NEW ERA, NEW CAR While level of experience varies among drivers, everyone is on the same footing when it comes to the new 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series car. The new car adds an element of competition that has not been seen since the last time a new car was introduced in 2003.

The new car plan began in 2010, overseen by a hand-picked committee of mechanical experts and technical gurus who have guided the process to its fulfillment. Drivers have spent almost the entire offseason in team tests shaking down the car as they prepare for the season, and INDYCAR held its first official test on March 5-6 and 8-9.

ENGINE MANUFACTURER COMPETITION RETURNS For the first time since 2005, the IZOD IndyCar Series will have different manufacturers producing the engines that power the car. Honda, Chevrolet and Lotus engines will be utilized in 2012. Where competition used to mainly rely among the teams, the opposing engines will add a new level of competition to the series.

Teams powered by Honda engines include Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Service Central Chip Ganassi, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi, Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing, , Sam Schmidt Motorsports, A.J. Foyt Enterprises and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Chevrolet will power Team Penske, Andretti Autosport, Panther Racing, KV Racing Technology and Ed Carpenter Racing. Lotus Dragon Racing, Lotus-HVM Racing, Lotus-DRR and Team Barracuda-BHA will have Lotus engines.

WILL DARIO WIN HIS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP? Dario Franchitti carried an 18-point advantage over Will Power following his second-place finish at last season and wrapped up his third consecutive IZOD IndyCar Series championship and fourth in five years. He did not participate in the series in 2008.

Should he win his fourth in a row in 2012, he would tie with fellow IZOD IndyCar Series driver Sebastian Bourdais for most consecutive championships. A.J. Foyt is the all-time leader with seven championships, all under USAC-sanctioning.

HINCHCLIFFE TAKES OVER GO DADDY SEAT

2011 Sunoco Rookie of the Year James Hinchcliffe has joined Andretti Autosport for the 2012 season in the Go Daddy seat. His self-deprecating humor and outgoing personality, in addition to success during his rookie season in 2011, ingratiated him with principals at Go Daddy, which continued as a team sponsor after the departure of following the 2011 season.

Hinchcliffe, a 25-year old native of Oakville, , was left without a ride for 2012 after his former team, Newman-Haas Racing, ceased participation in the IZOD IndyCar Series. With them, he recorded seven top-10 finishes in 16 races after missing the first event of the season. His season-high finish was in fourth at Long Beach, New Hampshire and Kentucky.

POWER LOOKING TO MOVE UP After finishing runner-up to the champion for two consecutive years, Team Penske’s Will Power is looking to move up a spot for the first time in his career.

Last season, he tied series season highs with six victories and eight starts from pole, falling just 18 points shy of a championship. He also grabbed his first oval victory at in June. In 2010, he led Franchitti into the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but crashed on lap 144 while his rival finished eighth.

BARRICHELLO JOINS THE IZOD INDYCAR SERIES Rubens Barrichello, the longest-tenured driver in history, will begin a new journey with KV Racing Technology for the 2012 season. The 39-year-old Brazilian was persuaded by his long-time friend, Tony Kanaan, and several positive tests in the new car to make the move.

“To be a winner in IndyCar you have to be a complete driver because you will have to compete under a whole range of conditions and in various configurations,” Barrichello said. “With all my experience I will start as a rookie, but I think I will get better as the year progresses.” Barrichello made 322 starts in an F1 career that spanned from 1993-2011 with six teams. He was runner- up in the Formula One championship in 2002 and 2004, and earned 11 victories, 68 podiums, 106 top- five finishes and 172 top-10 showings.

NEW EVENT HIGHLIGHT 2012 SCHEDULE

A new event and a return to two long-time favorites highlight the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule this season.

The first Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be held June 1-3, 2012—a week after the . Tony Kanaan (2007) and Justin Wilson (’08) won IZOD IndyCar Series events on the picturesque 2.1-mile street course, but the series has not returned since.

