“MAY PILGRIMAGE”

Notre Dame de

In Autumn of 1978, with maps and guide books, a priest friend and I embarked on our own tour of the provinces of . We began in Alsace-Lorraine and would go as far as Occitan and the Auvergne. As we traveled from province to province, we were not only impressed by the cheese, the wine, the food and spectacular scenery, we were often speechless! Jokingly, we devised a future itinerary open to parishioners. We decided to dub the tour "The Shrines and Wines of Europe.”

The approach to the shrine of Notre Dame de Rocamadour is one of great natural beauty. Set in a gorge towering above a tributary of the Dordogne River, Rocamadour has, for centuries, attracted pilgrims. The sanctuary of the of Rocamadour has had a special appeal. Kings, bishops, noblemen, and knights have sung its praises. In our time, renowned composer Francis Poulenc was profoundly disturbed by the death of two friends. He made a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Rocamadour that changed. his life. He had been a lapsed Catholic. After his visit to Rocamadour, his life was transformed. Increasingly, his music reflected religious themes. In 1936, his Litanies a la vierge noire was dedicated to the Black Madonna of Rocamadour. Later, he would compose the Stabat Mater, The Mass in G, Gloria, and Sept respons des tenebres.

Legend traces the history of Rocamadour back to Apostolic times. St. Amadour (Amator) has been identified variously with Zaccheus and the husband of St. Veronica. Some claim that he was a servant in the house of the . Fleeing persecution, St. Amadour and St. Veronica, in a fragile skiff, were guided by an to the coast of Aquitaine. There, St. Amadour preached the and eventually built a chapel to Our Lady.

High above the town of Rocamadour, a vertical rock rises. Crowned by its church and fortified castle walls, Rocamadour presents a vision of the - a time when it attracted as many pilgrims as the Holy Land, , and Santiago de Compostela. In the shrine, 216 steps, the Via Sancta, lead to the Chapel of the Black Madonna. There, the thousand year old statue of the Mother and Child enthroned welcomes pilgrims who have made the ascent on their knees. There is a sense of awe and mystery at Rocamadour that humbles and exalts and makes us aware that we are at the threshold of heaven on earth. As in other holy places, we can say, “Lord, it is good for us to be here!”

Why we are having a collection for snow removal.

I was born in January. I love when it snows. I love skiing. I’m a winter person. But there is an obvious downside to winter weather … the cost of snow removal.

This past winter brought not only recurring snow storms but a mounting bill for shoveling, plowing and salting. The cost of snow removal for the past winter amounted to $15,300! This compares to $3,300 spent in 2006 and $9,600 spent in 2007 for snow removal.

Our parish, like its parishioners, has felt the impact of these difficult economic times. Unfortunately, collections over the past months have declined while our expenses have not. Because of the dual pressures of the rising costs and flat collections we are asking for your help. I hope that you will be generous in your support and help us meet the cost of the past winter.

In today’s Gospel, says that God is glorified when a disciple, grafted in Christ, produces abundantly and bears much fruit. The disciple must then be a good steward of that abundance.

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST

It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish- ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us.

However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes.

We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission.

We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner.

We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list.

Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor- rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records.

Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con- gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
