This strategic geographical situation is one of the main reasons why it has become a multinational metropolis. Today, it is one of the most populated cities in China, with a permanent resident population of over 23 million. It looks gigantic, but only represents about 1.1% of the Chinese population. Its Chinese name, 上海,means « on the sea », although the city center is about 90 miles from the sea. The city is separated in two by the Huangpu River. On the east bank, Pudong, the new fnancial and residential area of Shanghai. On the west bank, Puxi, the old part of Shanghai, where the time of the foreign concessions can still be seen in many places. This mix of new and old, modern and traditional, Chinese and western, is what makes Shanghai an amazing city to live in. 1990 now The history of Shanghai is actually quite short. For a long time, it was only considered a simple fshing village and was of no interest to anyone. One of the moments of its history happened in 1842. After losing the Opium wars to the british, China had to open fve ports to foreign trade and Shanghai was one of them. 4 | Route2China Welcome Guide Shanghai history From this moment on, Shanghai’s international side has always been present and the city has developed into the huge city it is today. A couple years after, the frst expatriates arrived in the city, which had been divided in 3 diferent zones : The international concession, the French Concession, and the Chinese old town. In those concessions, the foreigners were controlling everything from police to administration. Moreoever, only the laws of their country were applicable to them, not the Chinese law. In 1900, the city’s population amounted 1 million, among which 350’000 were foreigners. Those years were the one of the untamed Shanghai, it was like all the world agreed to gather here to never sleep. At night, casinos and cabarets were opening their doors to the many foreigners that had just arrived after some months on the sea. From 1949, Shanghai was under communist authority. All foreigners had left and it was said the most « red » city in the country. From that time until the late 70s, the city has known tough periods, just like the rest of the country. When in 1978, Deng Xiaoping came into power and opened China to the west again, Shanghai started its rise again. Since 1990, everything accelerated... 5 | Route2China Welcome Guide Shanghai Metro Map Shanghai Metro Map 6 | Route2China Welcome Guide Mandarin survival Mandarin survival Thank you! (xiè xie) 谢谢!
