Oh, we’ve known that for years, but recently publishers have been getting into the game in a big way. Too big, arguably. As publishers struggle, it seems like more and more they are turning to graphic novels as new revenue streams, to diversify existing properties, or as ways to repackage old content. With the deluge of titles coming at us, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a librarian who isn’t deeply invested in their GN collection or tuned into the world of comics publishing to discern the excellent titles from the merely popular, and the quality from the... well, crap. And oh there’s a lot of crap out there these days... But there’s a whole lot of great stuff, too. Comics are a wonderful and unique medium, which allow any kind of story or instruction to be delivered in a way that is fun, engaging, and accessible. Just like other storytelling forms, the content can be simple and amusing, or it can be deep and challenging. It’s no surprise that comics are seeing such a jump in popularity and acceptance now. -
Vertigo and the Auteur Figure
Ambiguous Authorities: Vertigo and the Auteur Figure ISABELLE LICARI-GUILLAUME Abstract: This article examines authorial performance in the context of DC’s Vertigo line. In the 1990s, Vertigo gained its reputation as an innovative and progressive imprint by promoting the work of British scriptwriters, who were hailed as true author figures, despite the inherently collaborative nature of the mainstream comics industry. In a manner reminiscent of “auteur theory”, writers such as Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis or Grant Morrison developed attractive authorial personae which they consistently displayed through interviews, letter columns or social media, but also, more importantly, by inserting their avatars within the comics they scripted. Upon closer examination, however, it becomes clear that their work in fact simultaneously asserts and destabilizes writerly authority, in a manner that is consistent with Linda Hutcheon’s view of postmodernity. By multiplying author figures and playfully disseminating authority, Vertigo authors question their own authorial control over the text, asserting instead the crucial role played by the reader. Bio: Isabelle Licari-Guillaume is a Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of English at Université Bordeaux Montaigne, France. She specializes in contemporary comics studies and has recently defended her PhD, which examined the British Invasion of American comics, its aeshetic evolution over time, and its influence on the editorial history of DC's Vertigo imprint. Her other fields of interest include translation and gender studies, on which she has written several articles. In 2015, she edited a collection of essays on the body in comics (Les Langages du corps dans la bande dessinée, l'Harmattan) and is currently editing another volume, Translators of Comics / Les Traducteurs de bande dessinée. -

Nine years ago today saw 19 terrorists kill 2,977 people and destroy the World Trade Center in New York City. The comics industry rallied to provide what aid they could to the emergency relief efforts in the only way they could – by producing comics. Tribute. The first hero on Ground Zero was Spider-man in Amazing Spider-Man volume 2 #36 – widely known as the Black Issue. J Michael Straczynski's tale split audiences in November, 2001. It was widely agreed paying tribute was a good thing, but critics questioned if this was the best way. Spider-man was chastised for not preventing the tragedy in the story and provided what little help he could on the scene, and the scene was horrific. It was reported that John Romita, Jr found drawing emotional due to his attachment as a former New Yorker but didn't shy away from depicting the carnage of the catastrophe. The biggest contention for some, bar complaints of disrupting continuity, was the assemblage of the Juggernaut, Kingpin, Doctor Octopus and Magneto looking on at the destruction while Doctor Doom wept. (eBay – $36) Marvel followed up with Heroes : The World's Greatest Superhero Creators Honor the World's Greatest Heroes in December. This 64-page poster book made headlines when it united the likes of Spider-man, Captain America and the Hulk with emergency personnel tackling the aftermath. The book also united comic book writers and artists Alan Moore, Kevin Smith, Kurt Busiek, Paul Dini, Neil Gaiman, Stan Lee, Jim Krueger, George Perez, Sam Kieth, Alan Davis, Frank Miller, Frank Quitely and others. -

GRAPHIC NOVEL BOOK CLUBS READING LIST • 2014–2016 Toucan art by Rick Geary In 2014, Comic-Con International: San Diego in partnership with the San Diego Public Library, embarked on an ambi- tious project to start a series of Graphic Novel Book Clubs in some of the local branches around the greater San Diego area. Two branches started in 2014, one at the Downtown Central Library location and one at the Mission Valley branch. In 2015, additional groups were added to both the North Park and La Jolla branches. Over the past 3 years, the branches have read over 75 separate graphic novels (and graphic novel series). We’ve compiled this combined reading list showing everything that was read from 2014 through the end of 2016. Some books were “All- Group Selections,” meaning all four groups got together to discuss one book. Multiple volume-reads, usually taking place over more than one meeting, are also highlighted, as are books that were Eisner Award winners (see the key below for an explanation of the symbols accompanying each book in this list). What have we learned? Well, people LOVE comics! Surprisingly, some of our book club members had never read a comic book or graphic novel until they joined their book clubs! They had gone to Comic-Con and were fascinated by what they saw there, and when the opportunity arose, they joined the club. For the most part over the past three years, our book club membership has remained constant, with very few people leav- ing. The clubs meet every month, with a holiday party in December that combines all of them and includes the reading of the above-mentioned “All-Group Selection.” What has grown out of these clubs is a sense of community—some might even call it family—within the various clubs.
