Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The object of this thesis is to explore Pardo Bazan's approach to travel as an aesthetically rewarding experience and also as a soul-searching exercise in which she voices her opinions and concerns with regard to the state of late nineteenth-century Spain and compares it to some other European countries. Indeed, in the Galician author's chronicles, which reveal her versatility and multifaceted interests as a travel writer, the journey itself takes second place to cultural, social, political, artistic, religious, and intellectual considerations. Another aspect of Pardo Bazan's travel works that this study will develop is her uneasy stance with regard to progress, technological advancement, and modern civilization, as illustrated, principally, in her foreign chronicles. For it is her apprehension and at times aversion to modern technology that place her in an anachronistic position in relation to some of the events and places covered in her travel accounts. -

El subversivo: una aproximación interseccional a las identidades representadas en ‘Novelas de la Violencia’ escritas por mujeres A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures of the College of Arts and Sciences by Juan Camilo Galeano Sánchez M.A. Universidad Eafit December 2011 Committee Chair: Patricia Valladares-Ruiz, Ph.D. Abstract “The Male Outlaw: An Intersectional Approach to Identities in ‘Novelas de La Violencia’ Written by Women” establishes a dialogue between matters of gender, class, race, and national identity in the novels: Jacinta y la Violencia (1967) by Soraya Juncal, Cola de Zorro (1970) by Fanny Buitrago, Triquitraques del Trópico (1972) by Flor Romero, and Estaba la Pájara Pinta Sentada en el Verde Limón (1975), by Albalucía Ángel. All these novels deal with a particularly acute period in Colombia’s war, La Violencia (1946-1958), during which the radicalization of bipartisanship, the politicization of the police force, and the repression of any ideology close to Socialism, originated resistance groups as well as a massive manslaughter whose numbers are yet to be determined. My hypothesis is that, even though these authors do not represent the male outlaw as a hero, they construct the character as a counter-hegemonic individual that is able not only to put into question every monolithic identity constructed under the shadow of patriarchy, but also to build new identities that challenge the previous ones. To demonstrate it, I have divided my dissertation in five chapters. -

Cuando el arte domina violentamente a un individuo, lo conduce a las concepciones de las edades [remotas] en que el arte floreció más poderosa- mente, causándole una regresión [en la memoria]. (...) Los poetas son los aliviadores de la vida, pues al tratar de mejorar la vida de los hombres, se alejan del presente fatigoso o bien pintan el presente de colores a la luz que proyectan al pasado. Pueden lograr esto porque son ellos a su vez criaturas reminiscentes que son como puentes hacia edades y concep- ciones arcaicas: religiones y culturas muertas o moribundas. Está claro que el protoidioma estaba integrado a estas culturas arcaicas, y también lo es que los poetas tienen acceso a esta proto- memoria. José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955), en Ensayo de estética a manera de prólogo (1914) de su libro La deshumanización del arte (1925), criticó analíticamente el poemario El pasajero de José Moreno Villa en torno a la metáfora de un ciprés-llama y concluyó lo siguiente: El yo de cada poeta es un nuevo diccionario, un nuevo idioma al través del cual llegan a nosotros objetos, como el ciprés-llama , de quien no teníamos noticia. -

Both, I argue, function as narratives that shape collective consciousness in that era. Beginning with the cholera epidemic of 1833, medical language increasingly insinuates itself into the constructions of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Cholera gives rise to medical fictions that invade or “contaminate” many domains of Cuban life. In effect, the disease blurred the distinctions between the concepts of contagion, race, and sin; the physical and the moral were thereby collapsed into one category. -
