ABOUT POLISH ASSISTANCE

Polish Assistance provides financial support to needy persons of Polish origin who are facing unforeseen hardships. Beneficiaries receive assistance in meeting daily expenses, usually to supplement low social security payments or to cover extraordinary medical bills. Recipients also include the homeless, those in need of medical treatment, and handicapped people who are unable to care for themselves. Polish Assistance also continues its involvement in many Polish causes. To accomplish this, Polish Assistance solicits donations through dues and a series of fundraising activities, such as the Bal Polonaise. Our organization was founded in 1956 by Count and Countess Jan Dembinski, together with the support of their friends: Aniela Mlynarska Rubinstein, her husband. World renowned Polish pianist Maestro Artur Rubinstein and the cosmetics queen Helena Rubinstein. Initially, the activity of Polish Assistance consisted of small grants and loans to individuals in need. It proceeded to own and operate three homes in New Jersey for elderly Polish immigrants of limited means. Under the aegis of the presidency of Teresa Sulimirski and subsequently Jadwiga Palade, the focus of Polish Assistance changed from providing group homes for elderly Poles to direct assistance to individuals. Since its inception, Polish Assistance has eased the lives of many people. Eminent participants in former balls include Princess Grace of Monaco, Princess Stanislas Radziwill, Princess Lucie Shirazee, Count Adam Zamoyski; numerous ambassadors and statesmen, including Zbigniew Brzezinski; and famous actors like Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Basil Rathbone, and Joan Fontaine. More recent honorees include Operatic Diva Martha Eggerth Kiepura, Tenor Piotr Beczala, Count Wladyslaw Poninski, President of the Association of the Polish Knights of Malta. We have also honored such renowned authors as Jerzy Kosinski, “The Painted Bird” and “Being There”; Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud, “A Question of Honor”; and David Ensor, CNN Correspondent, “ Rising: The Forgotten Soldiers of World War II”.

ABOUT BAL POLONAISE

Tonight’s celebration is an occasion to socialize and to uphold the finest Polish traditions. We honor the United States of America and Poland by displaying their flags and singing both national anthems. The ball begins with a Grand Polonaise accompanied by the introduction of our special guests and the Board of Directors. The polonaise dance dates back to 1573, when Polish nobility passed in a ceremonial procession before their newly elected king to the sound of stately music. It was a proud moment in Polish history, as the dynastic form of government ended giving rise to an electoral system, ahead of its time and unique then in all of Europe. Poles have great history and traditions to be proud of. It is our duty to preserve them. We are famous for our hospitality, charity and generosity. We are proud of our history and the heroic battles for freedom, ours and that of other nations. Polish Assistance upholds these traditions. Polish Assistance evolved from a literary club called “Zielony Balonik” formed in 1953 by a group of Polish émigré poets, writers and artists. Their popular dances were called by the same name “Little Green Balloon.” Three years later, under the leadership of Count and Countess Jan Dembinski, this group formed Polish Assistance to aid the many displaced elderly Polish émigrés arriving in New York. They convinced many of their influential friends to establish the fledgling charity. Thus, thanks to the world renowned pianist, Maestro Artur Rubinstein and his wife Nela, the first dance for the benefit of Polish Assistance took place in the Park Avenue penthouse of Princess Gourielli, better known in the world of beauty as Helena Rubinstein. This was not exactly a modest beginning, and since then, this social event, now called the Bal Polonaise, has been held annually in the most prestigious ballrooms of New York. Today, for more than a half of century, the tradition continues. We congratulate and thank those who have been part of this wonderful tradition for so many years and invite you to join us. As we celebrate each other during these balls, we never forget that the mission is to provide financial help to the needy in our Polish American community.

Programme

THE GRAND POLONAISE The Bal Polonaise commences with the dancing of the Polonaise. This procession to music traditionally opened and closed special celebrations, whether they were coronations, honoring dignitaries or other royal and noble functions. The origin of the dance dates from 1573 when Henry, Duke of Anjou (later King Henry III of France), was elected to the throne of Poland. The ladies and gentlemen of Polish nobility passed in this ceremonial parade before him in Krakow to the sound of stately music.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to our 56th Bal Polonaise fundraiser. Warmest greetings to our dignitaries, loyal friends, long time attendees, as well as to our first time guests. Tonight, for the 56th time, we uphold the finest Polish traditions and honor Poland and the United States of America.

