The Ministry of Women in the New Testament Reclaiming the Biblical Vision for Church Leadership Dorothy A. Lee

In this book, Dorothy Lee considers evidence from the New Testament and early church to show that women’s ministry is confirmed by the biblical witness. Her comprehensive exam- ination explores the roles women play in the Gospels and the Pauline corpus, with a particular focus on passages that have been used in the past to limit women’s ministry. Lee argues that women in the New Testament are not only valued as disciples but also given leadership roles, which has implications for the contemporary church. In addition, she points to evidence from early church history that reveals women’s participation in ministry and outlines key theological arguments for women as full and equal partners with men in the life of the church. The Ministry of Women in the New Testament will be a valuable resource for professors, students, and scholars of the New Testa- ment, ministry, and women’s studies.

The God of the Old Testament Encountering the Divine in Christian Scripture R. W. L. Moberly

Old Testament theologian Walter Moberly is known for his cre- ative, accessible, and provocative writing. This book, written in a similar vein as his well-received Old Testament Theology, combines biblical criticism with constructive theology and engages both Jewish and Christian interpretations. It demonstrates how to read the Old Testament in ways that are academically rigorous and that also contribute to its use in contemporary Christian thought and practice. Moberly offers robust readings of eight pivotal Old Testament passages that unpack the nature of God in Christian Scripture. These passages form some of the basic “grammar” of the Bible’s portrayal of God and humanity. Suitable as a supplementary text for Old Testament theology and interpretation courses, this book presents a Christian approach to reading the Old Testament that holds together the priorities of both scholarship and faith.

ENDORSEMENTS “There simply is no better close reader than Walter Moberly. In any generation there may be no more than a few scholars of R. W. L. An Unconventional God The Spirit according to Jesus Jack Levison

Jack Levison offers a fresh take on the Holy Spirit through a careful reading of every reference to the Spirit in the Gospels. Viewed through the lens of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection, the Spirit shows up at odd times and in odd teachings—in desert sojourns, a strange saying about scorpions and snakes, and puzzling sayings about birth from above and springs from below. The Gospels disclose an alien world of the Spirit, a world that mystifies, challenges, and invigorates. Grounded in scholarship, yet accessible and inviting, this companion volume to Levison’s A Boundless God analyzes key aspects of Jesus’s experience of the Holy Spirit, offering nuggets of insight on every page.

God’s Messiah in the Old Testament Expectations of a Coming King Andrew T. Abernethy and Gregory Goswell

Christians who open the Old Testament expecting to find prom- ises of a royal Messiah on every page often end up perplexed. Where is the Messiah and how does he fit within the wider vision of the Old Testament and its books? This volume offers a fresh, comprehensive treatment of the Messiah theme throughout the entire Old Testament and exam- ines its relevance for New Testament interpretation. The authors explore what the Old Testament actually says about the Messiah, divine kingship, and the kingdom of God. They also offer a nu- anced understanding of how New Testament authors make use of Old Testament messianic texts in explaining who Jesus is and what he came to do. The result is a multifaceted, panoramic view of God’s intention to involve a royal Messiah in the establishment of his kingdom.

Introducing the Pseudepigrapha of Second Temple Judaism Message, Context, and Significance Daniel M. Gurtner Foreword by Loren T. Stuckenbruck

This book introduces readers to a much-neglected and misun- derstood assortment of Jewish writings from around the time of the New Testament. Dispelling mistaken notions of “falsely attributed writings” that are commonly inferred from the desig- nation “pseudepigrapha,” Daniel Gurtner demonstrates the rich indebtedness these works exhibit to the traditions and scriptures of Israel’s past. In surveying many of the most important works, Introducing the Pseudepigrapha of Second Temple Judaism shows how the pseudepigrapha are best appreciated in their own varied contexts rather than as mere “background” to early Christianity or emerging rabbinic Judaism.

