The District is bounded by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. • The South Eastern boundary is flanked by Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala State. • The District lies between 8o 03' and 8o 35' N Latitude, 77o 15' and 77o 36' E Longitude and has an areal extent of 1684 sq.km. • There are 9 Blocks, 95 Villages and 1384 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The major river in the district is Kuzhithuraiar. • This river has got two major distributaries namely Kodayar and Paralayar. There are many tributaries for Kodayar River and among them are Chittar I and Chittar II rivers. • The origin of Kodayar River is Western Ghats and the river confluences with Arabian Sea near Thengaipattanam, at a distance of about 56 Km. west of Cape Comorian, the southernmost tip of India. • Valliar, another small river and its tributary Thoovalar, originates from Velimalai Hills, and confluences with Arabian Sea near Manavalakurichi. Pazhayar is another small river draining the district.     Preface India is the largest peninsula in the world with a coastline of about 7517 km with 12 major ports and 185 non major / intermediate ports with a very impressive water network consisting of rivers, lakes, creeks and canals. An efficient transport sector is vital for development of the economy to stimulate optimum competitive business environment. Indian transport system comprises various modes, viz. Railways, Roadways, Inland Waterways, Coastal Shipping and Airways. Integrated development of waterways can generate waterway grid that may in future help shift cargo traffic from road transport to the cheaper and eco-friendly inland waterways. The first national waterways were established in India in mid 1980s & 1993 with a combined length of 2,716 km: NW 1 (1620 km): Ganga - Bhagirathi- Hooghly river system between Haldia & Allahabad declared as National waterway in 1986 NW 2 (891 Km): Brahmaputra River between Bangladesh Border and Sadiya declared as National waterway in 1988 NW 3 (205 km): West coast canal (168 km) – Udyog mandal canal (23 km) - Champakara canal (14 km) declared as National waterway in 1993 The government also declared the following two inland waterways as national waterways during 2008: NW 4 (1095 km): Kakinada-Pondicherry canal - Godavari and Krishna rivers NW 5 (623 km): East Coast Canal - Brahmani River and Mahanadi delta Given the untapped potential of India’s inland waterways, the Govt. of India desires to explore the commercial navigation potential on year round basis. Ministry of Shipping (MoS), Govt. of India has directed Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to identify the viable waterways in India for their phased development.

Ay kings who ruled between 4th century BC and 9th century A.D showed interests in developing the irrigation systems. The ancient Tamils found a good system of distribution management of Water.The Rivers are the back bones of irrigation in kanyakumari district. During early period tanks were created with a clear idea to meet the needs of the people The earlier irrigation systems were well planned aiming at the welfare and benefit of the people . The irrigation system that was developed during the early period in kanyakumari district is still continuing and helping the people. Key words - irrigation system, rivers, tanks, welfare and benefit. 1. INTRODUCTION Kanyakumari district differs from the rest of Tamil Nadu with regard to its physical features and all other aspects, such as people and culture. The normal rainfall is more than forty inches a year. Kanyakuamri District presents a striking contrast to the neighbouring Tirunelveli and Kerala state in point of physical features and agricultural conditions. The North eastern part of the district is filled with hills and mountains. The Aralvaimozhi hills and the Aralvaimozhi pass are historically important( Gopalakrishnan, 1995,).The fort at the top of the hill was built by the ancient kings to defend the Ay kingdom. Marunthuvalmalai or the medicinal hill is referred in the epic of Ramayana.

Approximately 88% of diarrheal diseases are attributed to unsafe water supply, inadequate sanitation and hygiene. Proper knowledge about diarrhea and its prevention is essential for the people to practice adequate control measures. Proper water usage and handling practice also play an important role in control of diarrheal / water borne diseases. Objectives: to assess 1) knowledge and practice regarding diarrheal diseases and 2) the drinking water practices among the population of Arumanai panchayat of Kanyakumari district in South India. Material & Methods: A cross sectional study was done among households of Arumanai panchayat of Kanyakumari district between September and November 2015. 150 households that have been residing in the area for > 6 months were included. Data was collected using a pretested semi- structured questionnaire Results: Among the respondents, 26.7% (40) believed microorganisms to be a cause of diarrhea, while88% believed that boiling renders the water safe for drinking purposes.
