WWE Survivor Series: Predictions and Preview WWE Survivor Series: Predictions and Preview Author : Robert D. Cobb After NXT Takeover happens on Saturday night, WWE will have the 29th Survivor Series take place in Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It WWE's first time back in Canada for a pay-per-view since Breaking Point in 2009. Since WWE started doing pay-per-views in the 1980's, there has been quite a few that were held in Canada. Some of which included Wrestlemania, Summerslam, Survivor Series, No Way Out, and several of the In Your House PPVs that WWE ran in the 1980s and 1990s. [embedit snippet="jon-ads"] It is the second time that Survivor Series is being held in Canada as the last time they were up north was in 1997 for Survivor Series that saw the infamous Montreal Screw job. But the 29th Survivor Series is expecting to be a stacked card that is being billed as Fantasy warfare just got real as Brock Lesnar is set to face Goldberg after he has been away from the professional wrestling industry for the last twelve years. Here are the matches and this is how I see the whole night playing out: The Brian Kendrick vs. Kalisto (If Kalisto wins, Smackdown Live gets the entire Cruiserweight division) Over this past summer, WWE had a Cruiserweight classic tournament that saw some of the best international talents from Zack Sabre Jr to Kota Ibushi to TJ Perkins battle out in a single elimination tournament, and the winner would end up becoming the new Cruiserweight champion. The two announcers for the tournament were Daniel Bryan and Mauro Ranallo, both affiliated with Smackdown. It seemed very likely that Smackdown was getting the cruiserweights. However, that wasn't the case. For unknown reasons, WWE decided to bring them to RAW, and since they were brought on to Raw back in September, they have not gotten over with the WWE universe as well as the hope was for them too. [embedit snippet="1"] Two reasons why I feel that Kendrick is losing this match on Sunday is that WWE recently announced that they would be having a cruiserweight show called 205 Live that will be airing live on Tuesday nights and by 1 / 4 moving them to Smackdown, you can't run the risk of them getting swallowed up. Winner: Kalisto Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown Live in a 5-on-5 Traditional Survivor Series Tag Team Elimination match (Team Raw- The New Day, Luke Gallows& Karl Anderson, seriesSheamus &Cesaro, Enzo Amore & Big Cass, and the Shining Stars.) ( Team Smackdown Live- Health Slater & Rhyno, The Hype Bros, American Alpha, The Usos, and Breezango) In the first of three traditional Survivor Series matches to see which brand is better will see the best of the tag team division from both brands. The rules of this match are similar to every other SurSeriesmatch as if one of the people get eliminated, then both members of the team need to go to the locker room. One thing that I am interested in seeing is if these teams don't have major in-fighting as many of these teams are currently in feuds. [embedit snippet="1"] I see Team Smackdown grabbing the win here as they seem to be more on the same page than Team Raw. What I am curious to see is with these 20 men in the ring is what if any seeds are planted for Wrestlemania 33. It seems that mania is still a long time away, but its still a few months away. Winner: Team Smackdown Live The Miz (w/ Maryse) vs. Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental Championship Originally, this was supposed to be Dolph Ziggler vs. Sami Zayn. But on the last episode of Smackdown, the Miz beat Dolph Ziggler with an assist from his wife, Maryse. However, I see Sami Zayn winning the IC belt on Sunday night and then being brought to Smackdown in a trade. WWE has been booking Sami to be the underdog for a while now, and I figure it his time to shine. Also, Sami Zayn is from Canada, and it would be a better touch if he does that in his home country. Winner: Sami Zayn is your new Intercontinental Championship Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown Live in a 5-on-5 Traditional Women's Elimination Match (Team Raw is Nia Jax, Alica Fox, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Charlotte) (Team Smackdown Live is Carmella, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, and Nikki Bella) Before I even get into this match, I don't understand why Natalya is not included in this match, if not for anything it's in her home country. In regards to this match, I could see WWE focusing heavily on Nia Jax. While the Smackdown team seems to be on the same page, I don't see them grabbing the win. 2 / 4 [embedit snippet="1"] The biggest one being that you have many people on the Smackdown team that don't like each other. Carmella and Nikki are in a