As we pay tribute to our honorees and celebrate each other, please remember those who Mrs. Jolana Blau are less fortunate and need our help. They depend on us and the success of this evening’s fundraiser. Thank you for your generosity. By supporting Polish Assistance and by attending Bal Polonaise, buying raffle tickets, bidding on the silent auction items, and of course, donating, you allow us to provide aid to the sick, needy and elderly people of Pol- ish descent, mostly in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Polish Assistance’s Board of Directors deserves special recognition for their dedication to the mission. There are many individuals as well as businesses that continuously respond for our calls for involvement. We appreciate them and a few are highlighted in this Souvenir Journal. Nina Mlodzinska de Rovira, a longtime supporter, Board of Directors Member and, who Mrs. Mariola Gorska chaired many balls in the past, is unable to attend for the first time in many years. Her Haggar presence will be missed but we’re looking forward to her return next year. At the same time, we’re proud to report that Chevalier Robert J. Campbell, MD K.C.S.J. is attending his 54th ball. We extend a special thank you to Jadwiga Palade, whose drive and determination is an inspiration to us all. She is also a recipient of the Amicus Poloniae Award which is presented by the Polish Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the United States. It is awarded to U.S. citizens who have made extraordinary accomplishments in the development of Polish-American relations, specifically in the popularization of Polish cul- ture, science, and in the general promotion of Poland in America. We congratulate her. Ms. Julia Posacki We thank Ewa Ziomecka-Junczyk for her many years of support of our organization, and we welcome Urszula Gacek, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in New York. Our co-workers, our friends and our families supported our every effort to make this a successful evening and it is with their encouragement that we carry on the mission of Pol- ish Assistance. Polish Assistance scope of services is fundamental to its success and key to supporting individuals who deserve the same opportunities as each of us. By joining us tonight for this very important fundraising event you are providing valuable resources to those in need. Mrs. Eva Skibicki Thank you for your generosity and enjoy this enchanting evening. Congratulations

Dr. Nina Thiessen

Dr. Nina Thiessen receiving the Cross of Polish Independence from Polish President Bronisław Komorowski, August 2014, for her service in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising

With much love, Marc, Pam, Max, Jack, Eva and Lucy WHITE EAGLE AWARD RECIPIENT Nina Januszowska Thiessen, M.D. Vice President Board of Directors Member Polish Assistance

Dr. Thiessen has held a leadership position in Polish Assistance for many years, eventually becoming a Board member. She has the arduous task of also being a member of the Grant Committee and is always challenging us to increase our fundraising efforts so that more assistance can be granted. Today we honor her many years of supporting those in our Polish community that need our help and cannot help themselves. She does it through her dedication to Polish Assistance, as well as in her professional life. Dr. Thiessen was born in Warsaw and participated in the Warsaw Uprising. After the war, she studied medicine in Ireland. Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski on July 30th, 2014 awarded state distinctions to over 40 Warsaw insurgents and historical activists on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising against Nazi German occupiers during World War Two. Dr. Thiessen was awarded the order of the Cross of Polish Independence (Krzyz Orderu Krzyza Niepodleglosci), one of the highest Polish Military decorations which is awarded to individuals who had "fought heroically for the independence of Poland." She was accompanied by her son, Marc, and grandson, Max. Marc writes, " At an age when most kids are going to school and playing dodge ball, she (my mother) was dodging German sniper fire, running orders across the city as a courier for the Polish Home Army. Today, seven decades on, she and her fellow veterans move more slowly, but at celebrations across this city last August they have been lovingly embraced by the people of a free Poland.... When the Poles finally surrendered, Hitler ordered Warsaw razed to the ground. As my mother was marched out of Warsaw to be deported to a POW camp in Germany, she looked back and saw the orange glow of her beloved city on fire. By the time it was over, 85 percent of the city was destroyed. Some 200,000 civilians and 16,000 members of the Home Army had been killed by the Germans." Dr. Thiessen came to the US with a degree in medicine and specialization in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology. In New York, she became a trained addiction specialist. She was a director of alcohol treatment services in Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn where she took care of over 100 patients of Polish origin who did not speak English. She continues her work in the Division of Addiction Medicine in Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital. We are very appreciative for her service to Polish Assistance and are honored to bestow the White Eagle Award to her.

Wishing you great success!

Much heartfelt and exuberant congratulations to Polish Assistance on their 56th Bal Polonaise on January 30, 2015.

Mrs. Jadwiga Palade and Polish Assistance are an inspiration for their generosity of spirit and devotion to Polish-Americans in providing financial relief and help in daily living to the needy, elderly and infirm. I am honored to be part of this wonderful organization. Lady Blanka Rosenstiel

AMICUS POLONIAE AWARD Friend of Poland Award Jadwiga Krajewska Palade President Polish Assistance

