be Al Doyle: It’s delicious and quite unusual – it almost tastes like Pét-Nat rather than Champagne. -

COREY ZALOOM (senior manager, digital marketing) and BROOKE SALISBURY (head of marketing) of Domino Recording Company explain how they set up the album by getting their catalogue streaming in order after the label acquired three of their previous albums from EMI/Parlophone, where live was used to reawaken interest in the band, how the video for ‘Hungry Child’ reached far beyond their core audience and why both Instagram and TikTok were key new platforms in the band’s marketing arsenal. Getting the band’s catalogue streaming Domino acquired the band’s EMI/ CZ: We had a few goals going into the change in three or four years, so in order before the new album Parlophone catalogue in early 2018 album in spring 2019 and one was things like Instagram were a new BS: This is only our third album with [covering three albums between 2006 and to reactivate their catalogue. ANALYSIS The Official UK Singles & Albums Charts are compiled by the Official Charts Company, based on a sample of more than 15,000 physical and digital outlets. They count actual sales and audio streams from last Friday to Thursday, based on sales of downloads, CDs, vinyl and other physical formats and audio streams weighted using SEA2 methodology. Highway to hell: Lewis Capaldi returns to top spot with debut album Q BY ALAN JONES ethroned by Bruce Springsteen last week, and trailing Will Young for much of the latest frame, Lewis DCapaldi edged past the latter to return to No.1. The Scot’s debut, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, bounces 3-1 to secure its fifth week at the summit, although its sales are off 21.00% week-on-week to 19,003 (including 11,085 from sales-equivalent streams) its lowest haul yet. Denied his fifth No.1 album at the death, Will Young’s seventh studio set, Lexicon, opens at No.2 on sales of 16,706 copies. He thus remains tied with Cheryl (two solo, two with Girls Aloud), One Direction and Olly Murs as the reality TV graduates with most No.1 albums. Lexicon is No.1 on both physical sales (11,752) and paid-for downloads (4,274), being No.1 let down only by streaming. Recording Young’s lowest first week sale for a studio album yet, it is the successor to 85% Proof, which previously held that record with 21,320, but which Lewis Capaldi - Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent (Virgin EMI) nevertheless opened at No.1 in 2015, and has sold 96,356 copies. -

The Crisis of Identity in Rumi's “Tale of the Reed”
The Crisis of Identity in Rumi’s “Tale of the Reed”1 Firoozeh Papan-Matin Hear the voice of the Bard! Who Present, Past, & Future, sees; Whose ears have heard The Holy Word That walk’d among the ancient trees William Blake2 Jalal al-Din Rumi was born in Balkh in 1207 and died in Konya in 1273. A celebrated mystic and poet, he scarcely needs an introduction.3 His exceptional achievements in mysticism and poetry, along with his intriguing relationship with Shams al-Din of Tabriz (d.1247), have kept him in the foreground of literary and mystical discussions all over the world.4 Rumi’s intimate relationship with Shams—a mysterious dervish whom he met in Konya in 1244—had a formative influence on his life and his poetry.5 Rumi considered Shams to be the perfect image of the beloved and the supreme companion he had been seeking in his spiritual life. After the disappearance of Shams from his life, Rumi maintained intense relationships with two other companions, Salah al-Din Faridun Zarkub (d. 1258) and Husam al-Din Chelebi (d. 1284-85); Rumi assigned both of these men, respectiively, to instruct his disciples. These friendships are important in understanding Rumi’s work.6 Rumi saw in these men a spiritual mirror for his own complex mystical experiences. This article will evaluate an instance of such complexities in a reading of “The Tale of the Reed” (Nay Namih).7 “The Tale of the Reed”—the well known opening thirty-five lines of the great Persian mystic magnum opus, the Masnavi—is the account of the separation of the lover, personified as the reed, from the Fatherland, the reed-bed, where it had belonged in the presence of God, the beloved. -
