The general opinion is that language cannot be understood without change. In its turn, change cannot be explained without a proper understanding of the complex, multidimensional nature of language a task which has constantly demanded the assistance of other fields of study. Among these, sociology and recent trends in evolutionary biology have introduced new and illuminating perspectives. What 1 intend to do in this basically review article is (a) delimit a number of concepts and keywords which very ofien tend to be used interchangeably; (b) pose a number of questions which to my mind would deserve consideration (ofien, reconsideration), with particular referente to the role of writing as a crucial dimension of the history of, among many others, English, the language which concerns me as a researcher; and (c) frarne rny discussion within the current theoretical models which have developed from the incorporation of the above mentioned fields to historical linguistics. TRADE MARKS Brexit - Deal or no deal – what does this mean for your IP? In March this year the UK and the European Commission issued a joint working document which includes guidance on IP issues post Brexit which Barker Brettell commented on here. In that document there is provision for the automatic extension of any granted EU rights to the UK post Brexit and for an application process for the continuation of any pending EU applications into additional UK applications. This joint working document made it clear that although the UK is due to leave the European Union on the 29th March 2019, provided that the UK and the EU arrive at an exit agreement there will be a transition period through to the 31st December 2020, throughout which EU law will still apply within the UK. On the 24th September, mindful of the increasing speculation regarding a ‘no deal’ Brexit, the UK government issued a number of technical notes. The UK government made it clear that it will make unilateral provision for the continuation of all EU rights in the UK if no deal is struck and that those provisions will mirror the joint working document. In such a ‘no deal’ scenario however, the transitional provisions taking us to the end of 2020 will not apply. Rights would be impacted as of the exit date. It could be ‘business as usual’ for IP until the end of 2020 and indeed patents are unaffected by Brexit, however businesses need to be aware of the implications going forward and to consider what action can be taken now to minimise any risks and potential costs. -

COLIN LIVINGSTONE TAPLEY 1909 to 1995 Colin Livingstone Tapley was the third son of Harold Livingstone Tapley (1875-1932) and Jean Brodie Tapley nee Burt. He was born 7-5-1909 in Dunedin, one of 6 children, 5 sons followed by a daughter. Colin was educated in NZ and in the 1930s won a contest of which the prize was a Hollywood audition. He went on to be a supporting actor in several Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount films during the 1930s but joined the air force in Canada when WW2 broke out, later moving to Britain where he was in a non fighting role. He had taken up flying before the war. He returned to NZ to Wanaka for a short time but then resumed his acting career, appearing in “the Dam Busters,” 1954. In England he married socialite Patsie Lyon nee Hambro. He retired from Acting in 1983 and they lived in the village of Coates in Gloucestershire. LIMITATIONS ON COPYRIGHT PROTECTION FOR FORMAT IDEAS IN REALITY TELEVISION PROGRAMMING I. INTRODUCTION Television networks constantly compete to find and produce the next big hit. The shifting economic landscape forged by increasing competition between and among ever-proliferating media platforms, however, places extreme pressure on network profit margins. Fully scripted hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies have become increasingly costly, while delivering diminishing ratings in the key demographics most valued by advertisers. It therefore is not surprising that the reality television genre has become a staple of network schedules. New reality shows are churned out each season.1 The main appeal, of course, is that they are cheap to make and addictive to watch. Networks are able to take ordinary people and create a show without having to pay “A-list” actor salaries and hire teams of writers.2 Many of the most popular programs are unscripted, meaning lower cost for higher ratings. Even where the ratings are flat, such shows are capable of generating higher profit margins through advertising directed to large groups of more readily targeted viewers. -

Copyright and re-use policy See http://shura.shu.ac.uk/information.html Sheffield Hallam University Research Archive http://shura.shu.ac.uk FEATURE FILMS ON BRITISH TELEVISION IN THE 1970S Preamble This is an ‘interim report’ on a long-term project on the history of the showing of feature films on British television, covering virtually the entire history of broadcast television from the 1930s to the present. Not to mislead you, I will not be proposing an elaborate thesis or developing a complex argument: it is very much a snapshot from work in progress, a summary of selected findings, for whatever interest it might contain – and I would appreciate constructive feedback on the extent to which it is interesting! I will not be attempting even a full account of the ten-year period in my title but will try to give a general survey of the field in the 1970s while focusing on 1975 for most of my examples. The choice of year is not arbitrary: aside from coming at the exact midpoint of the decade and being reasonably representative, it also allows me to focus on a number of key controversies, events and developments affecting the presentation of films on television in subsequent years.
