I also I like biking and taking photographs. •I am 16 years old. •In my spare time I draw, work out, dance folk dances, have fun with my friends and do other things. I’m 15 years old. I have 2 sisters and one brother. I like swimming, dancing, sports and extreme’s things, but I don’t like skiing. Egita I’m 15 years old. I enjoy drawing and dancing. I also like sports and spending time by nature. In 1601 Swedish troops captured Turaida castle. After the battle a clerk of the castle Mr Greif found among the dead a small girl. He undertook to bring up the orphan and named her Maija. The years passed by and Maija grew up so beautiful, that people named her the Rose of Turaida. Gardener Victor Heil, the finacé of Maija, lived in Sigulda castle. In the evenings they met each other at Gūtmanis cave. Proposal to Maija was made also by Adam Jakubovsky. Maija rejected him and Jakubovsky decided to get her by deceit. He wrote a note, as it were from Victor, and invited her to meet at Gūtmanis cave. When Maija arrived, she understood that she was deceived. The girl decided better to die and remain faithful to her fiancé. She had a red silk scarf around her neck and she told Jakubovsky, that it would protect from the sword cut and asked to try. Jakubovsky tried and Maija lifeless fell down at his feet. Victor Heil found the murdered girl and he rushed in despair to Turaida for help. At the cave there was found gardener’s axe, lost in a hurry, therefore suspicion about Maija`s murder fell on Victor. He was arrested and tried. The course of events changed, when arrived Skudritis, a comrade-in- arms of Jakubovsky, who arrived in the court and told the truth. Victor was justified, but Maija was buried at the edge of Turaida graveyard, where Victor planted a linden tree on her grave. In nowdays The Rose of Turaida’s grave is a symbol of love and often newlyweds put flowers on her grave to strenghten their love towards each other. Thank you for your attention! .

Part One gives an outline of the known history of the Livonian language, the history of research into it, and of its own relations with its closest geographical neighbour, Latvian, a linguistically unrelated Indo-European language. A state of Latvian/Livonian bilingualism has existed for virtually all of the Livonians' (or Livs') recorded history, and certainly for the past two centuries. Part Two consists of a Descriptive Grammar of the present- day Livonian language as recorded in an extensive corpus provided by one speaker.

LATVIA Gunta Zakite Head of Visitor Centre [email protected] The Turaida Museum Reserve Turaida Museum Reserve is located 50 km from capital Riga and 5 km from Sigulda in the territory of Gauja National Park and Vidzeme region Specially protected cultural monument Turaida Museum Reserve is a unique cultural and historic site of Latvia and an important European cultural tourism attraction. The Turaida Museum Reserve mission is the creation of a harmonious society, showing the Latvian lifestyle development and the universal human values with the millennium accumulated natural and cultural heritage of the regional and historical centre of Turaida. During the years of its activity the Turaida Museum Reserve has accumulated a considerable experience in preservation and popularization of intangible cultural heritage. Folk-song Park – Folk-song Hill (Dainu Hill) and Folk-song Garden 26 sculptures made by Indulis Ranka is a story about Latvian visdom of life, folksongs and Krišjānis Barons who collected and systematized them. Along with Folk-song Garden, which was developed in further years, it forms the Folk- song Park where in the course of years hundreds of ethnographical and folk groups have performed. Baltic Museology School 2004 Sunday June 27 Kremerata Baltica festival Participants were invited to a concert of Shostakovich and Shnittke given by Kremerata Baltica in the 18th century Turaida Church. Opening ceremony at Turaida Castle The Director, Janis Garjans, welcomed everyone. He introduced Dr Hans-Martin Hinz, Chair of ICOM Europe, who spoke of the great changes in Europe and the continuing need to reintegrate the former East and West. He stressed the role of museums in explaining our and others’ culture and in celebrating common values, and he wished everyone ‘days of inspiration’. The State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Daniels Pavluts, spoke of the special role of cultural heritage in a changing society, of society’s need to access both material and non- material heritage, and the need for innovation. He hoped the BMS would become an annual event. After a glass of wine, the presentation of Sigulda walking-sticks, and a group photograph, a buffet supper was offered at the Administration building of the Turaida Museum Reserve, hosted by Anna Jurkane. There followed a tour of Gutmanis Cave, Knights’ Stronghold and New Sigulda Castle, led by Ilga Korklisa. Monday June 28 Contributions from participants Each participant was invited to give a brief presentation on his or her museum, its strengths and achievements. These made clear what a rich variety of museums was represented, and how greatly they varied not only in size, subject and governance, but in their underlying purpose and emphasis. The paper analyzes the treatment of the medieval status of the Coastal Southern Pärnumaa in historical tradition. Linguistic evidence of the contacts of Salaca Livonian with the neighbouring Pärnumaa dialects is studied. It is shown that the common features may either be the result of the common origin of the Estonian Pärnumaa dialects and the Livonian language in prehistoric times, or they are brought to light by language contacts and reveal adstratum phenomena. The Livonian substratum in the coastal dialect of southern Pärnu- maa is a matter of debate in the case of some morphosyntactic similarities. Līgatne, Sigulda, Turaida Day tour on 08.07.2018. 9:00 start of day Excursion in Secret soviet bunker. In the territory of the rehabilitation centre Līgatne, 9 m underground, there is a well-equipped facility with a total area of 2,000 sq.m, whose secrecy grading was removed only in 2003. The bunker was built during the Cold War when the Soviet Union maintained constant high alert for a Western attack, more specifically a nuclear assault from the United States. It is hard to imagine, though, how the elite of Soviet Latvia would have been rushed to the bunker in a few minutes, given that the distance from Riga to Ligatne is 75 kilometers. This makes one suspect that the bunker might have been used also in case a nuclear war launched by the Soviet Union. Ilgvars Misāns VALMIERA IN THE HANSEATIC LEAGUE: HERITAGE RESEARCH Nowadays, most residents of Latvia have positive or at least neutral associations with the name “Hansa”. Hardly anyone is surprised to see this name on signboards of Latvian enterprises, for example, Hansa hotel, bakery, wine gallery or beauty parlour. The name is also used by logistics companies and tile traders, and even by a secondary school located in the centre of Rīga. Additionally, medieval festivals and markets in Latvia are organised under the sign of the Hanseatic League. Rīga and other Latvian towns, such as Cēsis, Koknese, Kuldīga, Limbaţi, Straupe, Valmiera, and Ventspils tend to pride themselves on the participation in the Hanseatic League. In short, people see the name of Hansa a lot, but what do the people who use this name today know about the historical Hanseatic League? 1. HANSEATIC LEAGUE The Earlier and Current Understanding of the Nature of the Hanseatic League A person who is not familiar with scientific literature on medieval history is likely to answer the aforementioned question as follows: a mighty political union of German towns with the goal of ensuring their dominance in trade in the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions using their shared privileges. This explanation was generally accepted for a long time, it is 1 still used in popular publications1 and reference literature2, although recent historical research offers another definition of the Hanseatic League.3 Interpretation of the nature of the Hanseatic League has changed because historians have recently been studying it not only as a participant of political events, but also from the perspective of economic and social history.
