Yesterday, several people sent the newspaper notices they had received via WhatsApp suppos- edly from the government. The notice claimed to be from the ministry of health and offered guidance on what to do if you suspect that you have the coron- avirus. It then exhorted people to republish this no- tice and said that if you “did not publish it, I know that you are a partner in killing your own people...greetings from the Ministry of Health.” Aside from the terrible grammar, the message highlights the vast amounts of fake news pretending to be official notices that people are bombarded with daily. Social media and messaging apps like WhatsApp have helped in myriad ways to keep us all connected. They provide a wide range of social benefits and have made the isolation of ‘staying at home’ more bearable. But they also serve as a conduit for the worst of human impulses. Rather like a virus themselves, fake news items spread among the population, and the more sensational, the more outrageous, the more racist or hate mongering, the more likely they are to spread. It’s almost impossible to resist the urge to pass these videos, texts and messages on to oth- ers - even if you can’t confirm their legitimacy. We can do the same; we must listen to in- structions word by word. We were told to maintain social distancing, we were told to keep a distance between each other in line, we were told to frequently wash our hands with water and soap, we were told to use sanitizers and we were told to stay home and not leave unless absolutely necessary, which is the most important factor to stop the spread of the virus. But we did not listen until the government took strict measures related to activities during the day and a curfew from sunset to sunrise. Though the curfew proved effective, there is something that takes place just before the curfew goes into effect - laborers rushing out of their workplaces at around 4:00 pm to get to their transport vehicles and return home before 5:00 pm. The crowds are very close to each other without any caution. So please, let there be more awareness campaigns about what should be done in these vulnerable areas, because it seems that efforts by many government departments in various languages did not reach the target audience. Many voluntary teams can take over this duty, as we see them doing organi- zational work in co-ops and other places, so we can have more control over the situation and minimize the chance of contracting the highly contagious virus. Authorities in Kuwait took and are taking admirable action to keep the virus in check locally, so let us help each other by following instructions and heed warnings. “Look for something positive in each day, even if some days you have to look a little harder.” (Anon) InternationalEstablished 1961 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 2020 Australian govt enacts sweeping grants migrants residency during pandemic lockdown powers Page 8 Page 8

PARIS: Hunkered down with his parents in Nor- mandy, Renault driver Esteban Ocon is racking up the hours on a Formula One virtual simulator to be ready when the season finally gets underway. The 23-year-old is preparing for his first campaign with Renault after spending last year as a Mercedes reserve driver following a successful two-season stint racing for Force India. “My days are full and I behave as if I was going to race next week,” the Frenchman told AFP. “I do a lot of racing on the simulator, and a great deal of sport. “Nobody knows when the season will start, and as we have all the time we need now it’s easy to keep in top shape.” The 2020 Formula One season has been thrown into disarray by the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed over 33,000 lives worldwide ac- cording to an AFP tally. So far, Grand Prix races scheduled for Bahrain, Vietnam, China, the Netherlands, Spain and Azerbai- jan have been postponed while the iconic Riviera showpiece in Monaco and the season-opening Aus- tralian race were cancelled. “It will restart when it restarts, once things are safe,” Ocon said. “The winter break should have been over a long time ago, and with everything that’s going on, we’re glued to the news every evening, we see the figures rising and the tough times the world is going through. “We just hope this will soon be over.” France has been under lockdown since March 17, with Ocon spending his time on a simulator also being used by fellow F1 drivers Lando Norris and Max Verstappen. “It keeps you up to speed facing off with good drivers. It keeps your reflexes primed,” he said. “I’m LEBANONAT: Matthias Appenzeller dives from the 27-meter platform in Lebanonat the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. hoping it will give me an edge, that when we get back — Photo taken from www.redbullcontentpool.com I’ll be more ready.
