CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE 3 Railway Square, Sydney COLLECT Priest Brightness of God’s glory, whom death could not conquer, nor the tomb imprison: as you have shared our frailty in human flesh, help us to share your immortality in the Spirit; let no shadow of the grave terrify us, and no fear of darkness turn our hearts from you. All sit.

FIRST READING Acts 10.34-43 Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius. ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of , preaching peace by Jesus Christ – he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’

The word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

The Psalm is said antiphonally, one verse by the reader and the next by the congregation together. At the marked asterisk *, please observe a pause for reflection.

HYMN TO THE RISEN CHRIST 1. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us:* so let us celebrate the feast, 2. Not with the old leaven of corruption and wickedness:* but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. 4 CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney 3. Christ once raised from the dead dies no more:* death has no more dominion over him. 4. In dying he died to sin once for all:* in living he lives to God. 5. See yourselves therefore as dead to sin:* and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. 6. Christ has been raised from the dead:* the first fruits of those who sleep. 7. For since by one man came death:* by another has come also the resurrection of the dead. 8. For as in Adam all die:* even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 9. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us:* so let us celebrate the feast.

SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 15.1-11 I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you – unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them – though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe.

The word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE 5 Railway Square, Sydney At 9.00am, the Gradual Hymn is sung. GRADUAL HYMN

Tune, ‘St Fulbert’;, H. J. Gauntlet (1805-76); Descant, Sir David Willcocks (b. 1919) Text, St Fulbert of Chartres (d. 1208), translated by Robert Campbell (1814-68)

1. YE choirs of new Jerusalem, 4. Triumphant in his glory now Your sweetest notes employ, His sceptre ruleth all, The Paschal victory to hymn Earth, heaven, and hell before him bow, In strains of holy joy. And at his footstool fall.

2. How Judah’s Lion burst his chains, 5. While joyful thus his praise we sing. And crushed the serpent’s head; His mercy we implore, And brought with him, Into his palace bright to bring from death’s domains, And keep us evermore. The long-imprisoned dead.

3. From hell’s devouring jaws the prey 6. All glory to the Father be, Alone our Leader bore; All glory to the Son, His ransomed hosts pursue their way All glory, Holy Ghost, to thee, Where he hath gone before. While endless ages run. Alleluya! Amen.

6 CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney GOSPEL John 20.1-18

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John. All Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

This is the Gospel of the Lord, All Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

At 9.00am, the Sermon is given here. The sermon is preached by Archbishop Sir David Moxon.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE 7 Railway Square, Sydney THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS The people stand.

Priest As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ from the dead, we remember that through the Paschal mystery we have died and been buried with him in baptism, so that we may rise with him to a new life within the family of his Church. Now that we have completed our observance of Lent, we renew the promises made at our baptism, affirming our allegiance to Christ, a rejection of all that is evil. Therefore I ask: do you turn to Christ? All I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? All I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? All I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all that is evil? All I renounce all that is evil. Do you believe in God the Father? All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? All I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Almighty God, we thank you for our fellowship in the household of faith with all those who have been baptised in your name. Keep us faithful to our baptism, and so make us ready for that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. All Amen.

The people are then sprinkled with the water.

8 CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Priest Let us pray for the world and for the church.

After each petition: Lord in your mercy, All hear our prayer. After the final petition: Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. All Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The priest says a sentence of scripture.

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS All We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, But in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION An introductory sentence or sentences may be read. All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Fat her, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith:  pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

All stand.

All And also with you. Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. An additional prayer appropriate to the season may be said here. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Sung at 9.00am

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE 11 Railway Square, Sydney Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Sung at 9.00am

Therefore we do as our saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice

For the sins of the whole world. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never ending praise: All Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen.

Sung at 9.00am
