  • Politics of Nawwab Gurmani
Politics of Accession in the Undivided India: A Case Study of Nawwab Mushtaq Gurmani’s Role in the Accession of the Bahawalpur State to Pakistan Pir Bukhsh Soomro ∗ Before analyzing the role of Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani in the affairs of Bahawalpur, it will be appropriate to briefly outline the origins of the state, one of the oldest in the region. After the death of Al-Mustansar Bi’llah, the caliph of Egypt, his descendants for four generations from Sultan Yasin to Shah Muzammil remained in Egypt. But Shah Muzammil’s son Sultan Ahmad II left the country between l366-70 in the reign of Abu al- Fath Mumtadid Bi’llah Abu Bakr, the sixth ‘Abbasid caliph of Egypt, 1 and came to Sind. 2 He was succeeded by his son, Abu Nasir, followed by Abu Qahir 3 and Amir Muhammad Channi. Channi was a very competent person. When Prince Murad Bakhsh, son of the Mughal emperor Akbar, came to Multan, 4 he appreciated his services, and awarded him the mansab of “Panj Hazari”5 and bestowed on him a large jagir . Channi was survived by his two sons, Muhammad Mahdi and Da’ud Khan. Mahdi died ∗ Lecturer in History, Government Post-Graduate College for Boys, Dera Ghazi Khan. 1 Punjab States Gazetteers , Vol. XXXVI, A. • The Indian Title Badge: 1911-1947 Jim Carlisle, OMSA No
The Journal of the Orders and Medals SocieW of America The Indian Title Badge: 1911-1947 Jim Carlisle, OMSA No. 5577 ing George V, on the occasion of the Delhi Durbar, Kintroduced the India Title Badge on 12 December 1911 to be conferred, as a symbol of honor and respect, on the holders of a title conferred by the King-Emperor. The Badge was a step-award in three classes given to civilians and Viceroy’s commissioned officers of the Indian Army for faithful service or acts of public welfare. Awards of the Badge began in January 1912. In many ways, the Badge is a cross between the Imperial Service Medal and the Kaisar-I-Hind. As with the Imperial Service Medal (ISM), it was awarded for long and faithful service to members of the civil and provincial services. Unlike the ISM it was also awarded to members of the military as well as to civilians not in the civil service. It was similar to the Kaisar-I-Hind in that there were three classes to the award as well as being awarded for service in India. Unlike the Kaisar-I- Hind, its award was restricted to non-Europeans. Unlike either of these awards, the India Title Badge also provided a specific title in the form of a personal distinction to the recipient. Specifics regarding the titles will be provided below. It is interesting to note that a title granted with the 1st India Title Badge, Class III- obverse Class of the Badge is identical to that granted to recipients of the Order of British India 1 st Class, Sardar Bahadur.

  • Indian Order of Merit
INDIAN ORDER OF MERIT HISTORICAL RECORDS 1837 - 1947 VOLUME ONE 1837 - 1860 CLIFF PARRETT AND RANA CHHINA TOM DONOVAN EDITIONS The definitive historical record of the Indian Order of Merit and its recipients, many with full details of the gallant deeds for which their decorations were awarded. More than a book about a medal – a detailed history of the campaigns fought by Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army, deeply researched, much from original primary sources and records in Delhi and London. The I.O.M. is the oldest decoration granted exclusively for bravery in the British Empire and it was perceived, at least until 1912, as the Indian soldier’s equivalent of the Victoria Cross. This work will encompass the original conception of the Order, its establishment in 1837, and the manner in which it was awarded throughout the 110 years of its existence. Details of all known awards are provided within a narrative that places them in their historical context. Hitherto it has been difficult to get a reasonable perspective on the services of Indian regiments during a period when despatches and narratives were biased towards extolling the services of British troops. A different and enlightening approach has been taken over previously well trodden ground, resulting in a contextual narrative of particular interest for students of Indian Army campaigning. In cases where there was a surfeit of reports on the gallant deeds of a particular soldier, perhaps for a relatively obscure action, as much as possible of this has been retained. Rewards for gallantry in the most important actions, such as those at Delhi and Lucknow, were often granted on the basis of ‘general citations.’ In order to address the consequent absence of personal information, services of the decorated soldiers’ regiments have been recounted in detail.

Rich gifts of raiment or grain or gold? Lo! I have flung to the East and the West Priceless treasures torn from my breast, and yielded the sons of my stricken womb to the drum-beats of duty, the sabers of doom. Gathered like pearls in their alien graves Silent they sleep by the Persian waves, scattered like shells on Egyptian sands, they lie with pale brows and brave, broken hands, strewn like blossoms mowed down by chance on the blood-brown meadows of Flanders and France.