INDYCAR will sanction a race in for the first time Sunday, Aug. 19, on a 3.87-mile in Qingdao with the long-term objective of constructing a permanent racing and entertainment venue. Known for its German and French heritage, Qingdao boasts an almost European atmosphere, with the city often referred to as “China’s Switzerland.” The race weekend will coincide with the popular Qingdao International Beer Festival.

Auto Club Speedway has been confirmed as the final race of the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season. The series is returning after a seven-year absence, the last race taking place in 2005. The 2-mile oval will race under the lights for the first time on Sep. 15.

There have been four IZOD IndyCar Series races conducted at the venue that opened in 1997 and CART races held from 1997-2002. Originally known as California Speedway, on Feb. 21, 2008, the Automobile Club of Southern California became the title sponsor of the raceway, renaming it . Sam Hornish, Jr. won the first race in 2002 after beating across the finish line by a mere 0.0281 seconds.

MAZDA ROAD TO INDY CHAMPIONS MOVE UP

All three series champions of the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system have progressed to the next level of competition for the 2012 season.

Petri Suvanto, winner of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship powered by Mazda, has joined in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. The team was crowned team champion last season with drivers and Nick Andries.

22-year-old Frenchman , winner of the 2011 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear, has moved up to Firestone Indy Lights with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. The team has won four of the last six Firestone Indy Lights titles, including the 2011 championship with Josef Newgarden.

Newgarden will compete the full IZOD IndyCar Series season with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing. The 21-year-old from Hendersonville, Tenn., captured the Firestone Indy Lights title last season with Sam Schimdt Motorsports on five wins and ten podium finishes. With every driver essentially being a “rookie” in 2012 when it comes to driving the new car, Newgarden is confident his team will be able to be competitive with the more experienced teams.

“I think I will have all the tools to the job for them, and it’s going to be collaboration,” Newgarden said. “It’s not going to come from one guy. It’s going to take everyone coming together to make it work. I think we already have that and that’s important when you come to a new group. We’ve got a great chance for success.”

FACES IN NEW PLACES

The IZOD IndyCar Series will see several familiar faces changing teams this season. , formerly with Andretti Autosport, has moved to A.J. Foyt Racing in the No. 14 ABC Supply car. Justin Wilson has moved to Dale Coyne Racing after a season-ending injury while with Dreyer & Reinbold. Sebastien Bourdais, who competed 2011 on a partial schedule with Dale Coyne Racing, moves to Lotus Dragon Racing with rookie Katherine Legge. Ed Carpenter has formed his own team and plans to compete the full season after winning his first race at Kentucky in 2011.

Simon Pagenaud, who competed in three different events in 2011 with three different teams, moves to newly rebranded team Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports. Takuma Sato moves from KV Racing Technology to Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and —formerly of Sam Schmidt Motorsports—will compete with Team Barracuda-BHA. Oriol Servia, who was left without a ride with the closing of Newman-Haas Racing’s IZOD IndyCar Series team, joins Lotus Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

THE ROOKIES

Katherine Legge and Simon Pagenaud will join Josef Newgarden as rookies in the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series.

Katherine Legge, who joins Lotus Dragon Racing for 2012, made a name for herself in European open- wheel racing. She began competing in North America in the and graduated to the in 2006 with PKV Racing. She competed the next year with Dale Coyne Racing, and was left without a ride for the 2008 season and returned to Europe to compete in touring cars. Simon Pagenaud will join her as a rookie this season with Schmidt/Hamilton Motorsports after three races in 2011. He filled in for Justin Wilson at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Ana Beatriz at Barber and Simona de Silvestro at Infineon. The Frenchman won the 2006 Atlantics Championship at with current Sam Schmidt Motorsports team manager Rob Edwards.

New IZOD IndyCar Series competitor Rubens Barrichello will be a rookie at the Indianapolis 500.