feud, and Lynch and Bliss are in a feud. You will have a tough time to win a match when 80% of your team doesn't like each other. Winner: Team Raw Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown Live in a 5-on-5 Traditional Men's Elimination Match (Team Raw is Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Braun Strowman) (Team Smackdown Live is AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Shane McMahon, Randy Orton, and Bray Wyatt) Before I go into this match, it was announced a few weeks ago that James Ellsworth would be the mascot for Team Smackdown Live. I would also like to point out that Shane McMahon was added to the team after Baron Corbin suffered some injury and was pull from the match, per orders of the WWE medical staff. Like I mentioned how WWE would focus a lot on Nia Jax, I could easily see that being the same case with Braun Strowman. My guess is WWE will use these two matches to push Nia and Braun up the rankings In regards to this match, I am thinking that Team Raw will win after what was mentioned on the latest episode of Smackdown. Between that and from reports of what Undertaker's first feud will be heading into Royal Rumble, I suspect to see somehow AJ Styles be the one to cost his team the victory. I said this with the other Survivor Series matches, but I am curious to see these teams in action. I am also interested to see if egos will not cause more harm than good. Winner: Team Raw Brock Lesnar (w/Paul Heyman) vs. Goldberg This is the rematch from their bout that occurred at Wrestlemania 20 back in 2004. You have a wrestler in Goldberg who has not been in a professional wrestling ring since that match which was twelve years ago. This match puts WWE in a bad spot with who they have come out victorious. If you have Lesnar win, then it was a waste to bring back Goldberg, just to lose. On the flip side, if Goldberg wins then you make Lesnar look bad as he jobs to someone over 50 years old. Either way, you look at it, WWE is not in a good spot. As far as in-ring action, I think it will be bad for two reasons. Goldberg is over 50 years old and may not be able to put on a long match. On the flip side, Brock Lesnar has a few moves and is a different type of wrestler than Goldberg. Winner: Brock Lesnar Overall, I am expecting Survivor Series to be interesting, and since you have very few matches, I am either 3 / 4 expecting WWE to add to the pre-show or make these long. Also with that being said, WWE doesn't want to make these matches that long because you may lose the audience's interest. As both a popular and historically racially problematic venue, WWE’s politically incorrect programming has played an underappreciated and under examined role in representing the USA. Although 4 many different groups have been portrayed by gross stereotypes in WWE, this paper uses the family of Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson—the Samoan Dynasty—as a case study. The WWE originally presented Pacific Islanders using the most offensive stereotypes, and the first two generations of the Samoan Dynasty had to “play Indian” or cosign onto gross representations of their people to be recognized by American audiences unfamiliar with representations of Pacific Islanders.

    Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency is Hard As many of probably noticed, we have been posting late and sporadically for the last month. This was, obviously, not our intention, but with the second semester eating into my free time, staying up to date is a tall order. Even without the newsletter itself seeing weekly publication the site has still remained up to date on a weekly basis, thanks primarily to co-author Ben Carass, as well as guest writers Paul Cooke and Leslie Lee III. But, the newsletter has survived for well over 241 weeks, and will hopefully thrive in the years to come. I have attempted to make provisions for publishing related tasks which should minimize the risk of major delays (obviously there will be some regular delays, as this late issue can attest), but we have some fail safes in place in order to keep this to a minimum. With all of this said, we have a great issue for everyone this week with Paul Cooke discussing the Pro-Wrestling Only Greatest Wrestler Ever project and his personal experience with the poll, Ben covers the news including tons of results from Japan and the Lesnar USADA violation, the Mixed Bag returns with a look at comedy wrestling, Ricochet/Ospreay, and a potential WWE match of the year -- plus Ben also looks at last Sunday's Battleground show and the first RAW of the brand split (a very good show). Also, for those unaware, we now have an official Twitter account @CubedCircleWres allowing the banger to unprecedented highs at @BenCarass and @RyanClingman.

