UDK: 314.743(436)-05 Pavelić, A.''1945/1946'' Izvorni znanstveni članak Received: September 5, 2011 Accepted: November 7, 2011 ON THE CONCEALMENT OF ANTE PAVELIĆ IN AUSTRIA IN 1945-1946 Ante DELIĆ* Based on available American and British documents and thus-far unconsulted papers left behind by Ante Pavelić, the leader of the Independent State of Croatia, the author analyzes Pavelić’s concealment in Austria and the role of Western agencies therein. Some of the relevant literature indicates that the Catholic Church and Western agencies took part in Pavelić’s concealment. The author concludes that all such conjecture lacks any foundation in the available sources. Key words: Ante Pavelić, Western allies, extradition, Yugoslavia Historiography is generally familiar with the fate of the army of the Inde- pendent State of Croatia and the civilian population which, at the end of the war in early May 1945, withdrew toward Austria in fear of advancing commu- nist forces, with the aim of surrendering to the Allies. These people were ex- tradited to the Yugoslav army with the explanation that they would be treated in compliance with the international laws of war. As it transpired, this “treat- ment” was one of the most tragic episodes in the history of the Croatian nation, known under the terms Bleiburg and the Way of the Cross.1 A portion of these refugees who managed to elude this fate ended up in Allied refugee camps, mostly in Italy, Austria and Germany.2 However, even in these camps, besides * Ante Delić, MA, University of Zadar, Zadar, Republic of Croatia 1 Cf. -

Izvorni znanstveni rad «Akcija Crkveni Bok» Uradu se govori o pravoslavnome mjestu Crkveni Bok nedaleko od Sunje koje je pretrpjelo ustake zloèine nakon to je ustaka vlast bezuspjeno pokuavala nasilnim putem uspostaviti Hrvatsku pravoslavnu crkvu. U akciji èiæenja Crkvenog Boka, pod tobonjom izlikom da se u njemu nalaze partizani, sudjelovali su i neki katolièki sveæenici. Kljuène rijeèi: Crkveni Bok, Banovina, NDH, pravoslavno stanovnitvo, zloèini. Crkveni Bok je mjesto nedaleko od Sunje, na obali rijeke Save, na putu izmeðu Siska i Jasenovca. Uz Ivanjski Bok i Stremen, to je jedno od rijetkih sela na Banovini koje se nalazi uz desnu obalu Save. Naselje je osnovano u vrijeme Vojne krajine, a oduvijek je bilo izolirano. Najblie veæe mjesto je Sunja koja se nalazi 22 kilometra prema jugozapadu. Osnivanjem sela u 18. stoljeæu rukovodio je parohijalni sveæenik Stojan Toroman. Sva su tri naselja bila pravoslavna. Stanov- nici su bili izravni potomci doseljenika iz Podkozarja. Sva tri naselja doivjela su od tridesetih godina 20. stoljeæa do poèetka 21. stoljeæa dramatièan pad broja stanovnika. Crkveni Bok je prije Drugoga svjetskog rata imao (prema popisu iz 1931.) 1107 stanovnika. Poslije rata taj je broj pao na 700 i od tada je neprekidno u padu. Prema popisu 2001., mjesto je imalo samo 213 stanovnika. Prije Domovinskog rata 1991., u njemu je ivjelo 406 stanovnika, od toga 387 Srba. Ivanjski Bok je prije Drugoga svjetskog rata imao 514 sta- novnika, a nakon rata ih je ostalo 340. -

The Ohio State University 2003 Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. Eve Levin, Advisor Dr. Geoffrey Parker Advisor Dr. David Hoffmann Department of History Dr. Nicholas Breyfogle ABSTRACT The conquest of the Khanate of Kazan’ was a pivotal event in the development of Muscovy. Moscow gained possession over a previously independent political entity with a multiethnic and multiconfessional populace. The Muscovite political system adapted to the unique circumstances of its expanding frontier and prepared for the continuing expansion to its east through Siberia and to the south down to the Caspian port city of Astrakhan. Muscovy’s government attempted to incorporate quickly its new land and peoples within the preexisting structures of the state. Though Muscovy had been multiethnic from its origins, the Middle Volga Region introduced a sizeable Muslim population for the first time, an event of great import following the Muslim conquest of Constantinople in the previous century. Kazan’s social composition paralleled Moscow’s; the city and its environs contained elites, peasants, and slaves. While the Muslim elite quickly converted to Russian Orthodoxy to preserve their social status, much of the local population did not, leaving Moscow’s frontier populated with animists and Muslims, who had stronger cultural connections to their nomadic neighbors than their Orthodox rulers. The state had two major goals for the Middle Volga Region. -

