The Original Art is a showcase for the most outstanding children’s book illustration published in the U.S. each year. The first exhibit was held in 1980 at the Master Eagle Gallery in . Ten years later, it moved to its permanent home: the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators. It is a juried exhibit and the best-attended annual show at the museum. The art fills two galleries, and the books are on display, so visitors can study the printed work. To expand the show’s reach, the Society also offers educational programs that illuminate the creation of children’s books. Guided tours, hands-on workshops, lectures, and demonstrations for school groups, families, librarians, aspiring illustrators, and the general public are scheduled throughout the run of the exhibition and are led by a wide range of artists, educators, and industry professionals.

Each year, three books are awarded medals—one Gold and two Silver—for best in show. They are represented in the galleries, along with art by the winner of the Dilys Evans Founder's Award, given to the best new children’s book artist whose work was selected for the exhibit. This year’s winner is Chris Sasaki for Paper Son: The Inspiring Story of Tyrus Wong, Immigrant and Artist (Schwartz & Wade). When an animated film is in the planning and development stage, the script is written first. Then an artist creates a storyboard, singling out the key images that best convey the plot line. And finally, the in-between frames are filled in, creating continuous motion and action. Like an animated film, a tells a story with images. But an animated film generally has twenty-four frames per second. That adds up to 2,880 drawings in a two-minute film! A picture book does not have that luxury.

A picture book is basically a storyboard. It’s an with only a few frames, and each of those frames is a work of art (often suitable for framing), with its contents carefully thought out and decided upon. In creating the illustrations, the artist has an opportunity to expand the narrative in ways that the text alone cannot. And just as every single word in a picture book is carefully chosen, so are the brushstrokes, Laura Vaccaro Seeger pencil lines, colors, content, perspectives, designs, and compositions. is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator. Lifetime Achievement Award

Mary Blair (1911–1978) was a trailblazing designer for Studios, draw- ing concept art for such films as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Cinderella. She also worked as a graphic designer, Broadway set designer, muralist, and children’s books artist. Her modernist style, sharply defined figures, and passionate love of color were evident in the films she worked on and became signature features in the whimsical titles she illustrated, all published by Little Golden Books.

Looking at Mary’s art now, not knowing its history or provenance, it would be easy to assume it was created by a contemporary illustrator. The images are bold and graphic; the colors are exuberant and unexpected. Although the number of books she produced is small, critics agree that her influence on artists at work today is unmistakable. Titles she illustrated include Baby’s House by Gelolo McHugh, The Up and Down Book, which she wrote as well as illustrated, The Golden Book of Little Verses by Miriam Clark Potter, The New Golden , compiled by Norman Lloyd, and I Can Fly by Ruth Krauss, still in print after sixty-eight years. A collec- tion of her work was also released as A Mary Blair Treasury of Golden Books in 2012.

Mary’s work has been celebrated in exhibits at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, and the Walt Disney Family Museum, and she is the subject of biographies for children as well as for adults.

6 Nancy Ekholm Burkert Lifetime Achievement Award

Nancy Ekholm Burkert creates illustrations that are rich and realistic in detail, yet fanciful and timeless in content. Whether rendered in watercolor, pen and ink, or pencil and charcoal, her art consistently demonstrates her mastery of light, shad- ow, and depth and her ability to capture unique characters and distinctive settings. When her work was exhibited at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the show’s catalog stated, “Nancy brings to her task the highest aesthetic measure. No detail is too insignificant to warrant intense scrutiny, and her exacting standards reflect the meticulous research she brings to any endeavor.”

The first book Nancy illustrated, James and the Giant Peach by (Knopf), perfectly captured the story’s swing between menace and bliss. She followed it with spare, evocative images for A Child’s Calendar by John Updike (also Knopf). Then she illustrated two classics by Hans Christian Anderson, creating an immersive view of ancient China for The Nightingale, and a celebration of nature for The Fir Tree. (Both HarperCollins.)

Other titles Nancy has illustrated also pay homage to the natural world, notably The Scroobious Pip by Edward Lear (HarperCollins) and Mouse & Lion, a retelling of the Aesop fable by her son, Rand Burkert (Michael di Capua Books). Valentine and Orson, which she wrote as well as illustrated, received a Boston Globe – Horn Book Award, and her best-known, best-loved work, the truly enchanting Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: A Tale from the Brothers Grimm, was a New York Times Notable Book and a Caldecott Honor Book.
