The Catalan tourism sector has boosted the accessibility of its services, making a reality the principle that a respectful and diverse society should recognise the equality of conditions for people with disabilities. This principle is enshrined in the “Barcelona declaration: the city and people with disabilities” that to date has been signed by 400 European cities. There are many Catalan companies and destinations that have adapted their products and services accordingly.

La versión original en español de este artículo está disponible en la página web de la revista 490 INMIGRATION, HEALTH AND DIVERSITY MANAGEMENT SUMMARY: This article presents an ongoing research project on immigration, health, and socio-cultural diversity, and offers preliminary information on the theoretical and socio-demographic context of this investigation. The objective of the project, funded by the Department of Health of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, Spain, is to analyse the socioecono- mic and cultural factors involved in health and the access to the formal health system of a few major migrant communities and ethnic minorities living in high-priority neighbou- rhoods in Catalonia. The results of this project, which will come fundamentally from ethnographic research, aim to give suggestions for improving health conditions for the population and to provide to those professionals working in the public health care system with some conceptual and practical tools for improving intercultural communication between themselves and their patients, as well as for detecting, preventing, and resolving problems in everyday practice. KEY WORDS: Immigration, Health, Socio-cultural diversity, Applied anthropology, Ethnography ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We appreciate the cooperation of Miriam Torrens, Irina Casado, Hugo Valenzuela, Óscar López, Virginia Fons, Carmen Méndez, Meritxell Saez Sellarés and, in particular, that of Lucía Sanjuán.

  • Determinants of Waste Generation Per Capita in Catalonia (North-Eastern Spain): the Role of Seasonal Population
European Journal of Sustainable Development (2016), 5, 3, 489-504 ISSN: 2239-5938 Doi: 10.14207/ejsd.2016.v5n3p489 Determinants of waste generation per capita in Catalonia (North-eastern Spain): the role of seasonal population Òscar Saladié1 Abstract Seasonal population is not taken into account in waste management policies and regional differences in waste generation per capita are magnified. Here I analyze the differences among the Catalan counties (North-eastern Spain) and I compare the results if seasonal population is added or not to the resident people. Waste generation per capita in tourist areas is overestimated and actually the differences among the counties are lower than those indicated in the official data. Only reliable data will allow determining the reasons of differences in waste generation per capita and stablishing more precise objectives in waste management policies. There is a positive correlation between municipal waste generation per capita and the services sector’s contribution to GDP, a negative correlation with the percentage of population over 64 and no correlation with income per capita. Finally, taking into account territorial factors, the lowest waste generation per capita corresponds to counties with very low population densities located in inland Catalonia. Key words: Municipal waste management, seasonal population, determinants of waste generation per capita, Catalonia 1. Introduction There are broad typologies of waste, all with varying behaviour related to environmental agents, potential evolution over time and impacts on environment and human health. The natural ecosystem’s capacity to receive and incorporate waste is limited, and exceeding it can become a serious environmental problem. Waste can be harmful to human health and animal and plant life and may also affect soil, ground water and air quality, including global warming and inadequate management can compromise the sustainability of our development.

  • TERMINOLOGY USED by CATALAN BASKET-MAKERS Dolores Soriano
TERMINOLOGY USED BY CATALAN BASKET-MAKERS Dolores Soriano 'I'he Catalan terminology for basketry is different from the Spanish terminology. The Catalan, unlike the Spanish has one special name for each part of the basket. This terminolgy was collected from the Catalan basket-makers all around Zatalonia, in different fields of basket work, during the years 1978, 1979 and 1980. The terminology and the techniques use11 now by the Catalan basket-makers are snown in this report. I. TECHNIQUES OF BASKETRY USED BY CATALAN BASKET-MAKERS. 1. Woven Technique ("Tecnica Teixida" ) . 1.1. Diagonal braiding of two directions ("Diagonal de dues direccions") . Or twilled work. - In this technique each element of the weft passes over one, two or more warp elements. Both warp and weft strands are brought together in pairs and one twined about the other. Use: to make the plaited strand of alfalfa and palmetto Geographical localization: Marseme (Tordera), Baix Ebre (Els Reguers, Beni- fallet, Alfara dels Ports), Baix ~m~ord: ('I'orroella de Montgri) and ~onsi; (~2s de Barberans) . 1.2. Diagonal weave of three directions: triangular weave ("Diagonal composta de tres directions") . The warp is made by a pair of rods, knotted to a hoop of iron with a nylon thread. Each pair is spread at a 45O angle: 'The one on the right runs downwards and the left upwards. One rod goes up spirally to the hoop of iron and is tied to the rest of the warp with a nylon thread, forming a series of triangular structures. Use: the baskets made with myrtle, rush and cane are used for fishing: basket of fish ("gambines" ) , lobster- pot ("nansa," "cistella de peix") .

  • Maresme - Montseny (250 Km)
www.grandtourcatalunya.com ITINERARY 2 MARESME - MONTSENY (250 KM) Regions: El Maresme / La Selva / Osona / El Vallès Oriental In this Itinerary you will embark on a sea and mountain trip. You will cross the region of the Maresme and then you will climb and tread the Montseny mountain range: a per- fect visual and sensorial combination of sea and mountain. It is mainly about capturing landscapes visually with a positive, genuine and primary curiosity. What is perhaps most fascinating is that despite being such a small land surface, it offers such a large diversity of marine, Mediterranean and alpine botanicals, agriculture (orchards), mountains, trails and forms of human society... 1. Blanes To see You will set off in Blanes, threshold of the Costa Brava, to start your current itinerary because it is precisely here that you will be able to easily appreciate a change of coast. To the south of Blanes is the mouth of the Tordera River and where the somehow rec- tilinear coastline begins, generally low and stretches as far as the hill of Montgat and is called The Maresme. In fact, the region of the Maresme is a geographical unit that inclu- des the pre-coastal mountain range called Montnegre and the Corridor (Natural Parks), covered with lush Mediterranean forests, and the rolling slopes that gently descend until dying in the maritime sands. You can find information about this Park in the Network of Natural Parks of Catalonia: parcs.diba.cat. Very close to the sea are the densest populations, both resident and tourist. The region of the Maresme contains a high human density (almost 400,000 inhabitants in about 400 km2) concentrated mainly in coastal populations.
