Jang Ilsoon's Socio-Religious Thought and Its Relevance
JANG ILSOON’S SOCIO-RELIGIOUS THOUGHT AND ITS RELEVANCE FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN SOUTH KOREA BY HYOMIN BAEK A thesis is submitted to the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Lancaster University 2017 I, ____________________________, declare that this thesis has been composed solely by myself and that it has not been submitted, in whole or in part, in any previous application for a degree. Except where states otherwise by reference or acknowledgment, the work presented is entirely my own. Signed: ____________________________________ Date: ____________________________________ ABSTRACT Religious individuals and communities have been at the heart of civil society and played a crucial role in the social and historical sphere of twentieth-century Korea. In particular, the Catholic Church in Korea had been widely credited for its dedication to justice for the weak and to democracy. However, it is undeniable that the Catholic Church in South Korea has lost its social influence. Indeed, over the past decade there has been a significant drop in the number of Catholics and the Church, once a pillar of civil society, has continuously lost its social position. While there are various possible explanations for this circumstance, a satisfactory one can be found in its recent past history. During the 1970s and 1980s the Church was the symbol of social and political resistance, and there was a lay leader and activist, who played a significant background role. Admittedly, Jang Ilsoon (1924-1994) is a little-known figure and thinker within Christian communities in contemporary Korea, but his teachings are far more influential among non-believers than Catholics regardless of their faith and political stance. -
Neo Geography Ii
NEO GEOGRAPHY II Yuri An / Chloé Delarue / Hwayeon Nam / Jeehee Park / Tatiana Rihs / Matthias Sohr An exhibition curated by Kyung Roh Bannwart / Adeena Mey Text intervention: Martin Widmer Venue: Post Territory Ujeongguk, Seoul Opening: Friday, 3 November, 2017, 6pm Conferences by Seunghan Paek / Mijeong Lee: Saturday, 4 November, 2017, 2pm Neo Geography is an international exchange project bringing together six new works by Swiss and Korean artists. Inspired by the modernist architectural thinking of Switzerland and Korea, participating artists successively exhibit in two different institutions whose intents as alternative art spaces resemble each other but whose identities and histories differ. Its first chapter Neo Geography I took place at the CAN / Centre d’Art Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in September 2017. Fostered by the same spirit of hybridisation, the exhibition takes a new form in Seoul, entitled Neo Geography II at Post Territory Ujeongguk. Neo Geography revolves around the issue of the circulation of concepts of «space», more precisely its uses and the dynamics of appropriations between Switzerland and Korea. The artists were invited to respond to the research topic - namely a specific case of intellectual exchange between the two countries - and to produce new works. Indeed, Neo Geography departed form the writings of the modernist critic of Korean architecture Young Bae Ahn. Writing on the concept of space in the 1960s, his way of thinking about the relationships between spatiality in traditional Korean architecture and the production of a mobile «anxious subject » has been brought close to the work of Swiss theorist of architecture Sigfried Giedion. This conceptual filiation is observable, most notably, in their common approach to architecture and its visualization through meticulous photographic montages that can be described as «cinematic». -

Diversity of K-Pop: a Focus on Race, Language, and Musical Genre
DIVERSITY OF K-POP: A FOCUS ON RACE, LANGUAGE, AND MUSICAL GENRE Wonseok Lee A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2018 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Esther Clinton Kristen Rudisill © 2018 Wonseok Lee All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Since the end of the 1990s, Korean popular culture, known as Hallyu, has spread to the world. As the most significant part of Hallyu, Korean popular music, K-pop, captivates global audiences. From a typical K-pop artist, Psy, to a recent sensation of global popular music, BTS, K-pop enthusiasts all around the world prove that K-pop is an ongoing global cultural flow. Despite the fact that the term K-pop explicitly indicates a certain ethnicity and language, as K- pop expanded and became influential to the world, it developed distinct features that did not exist in it before. This thesis examines these distinct features of K-pop focusing on race, language, and musical genre: it reveals how K-pop groups today consist of non-Korean musicians, what makes K-pop groups consisting of all Korean musicians sing in non-Korean languages, what kind of diverse musical genres exists in the K-pop field with two case studies, and what these features mean in terms of the discourse of K-pop today. By looking at the diversity of K-pop, I emphasize that K-pop is not merely a dance- oriented musical genre sung by Koreans in the Korean language. -
