  • The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’S Subjugation of Silla
Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions. I would also like to express my gratitude to Umehara Takeshi, the director general of the center, and Nakanism Susumu, also of the center, who made my research there possible.

WorldPride 2019 will be held in conjunction with Stonewall 50, the official commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. 2019 marks the first time that WorldPride, a global LGBT Pride event, will be celebrated in the United States. Previous host cities have included Rome, Jerusalem, London, and Toronto, while Madrid will host the next WorldPride in 2017. NYC Pride’s bid was accepted during the Annual General Meeting of InterPride in Las Vegas this weekend. We hope that you, our intended ASAA 2020 delegates, will use this document as a way to discover the breadth of research being undertaken and reach out to other scholars. MEDIA RELEASE Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Film Festival Turns the Spotlight on Asia Hosting the Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance Monday 23 January 2017: A long-term champion of Asian Pacific queer cinema, Queer Screen’s Mardi Gras Film Festival turns the spotlight on Asia this year by hosting delegates from the Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance (APQFFA) and screening a range of contemporary and classic feature films, documentaries and short films produced in the Pan Asia region. Formed in 2015, the APQFFA is made up of members from 17 Asian Pacific queer film festivals and aims to enhance the visibility of LGBTIQ people and cinema in the region. Co-founder Jay Lin explains: "For years as a director and programmer for the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival, I have looked often by default to mostly non-Asian films to fill the line-up, but the reality is that there are many stories originating from the Asia- Pacific that are worthy of sharing with each other. Thus, I founded the APQFFA, along with other members, to start sharing more resources with each other to find these films, and encouraging mutual communication that will hopefully result in further fruitful endeavours including co-productions, festival exchanges, joint promotions and many wonderful things that can happen when people dream beyond borders, languages, and restrictions”. Festival Director Paul Struthers added: “We are thrilled to host our colleagues from the Alliance festivals and to hear about their experiences screening LGBTIQ cinema, often in countries that are not as welcoming and inclusive as Australia.
