From May 1st to May 30th, there are a multitude of opportunities to show devotion to Mary. Christ the King, Our Lady of Lourdes Tri-Parishes of & St. Edith Stein While Catholics do not worship Mary, we see her as a Mediatrix. As the Mother of God, Mary has a uniqueApril and close28, relationship 2019 with our Savior, in which she can help intercede in our behalf and help us become closer to Christ. If you would like to delve further into how Jesus gave His Mother as another way to achieve sainthood and become strong disciples of Christ, here are some resources and prayers below: Resources St. Louis de Montfort’s Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is a classic, as well as his book True Devotion to Mary. He was the saint that established the framework to consecrate oneself to Mary so to become closer to Christ. Fr. Michael Gaitley’s 33 Days to Morning Glory is what one would call a modern take on de Montfort’s work. Another resource to guide people in becoming consecrated to Mary, over a million copies have been sold. He also has a wonderful retreat through the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy called the Mercy & Mary Retreat, going into his faith journey and how Mary works within Jesus’s plan to spread His Mercy, love, and grace to all. Fr. Donald Calloway’s Champions of the Rosary is a thorough analysis of the history of the Rosary, its significance, and why we must pray it in our modern times. If you would really like to dive into what made the Rosary into what it is today, this book is an excellent resource. www.marian.org: The official website for the Marians at the National Shrine of Divine Mercy at Stockbridge, MA. Not only do the Marians dedicate their lives to spreading the work of Divine Mercy, their order has a significant devotion to Mary. They allow laity to join them through becoming Marian Helpers. There are three prayer clubs, one of them being the Thirteenth of the Month Club, which focuses on Mary. The Marians also have a Mary app (as well as a Divine Mercy app) that details numerous Marian apparitions, prayers, and the history behind Mary’s prominence in the Catholic Church. Prayers & Devotions May 4th: Start a novena for Our Lady of Fatima The Rosary: A classic Marian devotion that you can do via an app, rosary beads, or even in your head! Seven Sorrows of Mary: A lesser known, but still quite important Marian devotion, Our Lady of Kibeho mentioned to the 3 school girls in Rwanda before the genocide that if people were to pray the Seven Sorrows of Mary chaplet devoutly, the violence, hatred, and chaos that would engulf Rwanda would be avoided. However, people did not heed Marys’ warning. Yet good still came out of such tragedy, since the Vatican recognized the apparitions at Kibeho, Rwanda, thus becoming the first Marian apparition approved by the Vatican on the continent of Africa. This led to the Seven Sorrows of Mary devotion to become more known, as people learned what Mary told the children in Kibeho. You can read more about the revelations in the book by Immaculee Ilibagiza called Our Lady of Kibeho: Mary Speaks to the World from the Heart of Africa. Mrs. Ilibagiza also wrote a wonderful book on how the Rosary saved her life and other survivors during the Rwandan genocide in Left to Tell. First Five Saturday Devotions: Brought up during the apparitions in Fatima, Mary mentioned the need for Catholics to make reparations for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary by observing the First Five Saturdays Devotion. This is to make reparations for the five offenses and blasphemies against Mary. The requirements are that on the first Saturday of the month: 1. Go to confession on Saturday or on the day closest to Saturday. 2. Pray the Rosary. 3. Attend Mass with the intention of making reparations to Our Lady. 4. Meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary, which can be done through meditation on the Stations of the Cross, reading Scripture and meditations based on the Rosary mystery of the day, or even taking a specific mystery and using lectio divina to guide you. Don’t forget also the First Five Fridays for also the reparations to the Sacred Heart of Jesus!
