Examination of Conscience

All: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,

All strike their breast three times while saying:

through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault, therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Presider: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

All: Amen.

Psalmody

Please be seated.

Psalm 91 Safe in God’s sheltering care

I have given you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions (Luke 10:19).

Cantor: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High 2and abides in the shade of the Almighty 5says to the Lord: “My refuge, 6my stronghold, my God in whom I trust!”

People: It is he who will free you from the snare 2of the fowler who seeks to destroy you; 5God will conceal you with his pinions, 6and under his wings you will find refuge.

Cantor: You will not fear the terror of the night 2nor the arrow that flies by day, 5nor the plague that prowls in the darkness 6nor the scourge that lays waste at noon.

People: A thousand may fall at your side, 2ten thousand fall at your right, 5you, it will never approach; 6his faithful is buckler and shield.

4

Cantor: Your eyes have only to look 2to see how the wicked are repaid, 5you have said: “Lord, my refuge!” 6and have made the Most High your dwelling.

People: Upon you no evil shall fall, 2no plague approach where you dwell. 5For you, he has commanded his angels, 6to keep you in all your ways.

Cantor: They shall bear you upon their hands 2lest you strike your foot against a stone. 5On the lion and the viper you will tread 6and trample the young lion and the dragon.

People: Since he clings to me in love, I will free him; 2protect him for he knows my name. 5When he calls I shall answer: “I am with you,” 6I will save him in distress and give him glory.

Cantor: With length of days I will content him; 6I shall let him see my saving power.

All: Glory to the Father and to the Son, 2and to the Holy Spirit: 5as it was in the beginning, is now, 6and will be for ever. Amen.
