IT'S A PRIVILEGE TO JOIN YOU

THIS EVENING IN SALUTING JACK

DANFORTH.

THOSE OF YOU HERE MAY NOT

REALIZE IT, BUT YOU ARE REALLY

WITNESSING HISTORY TONIGHT. I

CAN'T REMEMBER A TIME WHEN

THIS MANY SENATORS ATTENDED

A DINNER, AND ONLY TWO OF

THEM ARE SPEAKING.

1

Page 1 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

ONE SENATOR WHO COULDN'T

MAKE IT DOWN THIS EVENING IS

STROM THURMOND. SINCE STROM

HOLDS THE RECORD FOR SPEAKING

ON THE SENATE FLOOR FOR 22

HOURS STRAIGHT, HE'S RARELY

INVITED TO SPEAK AT BANQUETS.

HOWEVER, STROM DID ASK ME

TO PASS ALONG TWO THOUGHTS.

FIRST, HE WANTS TO BE INVITED

2

Page 2 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

TO THE ST. LOUIS RAMS TRAINING

CAMP.

AND SECOND, HE STILL CAN'T

IMAGINE WHY SOMEONE AS YOUNG

AS JACK WOULD WANT TO RETIRE

FROM THE SENATE. AND HE SAID

THAT IF JACK CHANGES HIS MIND

IN COMES BACK IN TEN OR TWENTY

YEARS, HE'LL BE THERE TO GREET

HIM.

3

Page 3 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

THERE ARE QUITE A FEW

SENATORS AND CONGRESSMEN

HERE TONIGHT--REPUBLICANS AND

DEMOCRATS ALIKE.

AND IF YOU BROUGHT UP AN

ISSUE OR TWO, WE'D PROBABLY

HAVE SOME DISAGREEMENTS.

BUT THERE IS ONE AREA WHERE I

GUARANTEE YOU WE ALL AGREE.

AND THAT'S THE ADMIRATION AND

4

Page 4 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

RESPECT WE HAVE FOR JACK

DANFORTH.

YOU KNOW HOW I HATE TO

TAKE ISSUE WITH DEMOCRATS--

ESPECIALLY ONE WHO IS A

MISSOURI LEGEND LIKE HARRY

TRUMAN.

BUT I CAN SAY WITHOUT A

DOUBT THAT PRESIDENT TRUMAN

WAS WRONG WHEN HE SAID THAT

5

Page 5 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

"IF YOU WANT A FRIEND IN

WASHINGTON, B ~A DOG."

AND I SAY THAT BECAUSE l'M

JUST ONE OF MANY IN

WASHINGTON WHO KNEW FOR 18

YEARS THAT IF WE NEEDED A

FRIEND, ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS

CALL JACK DANFORTH.

IF YOU WERE TO ASK ANY

SENATOR WHO THEY WOULD TURN

TO IN A TIME OF CRISIS ... WHO

6

Page 6 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

THEY WOULD WANT TO PROVIDE

COUNSEL AND FRIENDSHIP WHEN

THE CHIPS WERE DOWN, THE

OVERWHELMING ANSWER WOULD

BE JACK DANFORTH.

BUT BEFORE I GET INTO

TROUBLE, LET ME ADD THAT HARRY

TRUMAN WAS RIGHT MORE OFTEN

THAN HE WAS WRONG. AND HE

WAS RIGHT WHEN HE SAID THE

FOLLOWING:

7

Page 7 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

"DEMOCRACY IS A MATTER OF

FAITH--A FAITH IN THE SOUL OF

MAN--A FAITH IN HUMAN RIGHTS.

THAT IS THE KIND OF FAITH THAT

MOVES MOUNTAINS."

AND IF THERE'S ONE WORD

THAT CAN BE USED TO DESCRIBE

JACK DANFORTH'S LIFE AND

CAREER IT'S THE WORD "FAITH. II

JACK ALWAYS HAD FAITH THAT

AMERICA AND HER PEOPLE WOULD

8

Page 8 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

BE THERE FOR THOSE IN NEED.

AND WITH INTEGRITY AND

INTELLIGENCE, HE ALWAYS KEPT

FAITH WITH THOSE HE SERVED.

AS QUITE A FEW FOLKS

DISCOVERED IN THIS LAST

ELECTION, SOME POLITICIANS

LEAVE OFFICE BECAUSE THE

VOTERS TELL THEM TO LEAVE.

OTHERS LEAVE BEFORE THE

VOTERS CAN TELL THEM.

9

Page 9 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

BUT FOR JACK, THAT WASN'T

THE CASE. THERE WAS NOT A

DOUBT IN ANY SENATOR'S MIND--

REPUBLICAN OR DEMOCRAT--THAT

JACK WOULD HAVE BEEN RE-

ELECTED. IN HIS LAST RACE,

SENATOR DANFORTH WON 68% OF

THE VOTE, WINNING ALL 114

MISSOURI COUNTIES. l'VE RUN

UNOPPOSED BEFORE, AND NOT

DONE THAT WELL.

10

Page 10 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

SENATOR DANFORTH LEFT THE

SENATE BECAUSE HE HAD FAITH

THAT THERE WERE OTHER AVENUES

IN WHICH HE COULD MAKE A

DIFFERENCE.

AND WITH INTERFAITH ACTION

FOR CHILDREN TODAY HE HAS

DONE JUST THAT.

THE GREAT LARRY BIRD ONCE

SAID "I HATE IT WHEN SOMEONE

11

Page 11 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

JUST STANDS BY AND WATCHES IT

GO OUT OF BOUNDS."

HE, OF COURSE, WAS TALKING

ABOUT A BASKETBALL. BUT THE

SAME HAS ALWAYS BEEN TRUE FOR

JACK DANFORTH WHEN IT COMES

TO AMERICA'S YOUTH.

JACK IS INCAPABLE OF

STANDING BY AND WATCHING OUR

YOUTH GO OUT OF BOUNDS.

12

Page 12 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

AND BECAUSE OF INTERACT, THE

LIVES OF THE DISADVANTAGED

YOUNG PEOPLE OF ST. LOUIS WILL

BE GREATLY IMPROVED.

THERE'S A FRIEND OF JACK'S

AND MINE WHO WOULD PROBABLY

CALL JACK A "POINT OF LIGHT."

THAT FRIEND, OF COURSE, IS

PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH.

PRESIDENT BUSH COULDN'T BE

HERE THIS EVENING, BUT HE DID

13

Page 13 of 41 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu

SEND A LONG A VIDEO GREETING,

WHICH IT IS MY PLEASURE TO

INTRODUCE.
