Playing Rugby for Jordanhill College Rugby Football Club 1958 - 1966 John Henderson ‘The Boot’ Remembers Playing Rugby for Jordanhill College RFC ‘The Boot’ Remembers When I first matriculated in October 1958 at the Scottish School of Physical Education, Jordanhill, Glasgow to undergo a three year diploma course of training in order to qualify as a teacher of Physical Education, I had no idea that some years later my senior rugby career would turn out to be as creditable as it did. Although I knew then that I was a very accurate and lengthy instep place-kicker of a rugby ball, I was under no illusion that my getting a place in the Jordanhill College Rugby Football Club top squad would be easy, nor did I have any notion then that retaining a first choice spot in the 1st XV for a good number of seasons might possibly occur. However, I was aware of the fact that graduating from College was not the end of the opportunity to play senior rugby for Jordanhill, as former students as players were not only considered eligible, but were also deemed essential in order to maintain a fighting chance for coach Bill Dickinson‟s side to compete at the highest levels possible in Scotland. Thus time was on my side, if only I was patient, and prepared to work hard at the game. But first I had, during my student days, to convince mentors Bill Dickinson and George Orr of my potential, and then, if this was accomplished, to provide consistent proof thereafter of my continuing value as a full back/three-quarter and place kicker in the top side in its annual attempts to win the Scottish Unofficial Club Championship and the Glasgow District Knock-Out Trophy. -

This briefing paper sits alongside the Scottish FA podcast on The Value of Scottish Football produced in partnership with Grant Jarvie1 from the University of Edinburgh. The briefing explains why football is a real asset to Scotland. Those who know football will recognise a lot of this and the real challenge is to make a convincing case to those who don’t know or maybe skeptical about the value of football to Scotland. Scottish football may not be as rich as the big five European leagues but revenue generation over the last five years has been increasing2. In 2014/15 Scottish Premiership revenue was about £103 million. -

This year’s report includes our usual in-depth analysis of the 2010/11 season using the clubs’ audited accounts. However, we acknowledge that given the dominance of Rangers1 demise over recent months, these figures may be looked at with a new perspective. Nevertheless, it is important to analyse how the SPL performed in season 2010/11 with Rangers and explore the potential impact the loss of the club will have on the league. Red spells danger? rfl official guide 2012 working.e$S:RL GUIDE 2006 FRIDAY PM 17/1/12 14:41 Page 131 Section A Membership and Membership Obligations rfl official guide 2012 working.e$S:RL GUIDE 2006 FRIDAY PM 17/1/12 14:41 Page 132 MEMBERSHIP & MEMBERSHIP OBLIGATIONS Section A1: Membership & Membership Obligations CLUBS: ACCEPTANCE OF OPERATIONAL RULES A1:1 All Clubs which participate in Super League, the Championships, or in any league or competition or any game under the jurisdiction of the RFL or organised by the RFL are deemed by acceptance of the invitation to be bound by the Operational Rules (including but not limited to those relating to discipline or Misconduct), the Rules and Regulations of any body of which the RFL is a member, the terms of any agreement entered into by the RFL and the Laws of the Game and accept the jurisdiction of the RFL. A copy of the Laws of the Game and the Operational Rules relevant to the particular competition shall be sent to each of the intended participating Clubs prior to that Club's entry in such competition being accepted. APPLICABLE LAWS A1.2 All Clubs which participate in Super League or in any league or competition or any game under the jurisdiction of the RFL or organised by the RFL are required to act in accordance with all applicable laws. Each Club agrees that the RFL shall be entitled to take any action and/or make such orders as it considers appropriate where to do otherwise would knowingly allow a Club to breach any applicable laws even where such behaviour is not prohibited through a strict interpretation of these Operational Rules. -
