To create it, she called on an impressive group of collaborators that include artists such as Cuban-born Miami-based singer and songwriter Elsten Torres; Canadian singer Kellylee Evans; Malagasy guitarist and singer Donné Roberts; Sudanese multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulahamid; and Cuban singer, songwriter and guitarist Pablosky Rosales. Originally released in 1972 on URC (Underground Record Club), one of Japan’s first independent record labels, the Haruomi Hosono-produced album remains one of the most beloved works to come out of Japan’s folk and rock scenes centered around Tokyo and Kansai areas in the early 1970s. Born and raised in Osaka in a large, music-loving family, Kanenobu picked up the guitar as a teen just as the “college folk” boom swept through university campuses in the Kansai area in the mid-60s. The Pete Seeger and American folk-leaning scene didn’t appeal much to her, however, and instead gravitated towards the British sounds of Donovan and Pentangle, teaching herself guitar techniques by listening to their music. Kanenobu made her songwriting and recording debut as part of Himitsu Kessha Marumaru Kyodan, whose sole single was released on URC in 1969. After years of being pushed aside by the label in favor of newer male artists who were more “folky” in a traditional sense, it was her friendship with the groundbreaking band and labelmate Happy End that ultimately helped her secure the opportunity to record a solo album. With Hosono on board as producer, Kanenobu spent seven days recording the songs that would become Misora, with most songs recorded in a single take. By the time Misora released in September 1972, Kanenobu was gone. She had left for America, eager to start a new life with Paul Williams, a music writer who had founded Crawdaddy Magazine in 1966. Without the artist to promote it, “Misora was asleep for a long time,” she said. Meanwhile Kanenobu settled near Sonoma in Northern California, retiring from music and concentrating on raising her two children. It wasn’t until Philip K. Dick, the famed writer and family friend, heard Misora and encouraged her to get back into music, that Kanenobu felt the urge to pick up the guitar again. Soon new songs started flowing, and Dick helped finance a single for Kanenobu in 1981. He was committed to producing a full length when he died unexpectedly in 1982. While she enjoyed success (especially in Germany) with her hard-hitting group Culture Shock in the 1980s, and continued to release albums in American and in Japan in the 1990s, it’s Misora that keeps coming back to her. Every few years a new generation of fans discover the album. Devendra Banhart, Jim O’Rourke, Steve Gunn, and many others continue to tout its greatness. Kanenobu played a series of sold-out homecoming shows in Japan in 2018, playing Misora in its entirety. Surviving members of Happy End came out to support, some even playing in her backing band. Audience members included old and young, some young enough to be her grandchildren. “I love it,” she said. “They love Misora, they’ve heard it so many times. And here it rose from death…because for them, they can’t believe it—she’s still alive!” STREET DATE: JUNE 21, 2019

He has made audiences scream, laugh, cry, and even actually stab him with knives (multiple times)! Even if you are not a wrestling fan, you’ll recognize the Funker from his roles in Road House, Over the Top, and more. He was world heavyweight champion in 1975, but in the 90’s he started to get extra crazy, competing in Japanese death matches involving explosives and doing back flips outside of the ring in his fifties. Despite being one of the most vicious, scariest wrestlers of all time, .Mr Funk is actually one of the sweetest men the sport has ever seen. He is universally revered and respected all over the world.

For years, we dreamed of releasing a vinyl record of Terry Funk telling stories and it has finally happened! Recorded in his home office in Amarillo, Texas, Tougher Than Shoe Leather is 40 minutes of national treasure Terry Funk speaking about his entire incredible life - growing up in Amarillo, winning the world heavyweight championship, becoming a true Japanese hero, retiring and returning dozens of times - all while having the endless support of a loving family.

