After a pair of winning seasons and its first Pac-12 Tournament win since 2014, Utah Men’s Joe Woolley was another Ute who was able to capture 15 singles victories last season, his Tennis looks to take the next step. Roeland Brateanu, the reigning ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year, is in his fourth season as the head coach at Utah and has returned the program to its winning ways, earning a 17-10 record in each of the past two seasons and a sixth- place finish in the Pac-12 Conference. The 34-20 record is the best two-season record for the program since the early ‘80s. In many ways the success Roeland Brateanu of the program over the last three years can be measured in the barrage of individual and team accolades earned. Under Brateanu’s tutelage the “U” has won 5 ITA Regional Awards and added 4 student-athletes to various Pac-12 All-Conference Head Coach Teams. Academically, the team set a record with a 3.54 GPA last season and have had 14 ITA Scholar Athletes over the past three seasons. Fourth Season

Brateanu currently represents all head coaches on the Utah High Performance Team and is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Mountain Regional Committee.

Prior to joining the Utah staff in 2008, Brateanu was on the coaching staff of the Guatemalan Fed Cup Team. The team attained its best result with a fifth-place finish in the America’s Zone Group II. While in Guatemala, he also coached two junior talents, leading them to a No. 1 ranking in their respective age groups. Additionally, Brateanu is a Bigger Faster Stronger certified strength and conditioning coach and clinician.

As a player at Utah, Bratenau was named first-team All-MWC twice in doubles (2003-04) and once in singles (2003). He was the regional winner of the prestigious Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award in 2004, when he was named Utah’s MVP. Brateanu also earned numerous academic awards as a player, including academic all-conference honors and a spot on the Athletic Director’s honor roll.

He was the team captain his senior year and served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Daniel Pollock was hired as assistant coach in June 2014 after serving in the same role at Graeme Cox, a former player at Utah, returned to the men’s tennis coaching staff as a BYU. volunteer assistant. Prior to Utah: Born and raised in Moscow, ‘Slava’ was a runner up at the Rus- sian National Junior Championships in singles play and the national champion in doubles. He also won the doubles championship at the ITF G2 Ozerov Cup in his home country this summer.

Shainyan has been placed among the top four in the junior national rankings and rated as high as No. 482 in the ITF World Junior Rankings. In 2015, he was a member of Team Moscow and won the Sports Festival, clinching the championship for his team.

After his success in Russia, Shainyan trained and played in the United States at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, California. During his time in the U.S., he ranked as high as No. 48 in the nation and defeated former Ute and current UNLV No. 1 singles player Ace Matias.

No. 1 in singles has been ranked as high as No. 104 in the nation in singles and No. 69 in and doubles for the USTA Northern California Section ... a career high UTR of doubles. 12.60 ... ranked as high as No. 72 in the nation in the U18 category for singles play ... captained Team Northern California to an historic upset victory over Team Under the instruction of Lindsay and Francis Rawstorne, Stoner achieved Southern California in the 44th Annual Maze Cup impressive rankings during his time in junior tennis. He reached a four-star recruit ranking and was No. 1 in the state of Utah and Intermountain region for singles and doubles. He also secured two state championships while playing for Brighton High School.

Personal: Chase was raised by his parents Rob and Shanda Stoner, and he has a brother and a sister. He hopes to pursue a career in entrepreneurship and/ or marketing at the University of Utah.

24 Conference Championships NCAA Champion Greg Holmes Utah has claimed 24 conference championships in its rich tennis history. The Utes won Greg Holmes became Utah’s first NCAA champion in 1983. As the No. 1 seed, he their first conference championship in 1928 as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic captured the NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Ga. en route to earning All- Conference under head coach Theron Parmelee. America honors. Holmes lost only one set during his six-match championship run.

Utah went on to rack up nine more conference championships under Parmelee, playing in Holmes was the last player to ever win an NCAA title using a wooden racquet. the RMAC and later in the Skyline Conference. His Kramer Autograph racquet is still displayed in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame along with those of every other NCAA champion. Utah then joined the Western Athletic Conference in 1963 and under the leadership of head coach Harry James, won two WAC crowns in its first three years of affiliation: 1963 Holmes’ Title Track and ‘65. The Utes’ next WAC championship came in 1977 and sparked more than a decade Rd. of 64: def. Tarek El Sakka (SW Louisiana), 7-6 (4), 6-2 of conference dominance as the Utes collected 11 conference titles between 1977 and Rd. of 32: def. Utah’s 2008 Mountain West Conference championship marked its first title as a member of the MWC. The Utes went 5-1 in league play and clinched the conference title with a 4-3 victory against arch rival BYU.

It was Utah’s 24th league title overall and the Utes’ fourth under Robbins.

Utah’s All-Americans Utes In The ITA Hall of Fame Utah men’s tennis has had eight different players, including current head coach F.D. The ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame is located at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Robbins, earn 12 ITA All-American awards. Utah’s first All-American was Jim Osbourne, Athens, Ga., and is home to the most extensive collection of college tennis history a two-time selection in 1965 and ‘66. The last Ute to reach All-America status was and memorabilia in the nation. Utah has had three members of its tennis program Christian Svensson, selected in 1997. inducted into the Hall of Fame. All-American Utes Year Jim Osbourne 1965, 1966 Harry James, Utah’s head coach from 1961-1986 and a winner of 10 conference F.D. Robbins 1969, 1970 championships, was enshrined with the class of 1987. During his tenure, the Utes won Dan Bleckinger 1969, 1970 10 WAC championships and had seven players earn a total of 11 All-America honors. Kent Crawford 1976, 1977 Jeff Robbins 1981 Jim Osbourne, enshrined with the class of 2005, who is recognized for his Greg Holmes 1983 achievements both as a player at Utah and a coach at BYU. Osbourne was an All- Christian Schultes 1986 American under James in 1965 and 1966. Christian Svensson 1997 Utah’s third inductee, Greg Holmes, is a Utah tennis All-American and 1983 NCAA singles champion as a No. 1 seed under James and then assistant coach F.D. Robbins. Left: Current head coach F.D. Robbins became the second Ute ever to earn All-America accolades in 1969. He then earned his second straight honor in 1970.

Ben Tasevac Dmytro Mamedov Timmy Allin Sportsmanship Award 2013, 14 2012, ‘13 2007, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10 The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August, the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day inside Ashe Stadium during the U.S. Open. This award which dates back to 1984, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men’s and women’s players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Utah has had three players honored with this award: Current volunteer assistant coach Graeme Cox (1992), Brandon Owen (1997) and current head coach Roeland Brateanu (2004).
