Colquitt County at Grayson colquitt county grayson Opponent Score Opponent Score flurry of upsets in Class 5A has formed an unlikely semifinal matchup between a pair of Cook 9-15 (L) Kell 10-13 (L) ANo. 3 seeds in Colquitt County and Grayson. The two teams have combined to earn five of their six postseason victories on the road. Colquitt County toppled Jenkins 50-21, pulled out South Panola 35-65 (L) Spain Park 20-9 (W) a 48-47 thriller at M.L. King, then hosted Mill Creek last Friday and prevailed 27-14. Grayson, Thomas County Central 29-35 (L) Archer 55-0 (W) on the road for all three of its contests, opened with a 31-0 shutout of North Forsyth, edged North Gwinnett 23-19, and most recently blanked Valdosta 22-0. Westlake 43-27 (W) Berkmar 58-13 (W) For a while it looked like Colquitt County might not even qualify for the playoffs. The Warner Robins 35-14 (W) Shiloh 48-0 (W) Packers dropped their first three games of the season to Cook County, South Panola (MS), and Carver 34-31 (W) Dacula 16-10 (W) Thomas County Central. They went 2-2 in Region 1-AAAAA but tested Valdosta in a 36-29 loss to end the regular season. From there, Colquitt County has not looked back. The offense, Tift County 63-28 (W) Parkview 28-13 (W) led by quarterback Tyler Brown, running back Tevin King, and receiver Tommy Hudson, is as Lowndes 27-37 (L) South Gwinnett 22-24 (L) good as there is in Georgia. Coffee 38-27 (W) Brookwood 0-10 (L) Grayson lost its opener to Kell and suffered a pair of setbacks in October, but the Rams are peaking at the right time. Their two playoff shutouts give them four on the season and Valdosta 29-36 (L) Central Gwinnett 38-18 (W) they have allowed more than 20 points only once in 13 games. This semifinal will feature an Jenkins 50-21 (W) North Forsyth 31-0 (W) intriguing clash between Colquitt’s offense and Grayson’s defense. The Rams forced Valdosta King 48-47 (W) North Gwinnett 23-19 (W) into six turnovers and will look for more of the same against a Packers offense that gave it away five times against Mill Creek. Mill Creek 27-14 (W) Valdosta 22-0 (W)

Collins Hill at Brookwood Collins Hill Brookwood Opponent Score Opponent Score rookwood is the lone remaining No. 1 seed in Class 5A and the Broncos are set to host Roswell 13-9 (W) Walton 27-10 (W) BCollins Hill in an all-Gwinnett semifinal showdown. The game is a rematch of a regular- season clash on Sept. 3, which Brookwood won 45-38. While they boast a 12-1 record, the Brookwood 38-45 (L) Collins Hill 45-38 (W) Broncos have not taken an easy route to the last four victories. After beating Alpharetta 44-13 King 36-43 (L) Dacula 14-24 (L) in round one, Brookwood then got past Norcross 34-24 and won a back-and-forth shootout over North Gwinnett 20-33 (L) Archer 37-0 (W) Hillgrove 45-35. The team’s only loss of the season came at the hands of Region 8-AAAAA rival Dacula 24-14 way back on Sept. 10. Duluth 49-14 (W) Central Gwinnett 59-13 (W) Collins Hill, the No. 2 seed out of Region 7-AAAAA, is also in the midst of a huge Peachtree Ridge 14-10 (W) South Gwinnett 42-21 (W) winning streak. The Eagles found themselves at 1-3 after consecutive losses to Brookwood, M.L. King and North Gwinnett, but they have now won nine in a row. Collins Hill booked its Mill Creek 42-34 (W) Shiloh 44-0 (W) spot in the semifinals with close victories over Woodstock (7-3), Roswell (35-24) and Lowndes Mountain View 24-0 (W) Parkview 10-3 (W) (31-28 in ), the last two of which came on the road. Norcross 42-0 (W) Grayson 10-0 (W) If their previous meeting and recent playoff games are any indication, another offen- sive eruption could be in the cards. Brookwood’s high-powered attack is led by quarterback Ben Meadowcreek 36-0 (W) Berkmar 45-20 (W) McLane and running back Nick Tompkins, while kicker Erick Yang has been clutch in the post- Woodstock 7-3 (W) Alpharetta 44-13 (W) season. The Broncos, though, will have to take care of the football after committing seven turn- Roswell 35-24 (W) Norcross 34-24 (W) overs against Hillgrove. For Collins Hill, quarterback Taylor Heinicke is the all-time leading passer in Gwinnett County and he overwhelmed Lowndes with 395 yards and three touchdowns. Lowndes 31-28 (W) Hillgrove 45-35 (W)

