BRUCK Pontifical Academician At this commemorative Colloquium which is devoted to "Spectral Classification of the Future" it is fitting that we should speak about the life and work of the man with whom all modern spectral classification started, Father Angelo Secchi who died here in Rome a hundred years ago in February I878. At the time of his death the name of Secchi was renowned throughout the scientific world, and his early death in his 60th year came as a great shock to the whole astronomical com munity - in the same way in which the untimely death of Father Treanor in February of this year is being deplored by astronomers all over the world. Father Secchi was one of the great pioneers of astro physics, or "physical astronomy" as he used to call it, whose work ranged over the widest possible field. He made fundamental contributions to solar physics as well as to stellar spectro scopy and he also worked with considerable success in geophysics and meterology. For 28 years of his life Father Secchi was in charge of the Observatory of the Collegio Romano, the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, an observatory which he transformed into one of the world's best known and most respected scientific establishments. Secchi was an indefatigable worker. In spite of many distracting duties which were forced on him by his official position Secchi managed to publish in the course of his life some seven hundred publications in many of the leading scien tific periodicals of his time in France, Britain, Germany as well as Italy. -

The Vatican is an independent nation, with its own national astronomical observatory, the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory). As- tronomy has been supported at the Vatican since the 1582 reform of the calendar; the present-day Observatory has been in operation since 1891. The work of the observatory is divided between two sites, one in the pa- pal summer gardens south of Rome, Italy, and the other affiliated with the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Research undertaken by current staff members ranges from cosmol- ogy and the study of galactic evolution to meteoritics and meteors. Given the stable funding provided by the Vatican, the Observatory has specialized in long-term mapping and cataloguing projects that would be difficult to mount under a traditional three-year funding cycle. These have included participation in the Carte du Ciel photographic map of the sky; the at- lases of spectra produced by its Spectrochemical Laboratory; surveys of star clusters and peculiar stars; and the cataloguing of meteorite physical properties. 1. 1 THE STUDY OF SATURN'S RINGS 1610-1675, Thesis presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Field of History of Science by Albert Van Haden Department of History of Science and Technology Imperial College of Science and Teohnology University of London May, 1970 2 ABSTRACT Shortly after the publication of his Starry Messenger, Galileo observed the planet Saturn for the first time through a telescope. To his surprise he discovered that the planet does.not exhibit a single disc, as all other planets do, but rather a central disc flanked by two smaller ones. In the following years, Galileo found that Sa- turn sometimes also appears without these lateral discs, and at other times with handle-like appendages istead of round discs. These ap- pearances posed a great problem to scientists, and this problem was not solved until 1656, while the solution was not fully accepted until about 1670. This thesis traces the problem of Saturn, from its initial form- ulation, through the period of gathering information, to the final stage in which theories were proposed, ending with the acceptance of one of these theories: the ring-theory of Christiaan Huygens. Although the improvement of the telescope had great bearing on the problem of Saturn, and is dealt with to some extent, many other factors were in- volved in the solution of the problem. It was as much a perceptual problem as a technical problem of telescopes, and the mental processes that led Huygens to its solution were symptomatic of the state of science in the 1650's and would have been out of place and perhaps impossible before Descartes. -

Volume II shows illustrations of tele- scopes, projection methods and compares the optics of a telescope with that of the human eye. In volume III, observations on sunspots are illustrated. Volume IV consists two parts. The first part again deals with the phenomena of the sun, the second part is a collection of quotations from the Scriptures, Church Fathers and philosophers, all designed to prove that Schemer's interpretation of the fluid heavens conformed to Catholic doctrine. The work contains 784 pages in Latin. The text presents a rather tedious reading task as it is written in the style typical of the time. -

Astronomical discovery is usually driven by availability of technology rather than by theoretical predictions or speculation.