FROM THE FOREWORD “Gurtner has selected for discussion some of the most influ- ential Jewish pseudepigrapha. Drawing on the Reformed exegetical and theological vision of John Webster, Michael Allen here presents the fruit of his patient listening to the apostolic witness, and it is nourishing fruit indeed.” —Wesley Hill, Trinity School for Ministry “Ephesians by Michael Allen is a model of theological com- mentary. From Christ to Christianity How the Jesus Movement Became the Church in Less Than a Century James R. Edwards

How did the movement founded by Jesus transform more in the first seventy-five years after his death than it has in the two thousand years since? From Christ to Christianity offers an informative and understand- able summary of the development of Christianity in the New Testament and post-Apostolic eras. James Edwards tells the story of how the Christian movement—which began as relatively infor- mal, rural, Hebrew and Aramaic speaking, and closely anchored to the Jewish synagogue—became primarily urban, Greek speak- ing, and gentile within the first Christian generation, spreading through the Greco-Roman world with a mission agenda and church organization distinct from its roots in Jewish Galilee. This book not only demonstrates how, by the early second cen- tury, the church attained the characteristic qualities to become the Christian church as we generally know it today but also shows how the witness of the early church can encourage today’s church. It also includes several maps.

Enjoying the Bible Literary Approaches to Loving the Scriptures Matthew Mullins

Many Christians view the Bible as an instruction manual. While the Bible does provide instruction, it can also captivate, comfort, delight, shock, and inspire. In short, it elicits emotion—just like poetry. By learning to read and love poetry, says literature professor Mat- thew Mullins, we can increase our understanding of the biblical text and learn to love God’s Word more. When we learn how to read poetry well and for pleasure, we can cultivate new habits and motivations that reshape how we read the Scriptures. Enjoying the Bible will be of interest to professors and students in Bible, hermeneutics, and literature classes. It will also serve as a resource for homeschool, church, parachurch, classical school, and youth ministry settings. Each chapter includes exercises and questions designed to help readers put the book’s principles and practices into action.

Going Deeper with Grammar Participles in Narrative In chapter 7 we discussed the use of the irreal Imperfect, irreal Perfect, and the participle to express habitual events. The other central function of the participle in narrative discourse is to express events that are ongoing or progressive at the point or time of their description. As with all predicatively used participles, as a progressive predicate the participle is the complement of an overt or (more often) null copula. Often the purpose of using a progressive participle in narrative is to express over- lapping events. That is, another event occurs during the time that the progressive event is happening. In the following example, Laban comes to the spring at the time when the servant of Abraham is standing beside the camels and the spring.

The Need for Creeds Today Confessional Faith in a Faithless Age J. V. Fesko

This brief, accessible invitation to the historic creeds and con- fessions makes a biblical and historical case for their necessity and shows why they are essential for Christian faith and practice today. J. V. Fesko, a leading Reformed theologian with a broad reader- ship in the academy and the church, demonstrates that creeds are not just any human documents but biblically commended resources for the well-being of the church, as long as they remain subordinate to biblical authority. Fesko also explains how the current skepticism and even hostility toward creeds and confes- sions came about. Professors and students in courses on Reformed theology, church history, and Reformed confessions will value this work. It will also be of interest to pastors and lay readers in confessional Reformed churches.

Church Conflicts The Cross, Apocalyptic, and Political Resistance Ernst Käsemann; Ry O. Siggelkow, editor; Roy A. Harrisville, translator Foreword by James H. Cone

This important work by one of the most significant New Testa- ment scholars of the modern period, now available in English for the first time, explores the significance of Christian apocalyptic for the church in times of conflict and crisis. Written in the wake of the German student movements of 1967/68 and attentive to global freedom movements in the Third World, this volume passionately articulates a radical apocalyptic theology of liberation and engages with global social and polit- ical realities that are still very much with us. Ernst Käsemann offers a theological indictment of global white supremacy, capi- talism, and militarism, calling the church to become a resistance movement on earth.

The Innovative Church How Leaders and Their Congregations Can Adapt in an Ever-Changing World Scott Cormode

This book offers church leaders innovative ways to express the never-changing gospel to their ever-changing congregations. It has been road-tested with over one hundred churches through the Fuller Youth Institute and includes five questions that guide Christian leaders who wish to innovate.