After all, Kthe favorites don’t know all too much about close games. They beat Buford 14-0 early in Spencer 63-0 (W) Dalton 27-14 (W) the season, and have been rolling ever since. In one of the most dominant seasons in any clas- Buford 14-0 (W) Armuchee 49-13 (W) sifications Dell McGee’s bunch is scoring an incredible 37 points per game and is giving up just Hardaway 44-0 (W) Pepperell 35-0 (W) four per game for their opponents. A big reason for their success is superstar running back Isaiah Crowell. The big-time recruit LaGrange 21-3 (W) Chattooga 40-0 (W) rushed for close to 2,000 yards in his junior season, and has been even better this time around. Just look Heard County 34-6 (W) Sonoraville 42-8 (W) at his performance against Thomasville last week, when he rushed for 314 yards and five touchdowns. Manchester 39-6 (W) North Murray 54-7 (W) The Tigers do it in the run game, but Kris Carson is also a reliable force under center. Then there’s that stout defense, which features a terrifying cornerback tandem in Deion Bonner Callaway 39-17 (W) Gordon Central 44-6 (W) and Riyadh Jones. Kendrick 47-0 (W) Dade County 43-8 (W) While their opponents excel on the ground, Calhoun can do big things in the air. Check out last week’s win over Fitzgerald, when J.T. But they also have great balance offensively thanks to preseason all-state performer Temple 41-8 (W) Rockmart 35-8 (W) Dustin Christian, a talent with speed similar to Crowell’s. Pepperell 35-0 (W) Manchester 44-8 (W) You don’t get this far without a strong defense, and Calhoun is no exception, with junior tackling machine Alex Kirby leading a stout front seven at . Greater Atlanta Christian 21-7 (W) Westminster 36-19 (W) Don’t expect the Jackets to be intimidated by Crowell and company. They’ve been Thomasville 41-14 (W) Fitzgerald 31-13 (W) here before, as they were state runners-up in 2009. Lovett at Buford lovett buford Opponent Score Opponent Score

Hart County 52-22 (W) The Lions will look to control the clock with their running game. Zach Boden rushed for 135 Elbert County 27-20 (W) yards in a first-round win, and then ran for an astounding 239 yards and three scores in a quarterfinal Dade County 42-6 (W) Callaway 52-14 (W) win against Brooks Co. He was a big reason for last week’s win, as starting quarterback Hunter Budd Brooks County 35-18 (W) Cook 21-14 (W) was not active. Clinch County improved to 13-0 and earned a spot in the semifinals with a 34-27 comeback win over ELCA last week Brantley County 48-27 (W) Southwest 14-7 (W) thanks to two fourth-quarter touchdowns from Anthony McNeil. Last season, McNeil was the Wilcox County 33-14 (W) Whitefield Academy 33-7 (W) Cougars’ leading rusher and he has teamed with Tray Dorsey to form a potent one-two punch Bacon County 51-7 (W) Dougherty 19-21 (L) out of the offensive backfield. Before the season is over, Whipple likely will post Atkinson County 63-0 (W) Warren County 35-20 (W) 2,000 yards passing and 30 scores through the air. He’ll have the support of Tevin Underwood Charlton County 33-7 (W) Lincoln County 26-14 (W) at tailback, Alvin Dupree at tight end and Devontaye Drayton at wideout. Drayton has had Greenville 34-6 (W) Holy Innocents’ 34-30 (W) some problems with drops this year but he was solid in the quarterfinals against ECI, hauling in one score and securing a two-point conversion.