From Acceptance to Animosity: Trajectories of Croatian Jesuit Historiography Brnardic, Teodora Shek Teodora Shek Brnardić [email protected] Last modified: March 2018 Introduction The emergence of a Croatian historiography of the Society of Jesus took place in the often virulently anti-Jesuit and anti-clerical atmosphere that was prevalent in Croatia in the second half of the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. This period represented a historical crisis for the Jesuit order in Croatia, one that provoked controversies that were largely absent in the pre-suppression period, unlike in many other countries where such disputes had existed ever since the sixteenth century. In 1932, Miroslav Vanino, S.J. (1879–1965) launched a scholarly journal entitled Vrela i prinosi: Zbornik za povijest isusovačkog reda u hrvatskim krajevima (Sources and contributions: Collected papers on the history of the Jesuit order in the Croatian lands),1 which marked a turning point in the creation of a Croatian Jesuit historiography. In doing so, Vanino intended to revise the prevailing view of the pre-suppression Jesuits, who were often accused of behaving in an “anti-national” way. This latter view had become widespread among the educated Croatian elite, particularly during the Austro-Hungarian fin-de-siècle. Vanino’s journal accordingly sought to correct this politically biased interpretation of the Jesuits’ role in Croatian history with articles written by both Jesuit and non-Jesuit contributors.2 The journal would provide the foundation for a source-based, critical history of the Society of Jesus in the Croatian lands and of its relations with the Croats. -

He wrote a book on the Russian Orthodox Church in Danish in 1950, and one entitled Theological Study in the Russian and Bulgarian Orthodox Churches under Communist Rule (London : The Faith Press, 1963). In addition he has written a few articles on Romanian , Russian , and Bulgarian Orthodox Churches in the Journal of Ecumenical Studies as well as articles in Diakonia. Review of Croatian History 13/2017, no. 1, 229 - 275 Mario Jareb, Mediji i promidžba u Nezavisnoj Državi Hrvatskoj [Media and Propaganda in the Independent State of Croatia] (Zagreb: Hrvatski institut za povijest, 2016) Summary The Independent State of Croatia (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska – NDH) belonged to the Axis “New Europe”, and on its soil various German and Italian institutions, as well as military forces, were strongly present. It is, therefore, not unusual that its internal structure rested on similar settings. Ruling Usta- sha Movement led by Ante Pavelić sought to transform Croatia into a totalitarian state by implementing solutions that had been previously developed by National Socialism in Germany and Fascism in Italy. To- talitarian movements and regimes in general treated media and propa- ganda as a powerful weapon to pro- mote their ideological and political goals and to win supporters and faithful followers. So most of them invested a lot of energy and substan- tial funds in the building and opera- tion of powerful media and propaganda systems. The NDH authorities looked similar- ly on media and propaganda, and it is precisely the NDH to be considered as the first state formation on Croatian soil which devoted considerable attention to them. That state attempted to build a special system under state control and supervision of the ruling Ustasha Movement. The key element of the policy within that system was the strengthening and building of media to turn them into a powerful and effective media and propaganda machine. Its task was the promotion of ideas and goals of the govern- ment and ruling Ustasha Movement, as well as the suppression of any hostile action. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE UDK Izvorni znanstveni rad RELIGION AND CHURCH IN THE USTASHA IDEOLOGY (1941-1945) Irina OGNYANOVA The article deals with the problem regarding the position of religion and Church in the Ustasha ideological system, which is insuffi ciently explored in contemporary historiography. Between Catholicism and the Croatian nationalism existed a strong historical connection. It was expli- citly expressed in the extreme forms of the Croatian nationalism, such as in the Ustashas mo- vement. Nationalism and Catholicism were not only two basic, but also closely tied ideas in- corporated in their ideological system. This topic is partially elaborated in historiography, but still there is no a single monograph dedicated to it. Particularly disputable problems in histo- rical literature are also those about the role of the Catholic Church in the Independent State of Croatia (ISC) and its relationship towards Ustashas’ nationalism, and those about relationship between Vatican and the Croatian authorities in the period between 1941 and 1945. The Role of Religion in the Croatian Nationalism – mid 19th – mid 20th Centuries The Croatian nationalism of the nineteenth century was civil (laic) by character. It deter- mined the Croatian nation on the basis of ethnos, language, state territory, history, cul- ture, etc. and it was similar to the classic European nationalism from the period1. The fi rst Croatian national ideology, so-called ilirizam in the 1830s was a prototype of the Yugoslavism.
