His father, J. B. Yeats, had abandoned law to take up painting, at which he made a somewhat precar- ious living. Activities by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in support of Yeats 2015 Introduction 2015 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of WB Yeats, the Nobel Prize-winning poet. A Yeats 2015 steering committee oversaw the presentation of an impressive programme of events to celebrate Yeats’ life and legacy. While most events took place in Ireland, a great number of events also took place overseas and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was very pleased to provide its support to the delivery of an engaging programme in a diverse range of locations. The Department, through the Embassy network, worked closely with the Yeats 2015 steering committee and with overseas partners, to organise or support over 100 international events and activities that celebrated the range and depth of Yeats’ work and brought Yeats’ legacy to the attention of audiences new and old across the globe. Among the events that took place were recitals and musical performances, exhibitions, lectures, international academic conferences and symposia, the publication of new translations of Yeats’ poetry, and prominent poetry displays on the London and Shanghai underground transport networks, in each case lasting for a period of many weeks. The Department’s travelling exhibition “The Life and Works of WB Yeats”, based on an exhibition curated by the National Library of Ireland, also proved particularly popular throughout 2015, as the 11 separate language versions were exhibited in five continents throughout the year. The programme culminated in December’s worldwide recitation of ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’, in which Minister Flanagan also participated. The programme of events attracted extensive coverage in overseas media over the course of the year, reinforced through interviews with visiting Irish Ministers and local Ambassadors. -

Daphne was the first object of PhoebusÕ love; according to the story, he did not love her just by chance, but through the anger and the vengeance of the god of love, who hated him. For Cupid once was enjoying himself like a child full of delight, and was putting all his attention and efforts into feathering his arrows in order to aim them at lovers. He had a bow and a quiver full of arrows, and he was behaving nobly and elegantly. Phoebus Apollo, who had recently killed the serpent Phiton, mocked him and said, ÒWhy do you have that bow hanging from your neck, child? Tell me. I forbid it; put it down, and those arrows as well! Such equipment is not appropriate for you, for you are without doubt too weak. They suit me better. Give them to me, for I am stronger, and I can shoot better. With my arrows, just now, I killed the marvelous serpent Phiton, which ruled a whole acre of land. You should not have a bow or arrows; rather, let them be mine. You ought to be satisfied if I let you carry twigs and straws for inspiring passionate love: it isnÕt right for you to emulate me.Ó Cupid replied disdainfully: ÒSoon enough IÕll make you aware of my power, and youÕll be able to see for yourself whether my arrow can pierce. -

“Where all my layers can become reeds, all my limbs can become trees.” ~Daughter (“Smother”) “Leave me where you found me.” ~Bad Bad Hats (“Midway”) Sympathy for Apollo Before the advent of writing, myth was the main method for providing wisdom and guidance to the young, serving also to pass down collective wisdom. Since myth was an oral tradition, everything’s in question about how it was done. With no evidence of how it worked, we can only assume it did. But it is likely that the basic goal was the continued growth and thriving of a society, and this outcome expressed itself through the health and happiness of its members. So to guide someone with myth was to entertain them while subtly pruning their inclinations like a tree. If a person possessed too much of a certain trait but not enough of another, myth could inspire them to develop in the right direction, to eventually become the balanced and fully-formed person they’d wish themselves to be. With this theme in mind, there is a myth I’d like to retell involving Apollo and his failed encounter with a nymph named Daphne. It’s a sweet story, but it’s one which could have ended better. The lesson relates to how hard it can be for two people to meet and begin to get to know each other. Or maybe the theme is to learn when it’s time to quit trying. Here is my version of the myth: One day, Apollo was making his way through the woods in pursuit of inspiration. -