REAL SHOOBEEDOO LP Reminiscing Release Date: 28-Jun-19 [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] LP / TWM29 / 742338383690 / $29.31

* Rare cosmic Jazz album by Tribe & Sun Ra collaborator Reggie Fields * First vinyl reissue since 1981 * Deluxe 180g vinyl edition (available on both black and clear vinyl) * Black Vinyl Edition Limited to 500 copies, comes with obi strip

The Real ShooBeeDoo (AKA Reggie Fields) has always been a consistent name on the Detroit jazz scene … Fields who played with Pharoah Sanders while he was living in Motor City, worked with Sun Ra in the late 1970s and early 80s and who was also a close associate of the Afro-centric TRIBE label and artist collective, leaving his marks on a few essential TRIBE sessions such as Phil Ranelin’s “The Time Is Now!” as well as Ranelin & Wendell Harrison’s masterpiece “A Message From The Tribe”.

It was Wendell Harrison who gave Fields the chance to record a solo album as a leader on his own WENHA imprint where “Reminiscing” found release in 1981. Reggie chose to record under his moniker “The Real ShooBeeDoo” because he built a rock-solid reputation as an internationally acclaimed performer under that name. This can later be heard on his fantastic ‘‘Live at Montreux Jazz Festival, 1982” album.

“Reminiscing” is a deep and rewarding spiritual jazz album with bass lines that can blow through walls as if they were made from paper. Foot stomping rhythmic beats and lyrics that are pure poetry, far-out (and less obvious) vocal duties … this all takes the avant-garde approach featured here on his album to new ‘cosmic’ heights. ‘Originality’, ‘unique’ and ‘standing out’ are the main key-words here.

Also…a quick closer look at the cast of players is most likely to be enough to get an impression that this is a special record. The album features an all-star line-up that includes Billy McCoy (Pharoah Sanders) on piano, Tani Tabbal (Roscoe Mitchell, Sun Ra) on percussion, Allan Barnes (Nina Simone, , Gill Scott-Heron) on saxophone, and Wendell Harrison (Tribe) himself on tenor saxophone/vocals. THE SEA AND CAKE LP Oui (Yellow / White Vinyl) Release Date: 20-Oct-17 [Thrill Jockey] LP / THRILL086LP / 790377008616 / $17.50

* The Sea and Cake’s fifth album Oui is back in stock on color vinyl (yellow with white!) and packaged in a high gloss jacket with a free download card.

Oui marks the triumphant return of The Sea and Cake after a three-year absence which saw the members of the band pursue a variety of interests; musical, professional and personal. The line up of the band remains Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, Eric Claridge and John McEntire. The Sea and Cake formed in 1994 out of the ashes of Shrimp Boat (Sam and Eric), and The Cocktails (Archer). John was a friend of the three and had just begun playing with Mosquito, which would later rename itself Tortoise. In fall of that year the band released their self- titled debut record and followed it with three more for a total of four in four years, each gaining in popularity and critical acclaim. In 1997 after months of touring in support of their most successful record The Fawn, the band decided to take some time off to focus their energy in other places. Eric went to work on his paintings with a series of shows in Chicago and a bi- monthly insert in the Chicago Reader. Archer recorded his second solo record, toured and continued to concentrate on his Sof’ Boy merchandise and comics (published by Fantagraphics). John played with Tortoise, built a studio (SOMA) and engineered the Stereolab record among many others. Sam painted for his debut solo show in Chicago and a July 2000 show at Clementine in Chelsea, released his debut solo record and toured extensively. When things began to quiet down in late 1999, the four began setting aside the time to record what would become their finest record yet, Oui. “Surprisingly the long lay off didn’t seem to pose any ill effects, somehow the distant perspective supplied a new necessary focus”, says Prekop. There were no impediments as far as reconvening and songwriting were concerned. Sam added that “I think (the fact that) Archer and I continued to work together during The Sea and Cake’s down time was crucial. So when we started writing it wasn’t like we were starting over, we were just working in a new context.” AVIS DE CHANGEMENTS - CHANGES UPDATES
