JAMES BRAVERY s of James Bravery and Martha Rose 1779 03 Dec James of James and Martha Bravery Dorking 1822 12 Feb James Bravery married Sarah Brett, by licence St. Mary’s, Lambeth 1843 12 Jan James Bravery died Dorking 1843 James Bravery miller of Dorking will (very long) From Jane Masri James Bravery junior (1779-1843) was their eldest son and would seem to capitalize on the inheritance from his father! He married Sarah Brett, by licence 12/2/1822 at St. Mary’s, Lambeth one year after his father’s death. James and Sarah had two daughters, Mary Anne, baptized 9/8/1822 and Ellen (1824-1886) Tragically, Sarah died young at the age of 39 one year after the birth of Ellen. Ellen went on to marry a successful brewer of Farnham, Surrey, by the name of George Trimmer. I was fortunate to find a copy of their marriage certificate attached to solicitors documents concerning land sales which revealed that Richard Attlee, Elizabeth Attlee and Harriet Ann Attlee acted as witnesses as well as her sister, now Mary Ann Watson! James owned and leased various mills during his lifetime. Birchenbridge, near Horsham, Sussex was bought by him in 1824 and later sold. Another in Catford, Lewisham, but most notably, Westcott Mill near Dorking, which was leased by him from a Richard Fuller. James, Mary Anne’s father, must have been quite well known in and around Dorking during his days as he is remembered in a book1 and immortalized in the following passage……’ The old fashioned comfortable looking brick residence, with the limes, grass plat and palisades in front, is almost unchanged from the time it was so many years ago occupied by the late James Bravery, who once during his long career as a miller, and while on his way from Horsham Market, was attacked by highwaymen….’ A little later in the book, ‘ The Old House, where Dr. Cornish now resides, was formerly the residence of James Bravery. Mr. Bravery dropped down dead in the stable close by on the 13 January 1843’. I have identified the house as being in South Street, opposite the Cricketers public house. The tragedy of his death shortly after the fire that destroyed the mill, left Mary Ann and Ellen orphaned but not penniless, as they were well provided for under the conditions of their fathers will, written in 1830. The fire occurred late on January 7 1843 and it’s felt that this hastened James’s death which happened on January 12 (not 13 as stated above) He and Sarah are buried at St. Martins, Dorking.

1 Memories of Old Dorking. By Charles Rose. 1977 Kohler & Coombes, Dorking. Originally their last resting place was a large railed tomb, but just the inscribed top slab survives today, resting on the ground near the footpath.

The County Chronicle Surrey Herald & Weekly Advertiser. Tuesday January 17 1843 ‘Another lamentable fire took place on the night of the 7th inst, near Dorking, by which a water mill, belonging to R. Fuller, Esq., at Westcot, in the occupation of Mr. J. Bravery, was entirely burned down, with 60 loads of corn therein. The fire was observed by a person passing on the high road, about 12 o’clock at night, gave an immediate alarm. It appears that the mill door was open, and from all the information contained, there is every reason to suppose that it was the work of an incendiary. The night was intensely dark, and 8 persons, endevouring to draw up the engine in a proper position were accidentally immersed in the water (14 feet deep), one of whom had a narrow escape of life, but happily the whole were rescued without injury, except a good ducking.’

HENRY BRAVERY s of James Bravery and Martha Rose 1785 07 Oct Henry of James and Martha Bravery Dorking 1820 11 Apr Henry Bravery married Mary Peters, Shere Surrey 1833 15 Jul Henry Bravery of Rawhook age 47 buried Dorking From Jane Masri: Henry was also a miller as was his eldest son and a grandson. In 1821, at the baptism of his first child and shortly before the death of his father, he is described as ‘miller at Westcott’, which gives the impression that the mill was leased by his father and passed down to James upon his death. This tells us that the mill had been an important part of the family at least since 1821 until the fire and death of James in 1843. The mill was rebuilt of brick and opened in 1850 and was run by a nephew of James, a Thomas Killick, well into the 1880’s.
