  • Hansel and Gretel” to America: a Study and Translation of a Puppet Show
BRINGING POCCI'S “HANSEL AND GRETEL” TO AMERICA: A STUDY AND TRANSLATION OF A PUPPET SHOW Daniel Kline A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2008 Committee: Dr. Christina Guenther, Advisor Bradford Clark, Advisor Dr. Kristie Foell Margaret McCubbin ii ABSTRACT Dr. Christina Guenther, Co-Advisor; Bradford Clark, Co-Advisor My thesis introduces the German-puppet character Kasperl to English-language scholars. I provide historical background on the evolution of the Kasperl figure and explore its political uses, its role in children’s theatre, and the use of puppet theatre as an alternative means of performance. The section on the political uses of the figure focuses mainly on propaganda during the First and Second World Wars, but also touches on other developments during the Weimar Republic and in the post-war era. The television program Kasperl and the use of Kasperl for education and indoctrination are two major features in the section concerning children’s theatre. In the second section of the thesis, my study focuses on the German puppet theatre dramatist Franz von Pocci (1807-1876) and his works. I examine Pocci’s theatrical texts, positing him as an author who wrote not only for children’s theatre. Within this section, I interpret several of his texts and highlight the way in which he challenges the artistic and scientific communities of his time. Finally, I analyze and translate his puppet play Hänsel und Gretel: Oder der Menschenfresser. In the analysis I explore issues concerning science, family, government agencies, and morality.

  • The Civilization of War Edited by Alessandro Dal Lago and Salvatore Palidda Conflict, Security and the Reshaping of Society the Civilization of War
Conflict, Security and the Reshaping of Society This book is an examination of the effect of contemporary wars (such as the ‘War on Terror’) on civil life at a global level. Contemporary literature on war is mainly devoted to recent changes in the theory and practice of warfare, particularly those in which terrorists or insurgents are involved (for example, the ‘revolution in military affairs’, ‘small wars’, and so on). On the other hand, today’s research on security is focused, among other themes, on the effects of the war on terrorism, and on civil liberties and social control. This volume connects these two fields of research, showing how ‘war’ and ‘security’ tend to exchange targets and forms of action as well as personnel (for instance, the spreading use of private contractors in wars and of military experts in the ‘struggle for security’) in modern society. This shows how, contrary to Clausewitz’s belief that war should be conceived of as a ‘continuation of politics by other means’, the opposite statement is also true: that politics, insofar as it concerns security, can be defined as the ‘continuation of war by other means’. This book will be of much interest to students of critical security studies, war and conflict studies, terrorism studies, sociology and international relations in general. Alessandro Dal Lago is Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communica- tion at the University of Genoa. Salvatore Palidda is Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Genoa. Routledge studies in liberty and security Series editors: Didier Bigo, Elspeth Guild and R.B.J.

  • Using System Dynamics in Warehouse Management: a Fast- Fashion Case
Using System Dynamics in warehouse management: a fast‐ fashion case study Anna Corinna Cagliano (corresponding author) a Alberto De Marco a Carlo Rafele a Sergio Volpe b a Politecnico di Torino School of Industrial Engineering and Management Dept. of Production Systems and Business Economics corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24, Torino 10129, Italy b Miroglio Fashion S.r.l. Logistics Direction viale G. Nogaris 20, Bra (CN) 12060, Italy Abstract Purpose – To present an analysis of how different sourcing policies and resource usage affect the operational performance dynamics of warehouse processes. Design/methodology/approach – The System Dynamics methodology is used to model warehouse operations at the distribution centre of a leading fast-fashion vertical retailer. This case study includes a detailed analysis of the relationships between the flow of items through the warehouse, the assignment of staff, the inventory management policy, and the order processing tasks. Findings – Case scenario simulations are provided to define warehouse policies enabling increased efficiency, cost savings, reduced inventory, and shorter lead-times. 1 Practical implications – The case study reaffirms that a flexible usage of human resources, outsourcing of selected warehouse operations, and sourcing from reliable manufacturers may result in important performance improvements for centralised warehousing. Originality/value – It is proved that System Dynamics is a valuable tool in the field of operations management not only to support strategic evaluations but also to execute a detailed analysis of logistical processes and make scenario-based dynamic decisions at the operational level.