THE VETERANS

The IZOD IndyCar Series will have an impressive mix of racing veterans this season who will do everything possible to keep the record books from having a “Franchitti” or “Power” next to the 2012 Champion category. The duo has dominated the championship race the past two seasons, and vets like Scott Dixon, Ryan Briscoe, Helio Castroneves, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay are ready for their moment in the spotlight.

Dixon, winner of the 2003 and 2008 IndyCar championships, fought off three other contenders in 2011 for the A.J. Foyt Oval Trophy with top-five finishes in all seven oval races (the season finale at on Oct.16 is not included). He finished ten points ahead of teammate Franchitti, but fell 55 points shy of the series title. He’ll be looking to claim his third championship in 2012 again teamed with Franchitti, but should expect close competition from other hungry veterans.

WHO WILL BE THE NEXT FIRST-TIME WINNER?

Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg – Sunday, March 25 at Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. Helio Castroneves ended a winless drought of more than a year by winning the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg for the third time on March 25. Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Shell V-Power/ Ultra Team Penske Chevrolet, passed Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon for second place with a pass on the outside of Turn 1 on Lap 73 and went on to score the 26th win of his Indy car career. Dixon finished second in his Honda-powered car, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport in a Chevrolet-powered car. James Hinchcliffe and Ryan Briscoe rounded out the top-five. It was an emotional day for Castroneves, who dedicated his win to the late Dan Wheldon. After taking the checkered flag, Castroneves stopped his car at Turn 10 and honored Wheldon, who called St. Petersburg home, by climbing the fence and patting the "Dan Wheldon Way" sign located there.

Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama – Sunday, April 1 at Barber Motorsports Park Will Power held off Scott Dixon on a restart with 16 laps left to win the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama for the second year in a row. Dixon, who was 3.3709 seconds behind in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car, has the distinction of being the race runner-up all three years (twice to Power and in the inaugural race to Helio Castroneves). He broke a tie with teammate Dario Franchitti with 27 second-place finishes on the all-time list and is one behind Castroneves. Castroneves, the pole sitter, finished third to maintain the points lead in the young season and continue his resurgence after a disappointing 2011 season. He held off Graham Rahal in the No. 38 Service Chip Ganassi Racing car by 0.2245 of a second. Simon Pagenaud finished fifth and James Hinchcliffe was sixth after starting on the front row for the first time in his IZOD IndyCar Series career. Mike Conway, who provided A.J. Foyt Racing its best non-oval starting position (fourth) since 2007, finished seventh.

Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach – Sunday, April 15 at Streets of Long Beach Will Power, who started the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in Row 6 because of a penalty assessed on all 11 Chevrolet-powered cars for unapproved engine changes, overcame the deficit by stretching 18.5 gallons of E85 the last 21 laps on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn street circuit, all the while being chased down by Simon Pagenaud. It was Team Penske's first Indy car victory at Long Beach since 2001 (Helio Castroneves), while Power won the Champ Car finale on the course in 2008 with KV Racing Technology. Pagenaud, who pitted the No. 77 Honda-powered car for the final time on Lap 70 of 85, finished 0.8675 of a second back. Over the final three laps, he ran lap times 1.5-2 seconds quicker than Power (1:10.4941 to 1:12.0333 for instance on Lap 84). Pagenaud, who led laps for the first time since 2007 in Belgium, also gave Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports its highest finish since Jaques Lazier at Nashville in 2001 (as Sam Schmidt Motorsports). Seven different teams were represented in the top 10. James Hinchcliffe, driving the No. 27 GoDaddy.com car for Andretti Autosport, finished third as teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay incurred a 30-second penalty on the final lap for avoidable contact with the No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car. It was his first podium finish in his IZOD IndyCar Series career. Sato, seeking his first IZOD IndyCar Series podium, finished eighth. Hunter-Reay checked in sixth. Tony Kanaan, who started 19th, finished a season-best fourth and JR Hildebrand was fifth -- his best since placing fourth at Iowa last June.
