The educational marketplace is a highly competitive environment. Students have a choice of where they can attend, and it may not be their parents’ alma mater. Students are looking for leading-edge programs, interesting and creative learning experiences, access to research, and well-qualified faculty members. Faculty also have a choice where to teach and are often seeking these same things. For King’s to attract students and recruit faculty, it will require ongoing investment in program development, research opportunities, new facilities, student financial aid, and scholarships. Our department oversees 207 protected areas in Alberta, and it makes sense for us to partner with universities like King’s to conduct research, monitor wildlife, and implement environmental programs—it’s a win-win relationship. We have worked with King’s science faculty and students for several years now—it helps further a student’s education and brings good results to our department. It’s also about sustainability; partnering with King’s students helps us make the best use of our own staff resources and can lead to operating efficiencies. The quality of research and dedication of King’s science students is superb. One important project has involved monitoring and analysis of how wildlife and humans share space. Dr. David Long, King’s sociology prof (left) along with students Emily Anderson, Samantha Flasha, in the summer of her fourth year as psychology major, and Derrick Kwantes, biology major, formed a team to work an environmental studies/history major at King’s, had with Creating Hope Society Director, Bernadette Lahtail on the research project an internship at Lady Flower Gardens, just north of Aboriginal Boys Matter Too. Edmonton.

“Throughout the week, we would bring people from the The Mustard Seed, a non-profit organization that reaches out and ministers to the less fortunate in our society, to the Lady Flower Gardens site. It was a way for them to get out of the city and enjoy nature. I loved seeing their excitement when we actually harvested the fruits and vegetables from the seeds we planted. Through this experience, I was getting a practical education on the real meaning of stewardship and creation care —doing something not just for economic EXCELLENCE IS AN ATTITUDE – value, but for faith values as well,” says Samantha.