Additionally, this thesis will examine the defining characteristics of the zombie as they have changed through its history. Over the course of the last century and edging into the 21st Century, the zombie has grown in popularity in film, videogames, and more recently in novels. The zombie genre has become a self-inspiring force in pop culture media today. Films inspired a number of videogames, which in turn, supplied the film industry with a resurgence of inspirations and ideas. Combined, these media have brought the zombie to a position of greater prominence in popular literature. Additionally, within the growing zombie culture today there is an over-arcing viral theme associated with the zombie. In many films, games, and novels there is a viral cause for a zombie outbreak. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of zombies and its widening reach throughout popular culture makes the genre somewhat viral-like as well. It was the happiest time of the year – WrestleMania Weekend. – Ryan Clingman, Cubed Circle Newsletter Editor WrestleMania 31: A Classic Show? Not Really. Ryan Clingman. It seems strangely apropos that the most important piece of build on this year's Road to WrestleMania took place not in a medium governed by the pens of creative, or even exclusively by the whims of Vince McMahon, but rather through the contract negotiations between the aforementioned VKM and the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. With Mania excitement as low as it has been in years, perhaps decades the WrestleMania 31 outlook was far from positive – a reality further compounded by what seemed to be the inevitable departure of Brock Lesnar for a second run with the UFC. Whilst Creative was not remedied during the final week's build, nor may it be recovering a week on from the year's biggest show, last week's breaking news of Lesnar re-signing with the company, soon heated, at least somewhat, a build that had been fast approaching absolute zero. No longer, as in WrestleManias over the past five years, was this show's closing image predictable – the opposite was the case, in fact, as many a possibility involving Lesnar, the heel who was over like a God, Reigns, who was hated by the majority, and Seth Rollins, the Money in the Bank briefcase holder with respect from the hardcore fanbase – were possible.

    Mary Beth Haralovich Michael Trosset Department of Media Arts Department of Mathematics University of Arizona College of William and Mary 520 621-7800 757 221-2040 [email protected] [email protected] “Expect the Unexpected”: Narrative Pleasure and Uncertainty Due to Chance in Survivor In the wrap episode of Survivor’s fifth season (Survivor 5: Thailand), host Jeff Probst expressed wonder at the unpredictability of Survivor. Five people each managed to get through the game to be the sole survivor and win the million dollars, yet each winner was different from the others, in personality, in background, and in game strategy. Probst takes evident pleasure in the fact that even he cannot predict the outcomes of Survivor, as close to the action as he is. Probst advised viewers interested in improving their Survivor skills to become acquainted with mathematician John Nash’s theory of games. Probst’s evocation on national television of Nash’s game theory invites both fans and critics to apply mathematics to playing and analyzing Survivor.1 While a game-theoretic analysis of Survivor is the subject for another essay, this essay explores our understanding of narrative pleasure of Survivor through mathematical modes of inquiry. Such exploration assumes that there is something about Survivor that lends itself to mathematical analysis. That is the element of genuine, unscripted chance. It is the presence of chance and its almost irresistible invitation to try to predict outcomes that distinguishes the Survivor reality game hybrid. In The Pleasure of the Text, Roland Barthes explored how narrative whets our desire to know what happens next.2 In Survivor’s reality game, the pleasure of “what happens next” is not based on the cleverness of scriptwriters or the narrowly evident skills of the players.

Torres imposed today in U.S. District Court. Judge Torres enhanced Hatch’s sentence for obstruction of justice. The government asked for that enhancement, arguing that Hatch perjured himself during the trial and failed to disclose assets to the Probation Office. Judge Torres also ordered Hatch to pay taxes that he owes for 2000 and 2001, which the IRS has calculated at $474,971, plus interest and penalties. “In addition to punishing this defendant, this sentence should serve as a warning to others who might think of dodging their tax obligations,” U.S. Attorney Corrente said. “Paying taxes is an ordeal but it is every citizen’s obligation to pay them honestly and fully.” “Our nation’s federal tax system is not a reality show to be outwitted, it is a reality, period," said Eileen J.
