MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING

0213 RESOLVED: That the minutes of the previous meeting held on Thursday 21 May 2020 be approved as a correct account.

0214 MATTERS ARISING There were no matters arising that would not be covered by the agenda for the meeting.

The Chair welcomed the group to the meeting and colleagues introduced themselves.

0215 PRIMARY TRANSITION The Chair reported that the work pack had been reviewed and updated over half term and then shared with members of the senior team for consideration. Following agreement, the document had been circulated to secondary Headteachers across the City. The Chair asked colleagues to consider the work pack following the meeting. The Chair advised that she had spoken to Dr Rob Hart and shared the minutes of the previous meeting with him. Dr Hart fed back that the LA were encouraged by Secondary Headteacher’s agreement in principle to a co-ordinated approach to transition and by the work pack that colleagues were considering. Dr Hart explained that a number of working transition groups were meeting with the LA. Dr Hart reported that the LA acknowledged the challenge of planning in advance due to the changing situation. Dr Hart gave an overview of pupil attendance at primary schools during the current week. A further meeting would be held on Friday with Ms Newbold and Mr Leivers, the new head of school improvement where it was hoped that further discussion around transition arrangements would be had. The Chair advised that work packs been circulated earlier that day and suggested that colleagues may not yet had opportunity to consider the documents. It was noted that it had been suggested that schools purchase the book Wonder for their students. The Chair suggested that it may be possible to claim the cost of the book from DfE (as part of costs incurred due to circumstances surrounding lockdown) or specific schools, that may experience financial difficulty, could approach the LA or ConnectEd for support. The Chair gave an overview of the activities within the work pack and advised that subject specific resources were also available to colleagues. The Chair asked colleagues how the programme could be made more engaging for students and suggested that people be invited to read chapters of the book and share these online. There was particular interest in approaching local celebrities to support this. The Chair asked Dr Hart to ask the LA to support this through appropriate social media platforms. The Chair also asked whether the LA could investigate the possibility of streaming the film of Wonder for Y6 pupils to access by week three. Colleagues agreed that it would be beneficial to make pupils feel that they were taking part in something bigger and get a sense of a city wide activity. Dr Hart agreed to take queries regarding social media promotion, enlisting readers and the possibility of streaming the film back to colleagues at the LA. Mr Ludlow reiterated that a citywide approach would have benefits for pupils. Mr Ludlow thanked the Chair for the work pack which he had received very positively. Mr Ludlow agreed that high profile readers would be a positive addition to the programme. Mrs Hazeldine considered that the work pack was an excellent resource and thanked the Chair and her team for sharing. Mrs Hazeldine considered that the work pack was challenging and yet accessible for all students. Mr Otero received the work pack with thanks and advised that Colton Hills would be using it with their pupils. Dr Hart questioned whether Y7 leads had attended the KS2 into KS3 curriculum meetings and whether the transition work pack had been considered. The Chair considered that Y7 leads had been focusing on the gap learning in Y7 in September 2020 rather than on transition work that was accessible at home. Mrs Hazeldine advised that the KS2 into KS3 meeting had considered baseline testing in September. The Chair considered that if schools were going to use the Wonder work pack they would need to purchase the book fairly quickly and Dr Hart suggested that primaries may be able to provide some copies for pupils. Mr Tate was encouraged by the generally positive response received regarding the work pack but questioned whether primaries needed to be informed of any schools that would not be using the resource. The Chair stressed that primary Headteachers had requested a consistent approach to transition but that colleagues could not be made to use the resource. Colleagues that were concerned about using the pack due to financial constraint were encouraged to contact the clerk. Colleagues agreed to inform the clerk of whether they intended to use the work pack following the meeting. The Chair encouraged colleagues to forward any queries regarding the work pack to herself directly. Dr Hart advised that he would approach Mark Smith to provide support for the programme, its publicity and to recruit possible readers.

0216 Y10 AND Y12 ARRANGEMENTS The Chair asked colleagues to share any concerns or interesting ideas following the recent government advice. Mr Ludlow noted the increase in offers for free hand sanitiser and signage and the Chair warned colleagues about a scam regarding PPE which was circulating.

Dr Hart questioned whether secondary schools had received more students following the easing of lockdown. A number of colleagues reported an increase in the number of students attending but advised that these were children of key workers and the opening of primary schools had had a particular impact.

0217 RECOVERY CURRICULUM The Chair gave a recap of the aim of the Recovery Curriculum and suggested that a sub group meet to consider how this could be moved forward. The group agreed that it would be an opportunity for deputies to work together. Mr Ludlow agreed to lead this with support from his deputy, Mr Sutton. Mr Ludlow agreed to arrange a meeting of three or four headteachers to consider the remit of the group. Colleagues were encouraged to send contact information for relevant deputies to the clerk if they had not already done so.

0218 ANY OTHER BUSINESS There were no further items for consideration.
