Lewis All rights reserved ABSTRACT Spacious Minds, Empty Selves: Coping and Resilience in the Tibetan Exile Community Sara E. Lewis Mental health in the Tibetan refugee community has been studied extensively; but like most research on political violence, these studies focus almost exclusively on trauma. We know little about those who manage to thrive and what kinds of sociocultural practices enhance their resilience. This dissertation, “Spacious Minds, Empty Selves: Coping and Resilience in the Tibetan Exile Community” investigates how Buddhism and other sociocultural factors support coping and resilience among Tibetan refugees living in Dharamsala, India. In contrast to other work that focuses exclusively on trauma, the aim of this project was to examine the broad range of reactions to political violence, exploring how people thrive in the face of adversity. Drawing on 14 months of extended participant observation and 80 in-depth interviews conducted in the Tibetan language, this project investigates how communities through social processes cope in the context of political violence and resettlement. The study draws upon and aims to extend theory in three distinct but overlapping areas: 1) trauma and resilience; 2) the anthropology of memory and temporality; and 3) the transferability of interventions across cultures. The dissertation argues that the Tibetan concept of resilience is more an active process than a personality attribute. -

THOMAS MERTON AND LEONARD COHEN: SOUL-BROTHERS AND SPIRITUAL GUIDES Donald Grayston O Canada In 2009, it fell to me to give the presidential address to the International Thomas Merton Society’s general meeting in Rochester, NY (Grayston 2009). As the first Canadian president of the ITMS, I wanted to strike a Canadian note, if I could. That decided, the next question was how. I got my first clue when I read a review by Pico Iyer of Leonard Cohen’s then-recent book of poetry, Book of Longing (Iyer, 2008). In that review he makes a brief reference to Thomas Merton as the poet Cohen most resembles. So far so good, then: Leonard Cohen, a Canadian poet, visual artist and singer- songwriter, with a resemblance to Thomas Merton. 1 Then the next challenge: how to frame that resemblance. Happily, I ran across an earlier article in our national paper of record, The Globe and Mail , by Sarah Hampson, containing the inside–page heading, “No longer a monk, but monastic in his way” (Hampson, May 2007). And if Cohen was monastic in his own way, who else was monastic in his own way if not Thomas Merton? Will there ever again be a monk like him? We can’t know that for certain, of course; but the chances, in my view, are unlikely in the extreme, not only because of Merton’s gifts and temperament, but because of the particular historical moment in which he exercised his gifts. So in my address I told a story about a Christian and a Jew—a Jew from Montréal with a strong affinity for Catholicism (Ryan 2009), and a Christian in rural Kentucky who once commented to Abraham Joshua Heschel that he often felt that he wanted to be “a true Jew under [his] Catholic skin ….” (Merton 1985, 434–35). -

“‘Monastic in his [own] way’: Thomas Merton and Leonard Cohen” Presidential Address / International Thomas Merton Society Eleventh General Meeting and Conference Nazareth College, Rochester, NY / June 11, 2009 By Donald Grayston* Friends, members of the ITMS, visitors from near and far: let me offer my own word of welcome to you as we come to this rich feast of encounter and reflection, the 11 th general meeting and conference of the International Thomas Merton Society. In thinking of what I wanted to say tonight, I was guided by two considerations. First, I wanted to say something that would relate to our theme, “Bearing Witness to the Light,” with its focus on interfaith understanding and dialogue. 1 Second, it occurred to me that as the first Canadian to be president of the ITMS I ought to give you some of what in Canada we call “Canadian content.” This phrase refers to the requirement of *Donald Grayston, a priest of the Anglican diocese of New Westminster, British Columbia, was president of the ITMS in 2007-09. He retired in 2004 after 15 years of teaching Religious Studies at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, for the last three years of which he was director of the Institute for the Humanities. He is also past president of the Thomas Merton Society of Canada, current (2009-2011) program chair of the ITMS, and chair of the planning team of Building Bridges Vancouver, a public education program in Vancouver concerned with the Israeli-Palestinian divide. the Canadian Radio and Television Commission that a certain percentage of songs played and television shows broadcast in Canada must be produced in Canada, lest we find our cultural distinctives washed away by the tsunami of creativity coming from our great neighbor to the south. -

Why We Travel
Why We Travel Pico Iyer We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate. We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again -- to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more. The beauty of this whole process was best described, perhaps, before people even took to frequent flying, by George Santayana in his lapidary essay, "The Philosophy of Travel." We "need sometimes," the Harvard philosopher wrote, "to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what." I like that stress on work, since never more than on the road are we shown how proportional our blessings are to the difficulty that precedes them; and I like the stress on a holiday that's "moral" since we fall into our ethical habits as easily as into our beds at night. Few of us ever forget the connection between "travel" and "travail," and I know that I travel in large part in search of hardship -- both my own, which I want to feel, and others', which I need to see. Travel in that sense guides us toward a better balance of wisdom and compassion -- of seeing the world clearly, and yet feeling it truly. -
