WEIGHT CATEGORIES MEN WOMEN • -58kg • -49kg • -68kg • -57kg • -80kg • -67kg • +80kg • +67kg There are 16 athletes competing in each weight category, except for Women -49kg, Women -57kg and Men -68kg, where 17 athletes compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Each weight category consists of a single elimination tournament. For the categories with 17 athletes, a qualification contest will take place before the round of 16. The winner of the final contest will be awarded the gold medal and the loser will be awarded the silver medal. The contestants from each pool who lost to the finalists in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals will meet in the repechage rounds. The winners advance to the bronze medal contests, the losers are eliminated. If the winner of the qualification contest advances to the finals, there is an additional repechage contest between the loser of the qualification match and the loser of the round of 16. The winner of this contest competes with the loser of the quarterfinal. The losers from the semifinals advance directly to the bronze medal contests, where they will compete against the winner of the repechage round from the opposite pool. The winners will each be awarded a bronze medal. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE WT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES There are fewer weight categories in the Olympic Games than the World Taekwondo (WT) World Championships (four instead of eight for both men and women). There is only one court for the Games instead of multiple courts at the WT World Championships. Two bronze medals are awarded to losers of semifinals at the WT World Championships. At the Olympic Games, a double repechage competition format is applied in order to determine the winners of the two bronze medals. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES • A weigh-in for randomly selected athletes will take place one hour before the competition, in addition to the general weigh-in the day before the competition. • Coaches are given one appeal per contest to call for an instant video replay (IVR). • 4D Replay system will be used for IVR. • The golden point round has been renamed the golden round. Contestants are now required to score two points in the golden round to win. • The golden round has a duration of one minute • For an effective turning attack to the trunk and head, a contestant can be awarded an additional two points. • The valid turning kick to the trunk protector is now four points and valid turning kick to the head is now five points • "Kyong- go" penalties have been removed from the rules. Only "gam-jeom" is a valid penalty. • A "gam-jeom" can now be issued if a contestant has one foot outside of the boundary line and referees will now only wait for five seconds before issuing a "gam-jeom" to contestants who are not engaged in the fight. Using an alternative foot technique will also result in a "gam-jeom". • With the exception of semifinals and medal contests, a contest can be ended with a gap of up to 20 points TKW -------------------------- --_02A Page 1 of 4 Report Created THU 1 JUL 2021 09:30 Makuhari Messe Hall A Taekwondo 幕張メッセ A ホール テコンドー / Taekwondo Makuhari Messe Hall A SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES Competition method Contests are conducted in a delimited competition area surfaced with matting, which should be installed on a raised podium. The contestants, "chung" (blue) and "hong" (red) compete against each other using punching and kicking techniques performed on permitted parts of the body. Punches to the face and hits below the lower abdomen are forbidden. Permitted parts of the body are covered with protection. Contest Each contest consists of three rounds of two minutes for both men and women, each with one-minute intervals between rounds. In the case of a tied score after the completion of the third round, a fourth round of one minute will be conducted known as the golden round, after a one-minute rest period following the third round. The first contestant that scores two points in the golden round is the winner. Scoring format Points • One referee, three judges, a review jury and a technical assistant manage the contest. • The trunk and head PSS register the kicks automatically. The judges add the technical points (turning techniques). Punches are recorded by the judges. • For an effective attack to the trunk a contestant is awarded one, two or four points, and for an effective attack to the head a contestant is awarded three or five points. • The Central Referee cannot award points. Penalties • There is one type of penalty: One "gam-jeom" leads to the deduction of one point (actually one point is awarded to his opponent). During a contest, if a contestant accumulates 10 penalty deduction points then the contest is stopped, and his opponent is declared the winner by the referee. Score • Contest scores are the sum of the points scored in three rounds. Points and penalties are displayed on electronic scoreboards positioned on the field of play. Tie Break rules In the case of a tied score after the completion of the third round, a fourth round of one minute, also known as the golden round, will be conducted after a one-minute rest following the third round. In principle, all scores awarded during the first three rounds shall be void. The first contestant that scores two or more points in the golden round shall be declared the winner. However, in the event of a tied score after the end of the golden round, the winner shall be decided on the basis of superiority based the following criteria: • The contestant who received a point by a punch in the golden round. • If neither contestant received a point by a punch, or if both contestants received a point by a punch in the golden round, the contestant who achieved a higher number of hits registered by the PSS during the golden round.

2 Welcome from the President Dear Colleagues of the Media, For the world’s greatest athletes, the Olympics Games is the pinnacle of their dreams. However, the Olympic dream also lives in the hearts of people all around the world. This is a dream that inspires men and women, young and old, from every culture and religion towards excellence, and proves that the capacity of the human spirit is limitless. Taekwondo is a perfect example of how sport benefits society, propelling individuals towards a life of excellence. Since its debut at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, taekwondo has been transformed into one of the most popular sports in the world. With seventy million practitioners worldwide and two hundred and two member nations actively participating in WTF sanctioned events, taekwondo is flourishing in countries where other major sports struggle to take root. It also serves as a platform for nations who may struggle to shine in other sports to achieve their Olympic hopes and dreams. The passion that sport brings to the lives of Olympians has an impact on the world around them. It is crucial that their dreams are not tarnished so that they may spread the values of Olympism to their communities and nations. It is for this reason that the WTF has done its utmost to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic Games are as fair and transparent as possible, by introducing instant video replay and the electronic protector scoring system (PSS). Furthermore, the referees here in London have gone through extensive and intensive training to remove any possibility of human error.

  • WTF Taekwondo Kravanalys -I Ett Olympiskt Medaljperspektiv