EXCERPT Almost everything about the current experience of church was established in a bygone era: the way we worship, the passages of Scripture we cherish, and the people we expect to see. The basic contours of church have not changed, even as the world has been transformed. The church as we know it is calibrated for a world that no longer exists. . . . How do we Christians innovate when our credibility depends on continuity with the past and honoring tradition? To put it another way, How do we maintain a rock-solid commitment to the unchanging Christian faith while at the same time finding innovative ways to express that faith in an ever-changing culture? . . . We can do that using the dual standard of people and practices—that is, according to the longings and Scott Cormode (PhD, Yale University) is the losses of the ever-changing people entrusted to our care and Hugh De Pree Professor of Leadership Devel- according to the practices that constitute the never-changing I opment at Fuller Theological Seminary. Models of Evangelism Priscilla Pope-Levison

Many sincere Christians dismiss evangelism due to enduring evangelistic caricatures. This book helps readers move beyond those caricatures to consider thoughtfully and practically how they can engage in evangelism, whether it’s through one-on- one conversations, social media, social justice, or the liturgy of worship services. This book offers an engaging, well-researched, and well-organized presentation and analysis of eight models of evangelism. Covering a breadth of approaches—from personal evangelism to media evangelism and everything in between—it encourages readers to take a deeper look at evangelism and discover a model that captures their attention. Each chapter introduces and assesses a model biblically, theologically, historically, and practically, allow- ing for easy comparison across the board. The book also includes end-of-chapter study questions to further help readers interact with each model.

Understanding Faith Formation Theological, Congregational, and Global Dimensions Mark A. Maddix, Jonathan H. Kim, and James Riley Estep Jr.

Three leading Christian educators offer a survey of faith forma- tion from various perspectives: biblical, theological, pastoral, practical, and global. The authors present a biblical theology of faith formation for individual and congregational life and show how faith can be formed through the life and mission of the local church through practices such as communal worship, Bible study, and mission. They also explore the faces of faith formation in multicultural and global contexts. Work and Worship Reconnecting Our Labor and Liturgy Matthew Kaemingk and Cory B. Willson Foreword by Nicholas Wolterstorff

The chasm between work and worship has a devastating effect on the health, vibrancy, and effectiveness of both our labor and our liturgy. Drawing on years of ministry, teaching, and leadership expe- rience, Matthew Kaemingk and Cory Willson explain that our Sunday worship and our Monday work desperately need to inform and impact each other. They engage in a rich biblical, theological, and historical exploration of the deep connections between worship and work, showing Christian leaders how to help people practice the presence of God in and through their daily work.

ENDORSEMENTS “Here, finally, is the book that will take the ‘faith and work’ conversation to new depths of intentionality. This should become a standard textbook, for the sake of the church and for the sake of the world.”—James K. A. The Congregation in a Secular Age Keeping Sacred Time against the Speed of Modern Life Andrew Root MINISTRY IN A SECULAR AGE

In this culmination of his well-received Ministry in a Secular Age trilogy, Andrew Root offers a new paradigm for understanding the congregation in contemporary ministry. He articulates why it is so hard for congregations to change and encourages an ap- proach that doesn’t fall into the negative traps of our secular age. Living in late modernity means our lives are constantly acceler- ated, and calls for change in the church often support this call to speed up. Root asserts that the recent push toward innovation in churches has led to an acceleration of congregational life that strips the sacred out of time. Many congregations are simply un- able to keep up, which leads to burnout and depression. When things move too fast, we feel alienated from life and the voice of a living God. The Congregation in a Secular Age calls congregations to reimagine what change is and how to live into this future, helping them move from relevance to resonance.

Can We Still Believe in God? Answering Ten Contemporary Challenges to Christianity Craig L. Blomberg

Skeptics of Christianity often ask Craig Blomberg how he can believe in a faith that seems so problematic. How can God allow evil and suffering? Isn’t the Bible anti-women, anti-gay, and proslavery? Isn’t the New Testament riddled with contradictions? What about the nature of hell, violence in Scripture, and prayer and predestination? Following Blomberg’s popular Can We Still Believe the Bible?, this succinct and readable book focuses on what the New Testament teaches about ten key reasons people give for not believing in God.

