Belkin and Peter C. Cornillon Abstract. Oceanic fronts shape marine ecosystems; therefore front mapping and characterization is one of the most important aspects of physical oceanography. Here we report on the first effort to map and describe all major fronts in the World Ocean’s Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). Apart from a geographical review, these fronts are classified according to their origin and physical mechanisms that maintain them. This first-ever zero-order pattern of the LME fronts is based on a unique global frontal data base assembled at the University of Rhode Island. Thermal fronts were automatically derived from 12 years (1985-1996) of twice-daily satellite 9-km resolution global AVHRR SST fields with the Cayula-Cornillon front detection algorithm. These frontal maps serve as guidance in using hydrographic data to explore subsurface thermohaline fronts, whose surface thermal signatures have been mapped from space. Our most recent study of chlorophyll fronts in the Northwest Atlantic from high-resolution 1-km data (Belkin and O’Reilly, 2007) revealed a close spatial association between chlorophyll fronts and SST fronts, suggesting causative links between these two types of fronts. From the President I recently experienced a great sense of history and admiration for early Spanish and Portuguese navigators during visits to historic sites in Spain and Portugal. For example, the Barcelona Maritime Museum, housed in a ship yard dating from the 13th century and nearby towering Christopher Columbus column. In Lisbon the ‘Monument to the Discoveries’ reminds you of the achievements of great explorers who played a major role in Portugal's age of discovery and building its empire. Many great navigators including; Vasco da Gama, Magellan and Prince Henry the Navigator are commemorated. Similarly, in Gibraltar you are surrounded by military and naval heritage. Gibraltar was the port to which the badly damaged HMS Victory and Lord Nelson’s body were brought following the Battle of Trafalgar fought less than 100 miles to the west. This experience was also a reminder of the exploits of early voyages of discovery around Australia. Matthew Flinders, to whom Australians owe a debt of gratitude features in the June edition of the Naval Historical Review. The Review, with its assessment of this great navigator will be mailed to members in early June. Matthew Flinders grave was recently discovered during redevelopment work on Euston Station in London. Similarly, this edition of Call the Hands focuses on matters connected to Lieutenant Phillip Parker King RN and his ship, His Majesty’s Cutter (HMC) Mermaid which explored north west Australia in 1818. The well-known indigenous character Bungaree who lived in the Port Jackson area at the time accompanied Parker on this voyage. Other stories in this edition are inspired by more recent events such as the keel laying ceremony for the first Arafura Class patrol boat attended by the Chief of Navy. -

Joseph Conrad in his writings, refers to "The mysteriously born traditions of seacraft, command, and unity in an occu pation in which men's lives depend on each other." Still true today, how much more was this so with the mariners of long ago, who sailed in smaU ships for thousands of lonely leagues through unknown seas, for on them alone rested the safety of the ship and all on board. Dr. Johnson wrote "No man will be a saUor who has con trivance to get himself into jaU, for being in a ship is being in a jail with the chance of being drowned." There was more than an element of truth in this, for the seaman who refused to sail could be clapped in jail; whUst THE PRESIDENT, COMMANDER NORMAN S PIXLEY 79 those who did sail faced months in a confined space with acute discomfort, severe punishment at times, and provisions and water which deteriorated as the voyage proceeded. Scurvy kiUed more than storm and shipwreck until James Cook in his first voyage proved that it could be prevented. Clothing was rarely changed, the sailor coming wet to his hammock from his watch on deck in bad weather. Rats and cockroaches lived and thrived amongst the pro visions, adding to the problems of hygiene and health. -

Gulkula Regional Training Centre & Garma Festival The Gulkula Regional training is adjacent to the mine and provides young Yolngu men and women training across a wide range of industry sectors. These include; extraction (mining), civil construction, building construction, hospitality and administration. This is also where Garma Festival is hosted partnering with Yothu Yindi Foundation. 4. Space Base The Arnhem Space Centre will be Australia’s first commercial spaceport. THYLACINIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION The single member of the family Thylacinidae, Thylacinus cynocephalus, known as the Thylacine, Tasmanian Tiger or Wolf, is a large carnivorous marsupial (Fig. 20.1). Generally sandy yellow in colour, it has 15 to 20 distinct transverse dark stripes across the back from shoulders to tail. While the large head is reminiscent of the dog and wolf, the tail is long and characteristically stiff and the legs are relatively short. Body hair is dense, short and soft, up to 15 mm in length. Body proportions are similar to those of the Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus harrisii, the Eastern Quoll, Dasyurus viverrinus and the Tiger Quoll, Dasyurus maculatus. The Thylacine is digitigrade. There are five digital pads on the forefoot and four on the hind foot. Figure 20.1 Thylacine, side view of the whole animal. (© ABRS)[D. Kirshner] The face is fox-like in young animals, wolf- or dog-like in adults. Hairs on the cheeks, above the eyes and base of the ears are whitish-brown. Facial vibrissae are relatively shorter, finer and fewer than in Tasmanian Devils and Quolls. The short ears are about 80 mm long, erect, rounded and covered with short fur. Sexual dimorphism occurs, adult males being larger on average. Jaws are long and powerful and the teeth number 46. In the vertebral column there are only two sacrals instead of the usual three and from 23 to 25 caudal vertebrae rather than 20 to 21. -

