    Metacognition and Multimodal Literacy: Adolescents Constructing Meaning from Multimodal Texts by Margaret Ann Shane A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Secondary Education University of Alberta © Margaret Ann Shane, 2019 Abstract Conventional wisdom holds that adolescents are somehow naturally adroit at the selection, navigation, consumption, and creation of online texts; that they are more likely to be engaged by multimodal and online texts than by printed material. School boards and the teaching profession are heavily invested in rhetorical celebrations of such technology as a means to improve student achievement based on assumptions about how teens read multimodal, online texts. This study explores how young people aged 12-18 engage with online multimodal texts, both familiar texts of their own choosing and novel titles presented by the researcher. Specifically, this study aims to understand which metacognitive strategies study participants demonstrated during three successive online reading sessions. To this end, this study undertook to answer the following research questions. What is the level of metacognitive awareness exhibited by youth while engaging with multimodal texts? Which traditional print reading practices are identifiable in participants’ reports of their metacognitive strategies? Which metacognitive skills are exhibited by young people while exploring “the semiotic landscape” (Kress & Van Leeuwen, 2005, p. 16)? The research questions aim to shed light on how adolescents employ metacognitive awareness, knowledge, and control in their construction of subjective socially and culturally mediated meaning. Are adolescents effectively engaging with these texts? Are these texts helping or hindering student learning? A secondary interest pertains to the pedagogical environment in which students engage with online multimodal texts.

Hundreds of toddler-oriented channels on YouTube feature inoffensive, well produced, and educational videos. Unfortunately, inappropriate content that targets this demographic is also common. In this work, we build a classifier able to discern inappropriate content that targets toddlers on YouTube with Frozen, Mickey Mouse, etc., combined with disturbing con- 84.3% accuracy, and leverage it to perform a large-scale, tent containing, for example, mild violence and sexual con- quantitative characterization that reveals some of the risks of notations. These disturbing videos usually include an inno- YouTube media consumption by young children. Our analy- cent thumbnail aiming at tricking the toddlers and their cus- sis reveals that YouTube is still plagued by such disturbing todians.

Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Welcome to the Nielsen Music Year-End Report, which examines the trends that shaped the Paul Shaver Canadian music industry in 2017 with definitive consumption figures and charts. Vice President/ Head of Nielsen Music Canada Overall consumption of albums, songs and On-Demand Audio streaming grew 13.6% year-over- year. On-Demand Audio streaming offset decreases in track and album sales and, on December 3, for the first time in history, it surpassed the 900 million per week mark. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week. My main objective was to determine the predominant audio-visual genres among the 10 most influential Spanish YouTubers in 2018. Using a quantitative extrapolation method, I extracted these data from SocialBlade, an independent website, whose main objective is to track YouTube statistics. Other secondary objectives in this research were to analyze: (1) Gender visualization, (2) the originality of these YouTube audio-visual genres with respect to others, and (3) to answer the question as to whether YouTube channels form a new audio-visual genre. I quantitatively analyzed these data to determine how these genres are influenced by the presence of polymediation as an integrated communicative environment working in relational terms with other media. My conclusion is that we can talk about a new audio-visual genre.
