  • Intermixx Webzine Online Edition
by Noel Ramos I recently interviewed the lovely Quinn Lemley, a rather unique InterMixx mem- ber in that she performs a hybrid of jazz, cabaret and lounge music. INTERMIXX: Quinn, I am very pleased that you have joined InterMixx and are in- volved in our activities. Do you consider yourself an "indie" artist, and if so, how do you define indie? QUINN: Yes Noel, I am definitely an "Indie," so much of the jazz/cabaret/lounge community is these days with labels pulling back their support in our genre. The great thing about being an "Indie" is that I had the opportunity to create my own vision for each of my recordings. INTERMIXX: In your opinion, what are the main problems concerning indie musicians at this time? QUINN: Financing and Distribution. We are "the engine" for everything. INTERMIXX: Your style of music is still somewhat unique amongst our membership, and I commend you on your DIY attitude. Can you describe what you do for our readers? QUINN: Of course, I am a hybrid of lounge/jazz and caba- ret. Some of my music is a big band feel and others a small four piece combo, it's sultry, sexy, fun music. Sort of a cross between Keeley Smith, Ann-Margret and Julie London. INTERMIXX: Tell us more about your portrayal of Rita Hayworth, and how that came to happen. Was it largely because of your resemblance to the beauty queen? QUINN: You are a doll, yes, I was doing a musical off Broadway and a friend of mine, Preston Ridge saw it, and he said that I should do a musical about the life and music of Rita Hayworth because I resembled her.

It has failed to understand that the world is not for the beholding. It is for hearing. It is not legible, but audible. — Jacques Attali, Noise: The Political Economy of Music You’ve been invited to a ball. A friend texted you the flier earlier in the day with the address and descriptions of the categories and promises they will be there “on time” (a promise you know they won’t keep). When you arrive, a little before Legends, Statements, and Stars, you meander around the room looking for your friends’ house table to put down the few things you’ve brought along with you to survive the long evening (wallet, keys, phone, lipstick) and talk to folks about things neither of you will remember tomorrow. You won’t remember, not because the conversation is lacking in wit and energy; the opposite really. Everyone around you is laughing loudly, slapping knees and hands together in exclamation. It seems as though the room is talking over each other with such speed and enthusiasm that you can barely focus on your own words as they spill out into the large room which only seems to get smaller as more and more people flood in from the outside.

Austin tLive Musicex Capital Aof the sWorLd deStination anywheRe auStin, texaS continued it’s A Lot to Live up to, that Texas-sized boast about being the “Live Music Capital of the world.” Austin adopted it as their official slogan in 1991, with no voting or formal competition for the title involved, of course, apart from the city council members who did have the modesty to rule out the slightly more inflated “Live Music Capital of the Universe.” As such, it’s a claim to fame as open for debate as any truck stop’s self-proclaimed “world’s Best Coffee” or w“ orld Famous Chicken-Fried Steak.” The appropriate response to any such pronouncements should always be a certain degree of skepticism: “Prove it.” The key word in this case is “live.” For district. And when visitors arrive at Austin- the better part of the last 40 years, the best Bergstrom International Airport, they’re in Texas—and a good many notables from immediately greeted by Texas music, be it beyond—have all found themselves drawn piped through the terminal sound system or to the center of the state and used the capital live onstage, right in the concourse, as part city’s many stages to launch, or even re-launch, of the “Music in the Air” concert series. their music careers. Austin is where Abbott, does all of that merit the “Live Music Texas native willie Nelson reinvented himself Capital of the world” title? UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 © Copyright by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire by Carl Douglas Schottmiller Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David H Gere, Chair This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the competitive reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, drawing upon approaches and perspectives from LGBT Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Performance Studies. Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. ii While most scholars analyze RuPaul’s Drag Race primarily through content analysis of the aired television episodes, this dissertation combines content analysis with ethnography in order to connect the television show to tangible practices among fans and effects within drag communities.