Jesus the Great Philosopher Rediscovering the Wisdom Needed for the Good Life Jonathan T. Pennington

Jesus the Great Philosopher explores how Jesus, the Bible, and Christianity can become more than a compartmentalized part of our lives. It argues that we need to recover the lost biblical image of Jesus as the one true philosopher who teaches us how to experience the fullness of our humanity in the kingdom of God. Following Jesus in a Culture of Fear Choosing Trust over Safety in an Anxious Age, rev. and updated ed. Scott Bader-Saye

This timely resource explores the corruptive role fear plays in our cultural and political conversations, offering practices that embody Jesus’s call to place our trust in him and to show hospi- tality to our neighbors. This edition has been revised through- out, updated to connect with today’s readers, and includes new discussion questions.

The End of the Christian Life How Embracing Our Mortality Frees Us to Truly Live J. Todd Billings

We’re all going to die. Yet in our medically advanced, technologi- cal age, many of us see death as a distant reality—something that happens only at the end of a long life or to other people. In The End of the Christian Life, Todd Billings urges Christians to resist that view. Instead, he calls us to embrace our mortality in our daily life and faith. This is the journey of genuine disci- pleship, Billings says: following the crucified and resurrected Lord in a world of distraction and false hopes. Drawing on his experience as a professor and father living with incurable cancer, Billings artfully weaves rich theology with powerful narrative to offer a personal yet deeply theological account of the gospel’s expansive hope for small, mortal creatures.

ENDORSEMENTS “Todd Billings is one of my favorite theologians. The End of the Christian Life highlights many of the reasons why. Redeeming Power Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church Diane Langberg

Power has a God-given role in human relationships and insti- tutions, but it can lead to abuse when used in unhealthy ways. Speaking into current #MeToo and #ChurchToo conversations, this book shows that the body of Christ desperately needs to understand the forms power takes, how it is abused, and how to respond to abuses of power. Although many Christians want to prevent abuse in their churches and organizations, they lack a deep and clear-eyed understanding of how power actually works. Diane Langberg offers a clinical and theological framework for understanding how power operates, the effects of the abuse of power, and how power can be redeemed and restored to its proper God-given place in relationships and institutions. Langberg not only helps Christian leaders identify and resist abusive systems but also shows how they can use power to protect the vulnerable in their midst.

Becoming Brave Finding the Courage to Pursue Racial Justice Now Brenda Salter McNeil Foreword by Austin Channing Brown

Brenda Salter McNeil offers a distinctly Christian framework for addressing systemic injustice, inspiring readers to challenge the status quo in racial reconciliation. The True Story of the Whole World Finding Your Place in the Biblical Drama, rev. ed. Michael W. Goheen and Craig G. Bartholomew

The True Story of the Whole World provides an overview of the grand narrative of the Bible, showing how God’s action in the world gives meaning to our lives and provides us with a founda- tion for our actions. The authors’ popular textbook, The Drama of Scripture, pre- sented this message for a student audience. It was then abridged and published at a more popular level as The True Story of the Whole World. This revised edition has been further updated and streamlined throughout to appeal more specifically to church readers and small groups. It includes contemporary reflection sections and discussion questions for individual or group use in each chapter.

Why Science and Faith Need Each Other Eight Shared Values That Move Us beyond Fear Elaine Howard Ecklund

Using new research to reveal how faith and science illuminate universal truths about the human experience, this book shows readers they don’t have to choose between Christian belief and science. In the areas most rife with conflict—the origins of the universe, evolution, climate change, and genetic technology— readers will find fascinating points of convergence in eight virtues of human existence: curiosity, doubt, humility, creativity, healing, awe, shalom, and gratitude. Praying with Our Feet Pursuing Justice and Healing on the Streets Lindsey Krinks

At age twenty, Lindsey Krinks was on track to lead an upwardly mobile life. But a devastating injury and an unexpected encounter with a homeless orga- nizing group disrupted her plans and opened her eyes to the immense suffer- ing around her. Our network consists of educators, researchers, directors of educational institutions, pastors, denomi- national leaders, NGO leaders and FBOs, authors, lecturers, and students. Our virtual bookstore contains a collection of Hispanic-focused titles and book series written by Hispanic scholars and theologians. We invite you to get more information about us and to join our network of committed members. Join and be part of those who make the change through relevant and excellent theological education!
