    Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

    Dr. Alma Martinez Diversity in America: The Representation of People of Color in the Media STATEMENT I am Dr. Alma Martinez. I am an American film, television and stage actor and, as well, a university professor and published author. I hold a PhD in Drama from Stanford University, a MFA in Acting from the University of Southern California, and am a Dartmouth College Cesar Chavez Dissertation Fellow alum, a Fulbright Scholar, and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Actors Branch (AMPAS). My induction into AMPAS reflects my extensive body of work in the films Zoot Suit, Under Fire, Barbarosa, Born in East LA, Cake, Transpecos, Crossing Over, Ms. Purple, Clemency and in TV programs such as Gentefied, Undone, Queen Sugar, The Bridge, American Crime Story: People vs OJ, Elena of Avalor, The Terror Infamy, Corridos Tales of Passion and Revolution among others. I have acted on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in regional theatres across the country and on Mexican and European stages. To intelligent women I would say things like: ‘What you call love was invented by guys like me to sell Nylons’. Then I would order another Martini and ask the black waiter about his life just because no‐one else will for another decade or so. I’d direct my cynicism at the post‐war domestic idyll, but also at the beatniks who believed just as naively in its opposite. The protagonist of Mad Men, Don Draper (Jon Hamm), isn’t a time‐traveller but he is a man ahead of his time, created with a twenty‐first century viewpoint. He shows us both how far we have come in five decades and how far we haven’t. ‘Mad Men’ is a term coined by the advertising executives and copy‐writers of Madison Avenue to describe themselves.
