recent scholarship Faculty of the JSU faculty Trends 2007–2008 Jacksonville State University is the largest concentration of “brain power” in northeast Alabama. Our University represents the greatest concentra- Fromtion of faculty and staffthe who hold the President…highest academic credential in their individual disciplines. This “cognitive complex” of experts is one reason why our university has achieved more accreditations in academic disci- plines than any other regional university in Alabama.

This first edition of Faculty Trends is what we hope will be an an- nual review which highlights our faculty’s academic research, publications, presentations, performances, and service to our community. This is our opportunity to showcase the breadth and depth of faculty interest and accomplishment. Through research, scholarship, and service, our faculty not only advance knowledge and keep current in their disciplines, but also improve teaching and the experience of our students who are involved in research and service.

We are proud of our faculty and want to share their accomplish- ments with our friends and alumni. We encourage you to identify your own interests within this listing of expertise and engage in the excellence that is Jacksonville State University.

Sincerely,

William A. Meehan, Ed.D. President From the Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs…At Jacksonville State University, academic research and scholarship are among our top pri- orities, and thanks to an outstanding faculty, this university is becoming continually more well-known in those areas. In this inaugural issue of Faculty Trends, we are proud to honor our faculty’s recent scholastic accomplishments.

Our faculty is engaging in a high level of scholarship. As the only Alabama regional university to support Fulbright Scholars in the past two academic years, JSU is continuing to set the bar high for other universities of comparable size. In that same time period, Auburn University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, two of our state’s research institutions, sup- ported an equal number of two Fulbright scholars.

Each year, I have the privilege of reading through hundreds of pages of faculty portfolios, which include examples of the publications, presentations and performances they participate in throughout the year — and each year, I am impressed. Though I am no longer in the classroom, I aim to continue maintaining a high level of scholarship. As you turn the pages of this publication, I know you will be as impressed as I am by the way our faculty also recognizes the importance of continu- ing to make contributions to higher education through scholarly activities.

Dr. Rebecca Turner

We are pleased to present this first issue of Faculty Trends. Its publication highlights recent scholarship of the Jacksonville State University faculty. The record of that scholarship was de- rivedFrom from two sources: the the quarterly Editor… reports of the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs to the Board of Trustees, which is a compilation of faculty activities provided by deans and department heads; and the individual faculty members’ applications for Faculty Research Awards presented at the spring Faculty Awards Ceremony.

Faculty Trends also recognizes JSU’s Fulbright Scholars, successful applicants for external grants and contracts, and the recipients of the Earlon and Betty McWhorter Outstanding Teacher Award, the Cleo and Carla Thomas Community Education and Service Award, the Faculty Scholar Lecture Award, and the Ray and Ruth Ringer Faculty Award.

Many hands were involved in publishing Faculty Trends. Thanks to Bethany Harbison for interviewing and profiling faculty award recipients, Joe Delap and Lynn Varcak for help with the content, Erin Hill for design and layout, Mary Smith and Graham Lewis for production, Steve Latham and Angie Finley for photography, and Tim Garner for his marketing expertise and good advice throughout this project. Special thanks go to Dr. Rebecca Turner, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, who funded and supported Faculty Trends from its inception through publication.

We are proud of our faculty and their accomplishments. We hope this publication encourages further achievement and becomes an annual recognition of the JSU faculty.

“I went straight from living in the dorm to teaching at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,” Dr. Hill said. Af- ter a three-year tenure there, she went on to teach at Kent State University, Illinois State University, Indiana University South- east, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of West Florida, Frostburg State University, Auburn University, and now JSU — for a total of nine universities in 33 years.

“I learned a lot about packing,” Dr. Hill noted. “One thing that drastically impacts my work is the fact that I don’t want my students to struggle like I’ve struggled. I care about the students learning and developing skills that will enable them to be suc- cessful in their jobs.”

She explained that the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has opened up a new world of job opportunities for stu- dents in a variety of majors.

“GIS jobs are out there, and we have an excellent reputation for putting great students out there,” Dr. Hill said. “I frequently get employers begging me for more of our students.”

While her classes are rigorous, Dr. Hill strives to make the learning process interactive. She began her career as an elementary school teacher and then decided to obtain her M.A. in Counseling from Jacksonville State University. With that, she started counseling and eventu- ally became Supervisor of Elementary Guidance Counselors for Anniston City Schools. Mrs. Sudduth then became an adjunct instructor for JSU’s education program — a position that eventually prompted Dean Cynthia Harper to ask her to join the College of Education and Professional Studies as a full-time instructor. Mrs. Sudduth agreed, and she has worked in that capacity for the past 15 years. “Now I am teaching teachers, and I feel that I have even more of an impact,” she said. “I try to let them know that teaching is a ministry and a calling. You have to be special to be in the classroom.”

Mrs. Sudduth said she encourages her students to realize that the teaching profession is not for everyone. Every year, she explained, students come through the education program with the intent of becoming a teacher — only to discover that, once they begin their practicum, teaching is not for them. “If you don’t enjoy working with kids, you’ll know it, and those kids will too,” Mrs. Sudduth said.

3 Faculty Scholar Lecture Award

After five years of teaching as an adjunct in the JSU College of Commerce and Business Administration, Dr. Landry joined the CCBA faculty as an assistant professor of finance in 2006. Though he now stands at the front of the classroom instead of occupying a desk, his love for studying, learning and research has not dimmed. “I like doing it,” Dr. Landry said. “I don’t consider it a chore. It’s not a chore or a job to me.”

Every day, Dr. Landry conducts research by reading articles involving his current topics of interest, monitoring bankruptcy filings and developments, and studying the findings of his scholars so that he can pinpoint the areas in need of further ex- amination. Dr. Landry said that while they are varied, all of his educational and work backgrounds “fit together.” Dr. Landry’s time as a lawyer fueled his interest in bankruptcy, provided him with contacts that now aid in his research, and gave him a great deal of life experience, which adds color to his classroom lec- tures. His doctorate schooled him in the intricacies of research and writing for professional publications.

Dr. Landry’s work has been included in numerous scholarly publications, such as the Policy Studies Journal, and Municipal Finance Journal. Many of his articles focus on different aspects of one topic — bankruptcy. “I find bankruptcy interesting, and I find that many in academics and outside do not understand the vital role that bankruptcy plays in our economy,” Dr. Lan- dry said. “Filing bankruptcy is not bad in and of itself. He earned his Mas- ter of Computer Science and Ph.D. from New Tech and soon began teaching at Kansas Wesleyan University. Though he found the people of Kansas to be friendly, the state’s chilly winters were too much for Dr. Francia, who was born and raised in the tropical Philippine Islands.

In 1994, Dr. Francia joined the department of Mathematical, Computer, and Informational Sciences at Jacksonville State University. He was one of five national recipients of a Microsoft Award in Innovation in Higher Education in 1996. He credits much of his teaching philosophy to Chickering and Gamson's Seven Principles for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education. That work emphasizes the importance of elements such as faculty and student interaction, peer collaboration, and active learning.

Dr. Francia has adopted an open-door policy. He has office hours posted, but his students know that any time he is working and his door is open, they are welcome to knock and go on in.