Amicus Poloniae is being bestowed upon Mrs. Jadwiga Palade, President of Polish Assistance, by His Excellency Ryszard Schnepf, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, for her years of dedicated service and outstanding achievements in the support of the Polish community as well as the promotion of Polish culture. Mrs. Jadwiga Palade has been actively involved in Polish Assistance working tirelessly not only on running this charitable organization but, most importantly, on fundraising in order to meet the ever increasing need for financial aid for those who fall on hard times in our Polish American community. Mrs. Jadwiga Palade, a member since 1972, has served as a Director, Vice President and from 2006 as President. She was born and educated in Poland. She is a widow of an Auschwitz (Oswiecim) 5 year survivor, who was eventually transferred to Germany and freed by the American Army. She graduated from the AGH University of Science and Technology (AGH- Akademia Gorniczo-Hutnicza) in Krakow and in 1963 she immigrated to the United States. When she remarried an executive of one of the top American corporations, they travelled throughout the world. In 1969 they relocated to London where Jadwiga became a member of the American Women Club and the prestigious Liceum Club of London, where at that time she was the only American member and also the only American of Polish descent. She also was involved in Polish organizations that supported Polish causes abroad during Communism. In 1972 she returned to New York City to establish her own export management company, located in the One World Trade Center. Her company represented Chrysler and General Motors among others. Using this experience as a successful businesswoman, Mrs. Palade is concentrating on running Polish Assistance as efficiently as possible, and on fundraising to allow the organization to increase assistance to needy individuals. She is the recipient of Polish Assistance's White Eagle Award. Her talents first became evident in the 1990’s as she managed Polish Assistance’s three retirement homes in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. However, most notable is Mrs. Palade's ability to organize fundraisers and persuade those in the Polish community to get involved and give back to those who are less fortunate. Leading by example, Mrs. Palade has encouraged her family and others to stay active and support the Polish community. Both her daughter and grandson are now involved in Polish Assistance. She has been active for many years and is a member of many Polish organizations including Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences in America. In June 2014, she attended the Fifth World Congress on Polish Studies in Warsaw.

She was married to Dr. Mircea Palade for 21 years until his passing in 2010. Currently, she divides her time between homes in Florida, Poland, and the Bahamas and is currently working on expanding Polish Assistance’s activities in Florida where she belongs to the Polish American Engineers Club and also supports other Polish organizations.

Ms. Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, departing Consul General of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York Chevalier Robert J. Campbell MD, K.C.S.J. Chevalier Cesare L. Santeramo, K.C.S.J. PREMIER SPONSOR Today you are making a difference in their lives

We highlight a few of our cases.... “We need one another” It was the theme of a special holiday celebration for the homeless and poor in the Polish neighborhood of Greenpoint in Brooklyn. "Homeless SOS" volunteers, including Eryka Volker, coordinated the event and Polish Assistance was one of the sponsors. Desperate mother’s plea I am 76 years old, riddled with diabetes, high cholesterol and joint pain. I cannot work and I rely on a small social security income. My son has had sepsis and has been bedridden in a public hospital since 2011. Every day I commute from Brooklyn to Harlem to see him. I can’t live on what I get from social security and I can’t even afford the subway ticket. A few weeks ago, I cashed my social security check and they robbed my apartment. I don't have enough money to take public transportation to see my son in the hospital. I am desperate. I am a widow with 5 young children My husband died of cancer while I was pregnant with our fifth child. Today, the youngest is 3 years old and the oldest is 12. We have no family here to help out. We live frugally but I need help. If God trusts me with five children, then I can raise them alone. I am at the mercy of federal assistance and goodwill of people. The Polish community rallied by holding a fundraiser. Polish Assistance provides monthly support. I am in a wheelchair and my family needs help I was diagnosed with a brain tumor 3 years ago and have undergone 3 surgeries leaving me in a wheelchair and unable to work. I require rehabilitation and I have problems with hearing and vision. I have 3 children. My two daughters are 4 and 7 years old. My 4 year old son has been diagnosed with autism. He requires constant supervision and a strict daily routine. My wife has to take care of all of us. We receive SSI and food stamps but it is simply not enough to live on. Polish Assistance helps us so that we can pay our bills. I am old and sick Polish Assistance has been helping me since 2003. I am 81 year old widow and I have been diagnosed with angina, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis degenerative disc disease. I have no family. I am confined to a wheelchair. I rely on the goodwill of my church and of Polish Assistance. We just need a bit We are patients at Coler-Goldwater Specialty Hospital, a long term acute care hospital, the New York City’s safety-net provider of healthcare services. We have no income and no families. Most likely we will never leave here. Help from Polish Assistance lets us keep our dignity. Thank you. We know you care.

Over the years, so many have supported and continue to this day to support Polish Assistance. They deserve recognition and our special gratitude. The Board of Directors and the Grant Committee consider each case. Dr. Nina Thiessen for many years has been reviewing the applications; many of them have pages and pages of medical records attached. Eryka Volker is a well-known activist in the Polish community and has been involved in charity work for over 25 years. She has great insight into the needs of those who are less fortunate. Her work on behalf of the needy has been profiled in many newspaper articles as well as on local TV.
