  • 19. Liberty Square
    19. Liberty Square Liberty Square was named by the Darwin Town Council in June 1919 to commemorate the ‘Darwin Rebellion’ of 17 December 1918. That rebellion, which culminated in a protest directed at Government House by hundreds of workers on this site, and the unrest leading to it, resulted in a 1919 Royal Commission into the Administration of the Northern Territory conducted by Justice Norman Kirkwood Ewing (1870-1928). On the western side of Liberty Square is a memorial cairn at the place where the sub-sea cable from Banjowangie (Banyuwangi) Indonesia was joined with the Overland Telegraph Line to revolutionise communications in Australia on 20 November 1871. Towards the eastern side is a plinth and plaque commemorating the scientific achievement of Pietro ‘Commendatore’ Baracchi who, in collaboration with colleagues in Singapore and Banjowangie, established true longitude of Port Darwin and other Australian colonial and New Zealand capital cities in 1883 in the grounds of the Port Darwin Post Office and Telegraphic Station (now Parliament House). On the eastern side near the Supreme Court is a Banyan tree, which is valued by the community as a remnant of the original Darwin foreshore vegetation. It is over 200 years old and was the congregation point for Larrakia youths prior to ceremonies that took place under the nearby Tamarind tree. Liberty Square was the site for the original Darwin Cenotaph, which is now located on the old Darwin Oval on the Esplanade. History Sub-sea Telegraph Cables From the 1850s telegraph technology was very quickly taken up by the Australian colonies, building networks across their own territories, and then soon connecting to each other.

  • Kunmanggur, Legend and Leadership a Study of Indigenous Leadership and Succession Focussing on the Northwest Region of the North
KUNMANGGUR , LEGEND AND LEADERSHIP A STUDY OF INDIGENOUS LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESSION FOCUSSING ON THE NORTHWEST REGION OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY OF AUSTRALIA Bill Ivory Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Charles Darwin University 2009 Declaration This is to certify that this thesis comprises only my original work towards the Ph.D., except where indicated, that due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other materials used, and that this thesis is less than 100,000 words in length excluding Figures, Tables and Appendices. Bill Ivory 2009 ii Acknowledgements I wish to thank my supervisors Kate Senior, Diane Smith and Will Sanders. They have been extremely supportive throughout this research process with their expert advice, enthusiasm and encouragement. A core group of Port Keats leaders supported this thesis project. They continually encouraged me to record their stories for the prosperity of their people. These people included Felix Bunduck, Laurence Kulumboort, Bernard Jabinee, Patrick Nudjulu, Leo Melpi, Les Kundjil, Aloyisius Narjic, Bede Lantjin, Terence Dumoo, Ambrose Jongmin. Mathew Pultchen, Gregory Mollinjin, Leo Melpi, Cassima Narndu, Gordon Chula and many other people. Sadly, some of these leaders passed away since the research commenced and I hope that this thesis is some recognition of their extraordinary lives. Boniface Perdjert, senior traditional owner and leader for the Kardu Diminin clan was instrumental in arranging for me to attend ceremonies and provided expert information and advice. He was also, from the start, very keen to support the project. Leon Melpi told me one day that he and his middle-aged generation are „anthropologists‟ and he is right.

  • Mickey Dewar: Memories, Books and Museums David Carment
Mickey Dewar: Memories, books and museums David Carment Mickey Dewar’s contributions to the history of her beloved Northern Territory were immense. She was an elegant and original writer, a careful researcher with a knack for discovering elusive sources, the energetic member of numerous heritage and history boards and committees, a mentor for other historians and history students, an interesting and always thoroughly prepared school and tertiary teacher, a much sought after public speaker, the Territory’s most innovative history curator and an always helpful librarian. She was also sparkling company and probably the most rapid reader I have ever known. Like many others, I learned a lot from her. I do not in this paper attempt to cover all the numerous aspects of her life as a historian. Instead, I recount some of my own memories of Mickey before discussing examples of her sole-authored books and curatorial work. Memories I first met Mickey in Darwin during 1984. I was on the Northern Territory Literary Awards committee and she was a prize winner in the short story section. Her entry was a beautifully composed and very funny account of schoolteachers in Arnhem Land. She commented to me at the prize- giving ceremony that she was also a historian and was writing a Master’s thesis at the University of New England about missionary contact with the Yolngu people of north-east Arnhem Land.1 A version of it was later 1 Dewar, ‘Strange Bedfellows’. 267 IN SeARCh Of The NeveR-NeveR published as a book.2 As she later recounted, her discussions from 1979 onwards with her friends the Northern Territory historians Ann McGrath and Alan Powell and reading Alan’s Far Country: A Short History of the Northern Territory3 had already led her to discover that the Territory was ‘a very exciting place’.