790 Current Anthropology Volume 59, Number 6, December 2018 Learning from Paleo-Landscapes Defining the Land-Use Systems of the Ancient Malayo-Polynesian Homeland by Mike T. Carson and Hsiao-chun Hung Paleo-landscape investigations contextualize how people have inhabited and coevolved dynamically with their land- forms, resource zones, and social-ecological niches during measured time intervals and through extended chrono- logical sequences. Toward illustrating this research potential, changing paleo-landscapes 2500–1500 BC reveal the ancient conditions of the places where people lived in both Taiwan and the northern Philippines, in this case exploring what transpired there during a critical time period that heralded deep transformation of the language history, cultural heritage, economic production, and population demography of Island Southeast Asia as known today. During the time range of interest, the region’s coastlines and habitat configurations were substantially different from today’s circum- stances, prior to change in sea level, accelerated slope erosion, lowland sedimentary buildup, and some of the world’s most rapid recorded tectonic uplift. The results show that people in eastern Taiwan at 2200–2000 BC faced a crisis of limited suitable landforms for their particular mode of subsistence economy, thus instigating overseas migration to the northern Philippines as a means to expand into other territories, with continued effects through 1500 BC and thereafter. Encouraged by the support of William Sorell, the former Lieutenant- Governor, and Edward Curr, who had recently returned from the colony, they formed the Van Diemen’s Land Company and applied to Lord Bathurst for a grant of 500,000 acres. Bathurst agreed to a grant of 250,000 acres. The Van Diemen’s Land Company received a royal charter in 1825 giving it the right to cultivate land, build roads and bridges, lend money to colonists, execute public works, and build and buy houses, wharves and other buildings. Curr was appointed the chief agent of the Company in Van Diemen’s Land. -

3 KUNINJKU PEOPLE, BUFFALO, AND CONSERVATION IN ARNHEM LAND: ‘IT’S A CONTRADICTION THAT FRUSTRATES US’ Jon Altman On Tuesday 20 May 2014 I was escorting two philanthropists to rock art galleries at Dukaladjarranj on the edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment. I was there in a corporate capacity, as a direc- tor of the Karrkad-Kanjdji Trust, seeking to raise funds to assist the Djelk and Warddeken Indigenous Protected Areas (IPAs) in their work tackling the conservation challenges of maintain- ing the environmental and cultural values of 20,000 square kilometres of western Arnhem Land. We were flying low in a Robinson R44 helicopter over the Tomkinson River flood plains – Bulkay – wetlands renowned for their biodiversity. The experienced pilot, nicknamed ‘Batman’, flew very low, pointing out to my guests herds of wild buffalo and their highly visible criss-cross tracks etched in the landscape. He remarked over the intercom: ‘This is supposed to be an IPA but those feral buffalo are trashing this country, they should be eliminated, shot out like up at Warddeken’. His remarks were hardly helpful to me, but he had a point that I could not easily challenge mid-air; buffalo damage in an iconic wetland within an IPA looked bad. Later I tried to explain to the guests in a quieter setting that this was precisely why the Djelk Rangers needed the extra philanthropic support that the Karrkad-Kanjdji Trust was seeking to raise. * * * 3093 Unstable Relations.indd 54 5/10/2016 5:40 PM Kuninjku People, Buffalo, and Conservation in Arnhem Land This opening vignette highlights a contradiction that I want to explore from a variety of perspectives in this chapter – abundant populations of environmentally destructive wild buffalo roam widely in an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) declared for its natural and cultural values of global significance, according to International Union for the Conservation of Nature criteria. -

Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries vii Preface In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Similarly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. Dutch literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term ‘Dutch’ for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term ‘Dutch’ is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects.
