Little Dixie, Missouri .....................................................................................................23 vi INTRODUCTION In the late nineteenth century, at the height of the memorialization movement in the United States, varying groups of women, northern, southern, white and black, used the memory of the Civil War to achieve their specific social, economic, and political goals. In Missouri, both southern sympathizing white women and African American participated in this movement. In 1898, Southern sympathizing white women of Missouri organized as the State Association of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Beginning in 1879, after the passage of the Arrears Act, Missouri’s African American women collected evidence, testimonies, and documents to file their claims for a Federal Pension for their men’s service in the Civil War. Although using differing methods, the actions of both groups of women indicate the ways in which the Civil War continued to shape their lives. Divided by slavery in the antebellum period and by the post war persistence of racial hierarchies, this close examination of the memorial work of forty Missouri women, twenty southern sympathizing women and twenty African American women, explores the ways in which their gendered experiences as mothers, wives and daughters arguably united them.1 1 Minutes of the Second Annual Meeting of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (Missouri: United Daughters of the Confederacy, Missouri Division, 1899), 4; Mary Francis Berry, My Face is Black is True: Callie House and the Struggle for Ex-Slave Reparations (New York: Alfred A. In 1861, southern sympathizing white men of Missouri enlisted to fight for the Confederate cause. Their women remained at home working as caregivers to their families, managers of their farms, and supporters of the war effort. Two years later, African American men volunteered to serve in the Union Army, leaving their women often still enslaved in the white household and responsible for their own families. The intimate organization of the southern slaveholding household dictated that these women experienced the war together despite their loyalties to opposing sides of the conflict. His example challenged me in my elder years to tell the story of a remarkable man who made a significant difference in my life. 3 Preface How All This Began I moved from Detroit to Kansas City with my wife and four children in the summer of 1960 to assume my first tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of American Literature at Kansas City University. The civil rights movement was gathering steam and I had made a couple of financial contributions to the Congress of Racial Equality while still in Detroit. CORE then asked if I were interested in becoming more socially active. I said yes, but I was moving to Kansas City. It took them months to catch up with me again in Kansas City and repeat their question. I again said yes. A few weeks later a field representative was sent to Kansas City to organize those who had showed interest. He called the first meeting in our home. Most who attended were white except for Leon and Orchid Jordan and Larry and Opal Blankinship. Most of us did not know each other, except the Jordans and the Blankinships were well acquainted. The rep insisted we organize and elect officers.

PREFACE Compiling this history has been quite an adventure. I began with a single sheet of paper – a mimeographed copy of a typewritten copy of the obituary of Benjamin H. Reeves. The paper was yellowed and the print was slanted down-hill from left to right and of poor quality. I do not know the origin of this paper. I only know it is something that I have “always had”. My next find, entirely by accident, was a plaque on a building in “Old Town” St. Charles, Mo. We had stopped to spend the night on a trip back from Pennsylvania in the summer of 1996. The dinner hour led us to explore the historic shop and restaurant district nearby. There on a shop front was a plaque that read; “Site of Eckert’s Tavern 1826 – 1846. In 1824 Congress authorized a trade road to Santa-Fe and appointed Geo. C. Sibley, Benj. Reeves and Thomas Mather to survey the route. Final reports of this survey were written here in the latter part of 1827.” Imagine my surprise! I then discovered the State Historical Society of Missouri and its “Western Historical Manuscript Collection”.

As a rebellious region, Union forces occupied the county for much of the war, so local secessionists either stayed silent or faced arrest. After a tense, nonviolent interaction between a Federal regiment and a group of armed citizens from Callaway, a story grew about a Kingdom of Callaway. The legend of the Kingdom of Callaway is merely one characteristic of the curious history that makes Callaway County during the Civil War an intriguing study. Kingdom of Callaway 3 Introduction When Missouri chose not to secede from the United States at the beginning of the American Civil War, Callaway County chose its own path. The local Callawegians seceded from the state of Missouri and fashioned themselves into an independent nation they called the Kingdom of Callaway. Or so goes the popular legend. This makes a fascinating story, but Callaway County never seceded and never tried to form a sovereign kingdom. Although it is not as fantastic as some stories, the Civil War experience of Callaway County is a remarkable microcosm in the story of a sharply divided border state.

    A battlefield museum in Missouri displays one scavenger’s many finds Source: Kansas City Star, adapted by Newsela staff Kansas City, MO— It started six decades ago. As construction crews began developing sections of a Kansas City meadow near the Blue River, a man concerned about the impact on history began showing up with a metal detector. Over an 11-year period beginning in 1952, John Adams Jr. dug up dozens of items. The objects he found had been left behind by Union and Confederate soldiers during the October 1864 Battle of Westport. Adams found belt buckles, revolvers, bayonets, unexploded artillery shells—even a carved bullet that may have been used as a chess piece. Often he arrived after big rains, in case rushing water had revealed something previously hidden. Whenever new construction commenced, he asked permission to look around. Today, many national battlefield preservationists frown mightily on such a artifact hunting. Local Civil War students, however, are thankful for the work of Adams, whose relatives had farmed the battlefield area before and after the war. Because of Adams, a collection of artifacts from Kansas City’s most significant Civil War battle survives today. “A Bunch of Rusted Things” Visitors to the Battle of Westport Visitors Center and Museum during the battle’s 150th anniversary commemoration, which began October 23, can see what Adams saved. About 75 artifacts that he retrieved from the area now known as the Byram’s Ford Big Blue Battlefield will be on exhibit. The collection, which museum organizers learned about only recently, represents a huge increase in the number of known Battle of Westport relics.

Box 11940 St. Louis, MO 63112-0040 314-746-4510 [email protected] BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dr. John Sappington was born May 15, 1776, in Maryland. He was the son of Mark Brown Sappington and Rebecca Boyle Sappington. John studied medicine under his father until 1800 when he moved to Franklin, Tennessee, to begin his own practice. In 1814-1815, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and received his M.D. He returned to Franklin but later moved to Missouri in 1817. Sappington settled first in Howard County before making his permanent home in Arrow Rock, Saline County, in 1819. Dr. Sappington is regarded as the first doctor to effectively use quinine for the treatment of malaria and fevers. He rejected the common practices of bloodletting and purges in favor of modern medical practices. In 1832, Sappington began to produce a malaria remedy named “Sappington’s fever pills.” He employed agents across the Midwest and South to sell the pills. By patenting his medicine and acting as manufacturer and wholesaler, Sappington alienated himself from many physicians of the period who looked upon his actions as unprofessional. The pills were extremely successful and sold by the millions. In 1844, Sappington wrote The Theory and Treatment of Fevers, a book written as a treatment guide for the general public. Dr. Sappington married Jane Breathitt in 1804. They had nine children. He died September 7, 1856, at his home, “Fox Castle,” in Arrow Rock.
