TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE WaShINGToN

AS the White House, Congress and the Federal Reserve struggle to stem the growing financial and economic crisis, the likelihood of success may ultimately come down to one factor: the American consumer. What’s largely behind the mount- ing recession fears and wild gyrations of financial markets is the fact that what drives the US economy is not new investment by corporations, not tax cuts or big new federal spending programs, but millions of ordinary Americans buying new cars, cruising the malls and upgrading to bigger TV sets. Fully 70 percent of the Ameri- can economy consists of consumer spending, which has held up remark- ably strong in the current record- breaking expansion that followed the Great Recession more than a decade ago. Even though wages and incomes have been stagnant for many house- holds, they have continued to spend. But the coronavirus strikes a blow at that long-running source of economic strength. he Ministry of Municipality and Environ- ment, represented by the Nature Reserves Tand Wildlife Department, recently organised a campaign to clean up the coral reefs along the Sealine Beach. The campaign, titled ‘Together we care for our coral reefs’, saw the participation of some 50 divers from a number of agencies and institutions in the country, including the Lekhwiya Force, Alghais Div- ing and the Rural Tech, as well as a host of volunteer divers. The MME’s campaign for cleaning the coral reefs at the Sealine Beach started in 2009. The pro- cess helps rapid growth of the coral reefs, accord- ing to an official from the MME. He added that the ministry is making every effort to preserve coral reefs as part of its initiative to protect the seabed of Qatar from pollutants that lead to the de- terioration of marine life, including coral reefs.
