GHG accounting can be a complicated process. The Climate Action Corps Guidebook will make GHG accounting more accessible by providing step-by-step instruction on which tools to use and what to measure to determine your Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions. If you have no idea what your Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are, that’s okay. We’ll help with that, too. Here are a few things you can expect.

• Get an Estimate. Guidance on why you should get an estimate of your Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and training on how to get your estimate using the Climate Neutral Brand Emissions Estimator.

• GHG Accounting 101. If you’re completely new to GHG accounting, we’ll give you the crash course to get you up to speed on what you need to know to measure and track your company’s emissions.

• Measure Your Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or operated facilities) and Scope 2 (purchased energy used in owned or operated facilities) Emissions. We’ll provide guidance on how to use tools, such as the EPA Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator, but you are free to use the measurement approach that works best for you.

• Measure Your Scope 3 Emissions (emissions associated with your value chain). We’ll provide training on how to use tools, such as the EPA Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator, the Higg Index, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data, etc., but you are free to use the measurement approach that works best for you.

Part 1 of the complete Climate Action Corps Guidebook will be available for Climate Action Corps members in March 2020. 11 PLAN.

Ok, you’ve got your measurement. Now you’re ready to set a target and develop an action plan. Do you set an absolute or intensity target? Should you set a science-based target? Do you make your targets public or keep them internal? What does an ambitious but achievable target look like? What sorts of targets are other companies setting? Can you set separate or combined targets? There’s a lot to consider when setting targets. We’ll give you more background on the options, give you examples of targets that other outdoor industry companies have set and get you on the path to setting a target and creating an action plan.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN YOUR GHG FOOTPRINT

KNOW YOUR GHG EMISSION SCOPES Why do we keep referring to scopes? The Greenhouse Gas Protocol classifies a company’s GHG emissions into three categories referred to as scopes. Emissions associated with your owned and operated facilities are referred to as Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, while your upstream (what happens before you sell the product) and downstream (what happens after you sell the product) emissions are referred to as Scope 3 emissions.

SCOPE 1 EMISSIONS SCOPE 2 EMISSIONS SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources Indirect emissions from the generation of Indirect emissions that occur in the value chain, (e.g., company-owned facilities and vehicles) purchased electricity, steam, heating, or including both upstream and downstream (e.g., cooling (e.g., your utility bill) materials, manufacturing, consumer-use phase, etc.)

THE GREENHOUSE GAS PROTOCOL (GHG PROTOCOL) is the most widely used international accounting tool for government and business leaders to understand, quantify and manage greenhouse gas emissions.

The GHG Protocol arose when the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) recognized the need for an international standard for corporate GHG accounting and reporting in the late 1990s.

The first edition of the Corporate Standard was published in 2001 and has been regularly updated since that date.

[Everyone loves a diagram. This one is from the GHG Protocol.]

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPERATIONAL IMPACT SCOPE 1 + 2 EMISSIONS While Scope 1 and 2 are likely a small percentage of your overall emissions, they are an important place to start while you work on collecting data for Scope 3 emissions. Identifying emissions sources and measuring Scope 1 and 2 emissions can help you become more familiar with GHG accounting processes and relevant reduction opportunities before rolling out a climate strategy to your value chain. Scope 1 and 2 are also a practical place to begin setting targets as they are generally areas you have direct control over and can more easily implement

SCOPE 1 GHG EMISSIONS ARE DIRECT EMISSIONS FROM OWNED OR CONTROLLED SOURCES

YOUR SCOPE 1 GHG EMISSIONS MIGHT INCLUDE: • Natural gas or other direct fuels used for heating stores, offices or warehouses owned or operated directly • Fuel used for owned or operated vehicles • Refrigeration and air conditioning leaks

SCOPE 2 GHG EMISSIONS ARE INDIRECT EMISSIONS FROM THE GENERATION OF PURCHASED ENERGY

YOUR SCOPE 2 GHG EMISSIONS MIGHT INCLUDE: • Purchased electricity, steam, heating or cooling used in stores, offices or warehouses for lighting, heating or cooling, office equipment, etc.

GUIDANCE: IDENTIFYING AND MEASURING SCOPE 1 GHG EMISSIONS

In order to calculate your company’s Scope 1 emissions, you will need to collect TOOLS business activity data for the sources that your company owns or controls. Access the EPA Simplified GHG Emissions First, you’ll need to identify all the vehicles, buildings and facilities that are owned, controlled or Calculator and accompanying guidance to leased by your company. From there, determine which of these assets qualify as sources of Scope measure your Scope 1 and 2 emissions 1 emissions. Essentially you’re looking for company-owned equipment that either combusts fuel or contains refrigerants. If you get stuck, review the accompanying training video (COMING IN APRIL). Once you identify relevant emissions sources (onsite combustion, refrigerants, company owned- vehicle, etc.), you can begin collecting relevant activity data.

Relevant Scope 1 activity data can usually be collected in the following forms (and from these TRAINING common sources): • Gallons of gasoline or diesel (fuel-purchase receipts) • Getting Started With GHG Accounting • Miles driven (travel records) (webinar) • Therms of natural gas (fuel-use records) • Understanding Your Scope 1 and 2 • Gallons of heating oil (fuel-use records) Emissions (webinar) • Kilograms of refrigerant (HVAC service provider) • Measuring Your Scope 1 and 2 Emissions With the EPA Simplified GHG Calculator When collecting activity data, be sure to pay attention to the units (both time and quantity) for the (webinar) data you gather and convert where necessary. Once you identify the appropriate contacts who • Climate Action Corps Workshop (in-person, possess the necessary data, you may want to take the opportunity to institutionalize a data collection June 2020, Denver, Colo.) system within your company to maximize the accuracy, completenes and efficiency of this process. An emissions factor is the amount of If your company opts to create an in-house spreadsheet/calculator, you will also need to look CO2e that is emitted in the use of a unit of up relevant emissions factors. (We recommend using either the GHG Protocol or U.S. EPA for fossil fuel, e.g., generating 1kWh emits X Emissions Factors.) Otherwise, the activity data you collect can be entered into GHG calculator CO2e in a given market. tools (like the EPA Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator featured under Tools) or accounting software to provide your company with an estimate of your total Scope 1 emissions.
