4 2. THE WEATHER IN ONTARIO IN 1987

March - The fine weather trend of February continued into March with mild tempera tures, light precipitation and abundant sunshine. In southern and central Ontario it was the warmest March since 1977 and the warmest in northern Ontario since 1981. In northwestern Ontario it was the fourth consecutive month with above normal tem- peratures. On March 8th temperatures reached as high as 20 oC in southern Ontario. The amounts of sunshine were generally above normal. Precipitation was below normal except in the east. However, up to 25 cm of snow fell on the south on March 31st.

April - April was the fifth consecutive month of mild sunny weather across the pro vince. Many daily and monthly warm temperature records were established, primarily in central, northern and northwestern Ontario. Itowas the warmest April ever recor ded at Kenora, where the mean temperature was 7 C above normal. Precipitation was generally low, but southern Ontario received 20-30 cm of snow on April 1st.

May - May was warmer and drier than normal throughout Ontario. Departures from nor o mal temperatures were in the order of plus 1 to 2 C. In southern Ontario it was the warmest May since 1982. At Toronto & Sarnia it was the warmest May since 1977. o Temperatures climbed above 30 C on several occasions during the last week of the month. Precipitation was generally lighter than normal and most accumulations occurred during the last week of the month.

June - Summer arrived early this year with mean June temperatures averaging about two degrees above the normal over most of Ontario. It was the seventh consecutive warm month. Daily maximum temperatures in southern Ontario were above 300 C on seven days in June. Anomalous patterns of precipitation resembled a patchwork quilt. Much of the heavier rainfall was the result of thunderstorms and torrential downpours which occurred on several days during the month.

July - July was hot and one of the warmest months in recent history, bringing back memories of the heat waves of the 40's and 50's. Also, July was the 8th consecutive month with above normal temperatures across Ontario. Southern Ontario had the highest mean temperature for any July since 1955. The maximum temperatures topped 30 C on fourteen occasions in Toronto, the greatest number since 1921. For nor thern Ontario, it was the warmest July since 1983. Precipitation was heavy, with Timmins recording the wettest July since 1968. However, in southern and central Ontario it was dry, with precipitation from 30 to 80% of normal.

August - The remarkable run of eight consecut~ve months of above normal tempera tures ended with readings falling 0.1 to 0.7 C below normal in most of the pro vince. Rainfall ranged from 20 to 75% above normal across most regions. Moosonee had the wettest August since 1975. However, eastern Ontario, the Muskoka to Sudbury areas, as well as Toronto, were drier than normal by some 10 to 60%.

September - It was generally cloudy & rainy in southern Ontario while drier weather prevailed in central and northern Ontario. Record daily minimum temperatures were set throughout the province on the morning of the 3rd, and on the 23rd the passage of a cold front brought frost to northern and eastern regions. In southern Ontario, the mean monthly temperatures at several locations, including Toronto, were below normal. Southern Ontario received above normal rainfall. There were two occurrences of severe weather. On the 12th, 100 mm of rain fell in 24 h near Windsor. On the 13th one person was hit by lightning in Toronto and another in Orillia.

•.11'he ltarner Blue. Frosted Elfin IIIId Basted Skipper in Ontario by Q.F. Hess. a) Karner Blue (Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov)

Dr. Laurence Packer carried out field work in 1986, mainly at the Pinery locations but with some also at the St. Williams locality. His research findings are contained in his report - "A Status Report on the Karner Blue Butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabokov)" . This was prepared for the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and on page 54 of the report, he it is proposed that the status for the Karner Blue is ENDANGERED. On page 3, Dr. Packer indicates that further research is required on the following: i) Ant/larval interactions - to determine which ant species best defends the larva, the magnitude of increased larval survival as a result of ant atten dance and the habitat requirements of the ants themselves. Formica species often obtain up to 95 % of their total food from tree aphids and clearly the main food source in Lambton county should be determined to ensure that management plans do not reduce ant populations. ii) Conditions required for successful lupine growth - for which a field ex periment is suggested.

He goes on to propose the following management plans (page 4): i) Both the St. Williams and Lambton County sites should be purchased (1), or possibly leased, and actively managed for the butterfly. This will involve the setting of small fires (or the employment of other methods of clearance) to promote Lupine growth.

6 ii) A network of suitable habitat should be constructed within the Pinery Provin cial Park. The butterfly should be introduced only after Lupine and ant popu lations have been increased. Ageing female butterflies should be introduced from healthy populations nearby. iii) The wild populations of the Karner Blue should be monitored. If they are threatened with immediate destruction, as a result of development, the butterflies or their larvae should be transferred to suitable sites within the Pinery. However, it is suggested that several years of management be undertaken in the latter site before transfer takes place.

The 1987 field data which follows was submitted by Ben and Brenda Kulon, Bill Lamond, Kevin McKaughlin and Q.F. Hess: a) St. Williams locality:

May 5 - 1 male adult (dwarfed)(QFH). Wild Lupine leaflets about half full size. June 14 - 1 adult (WL + KM). June 16 - Nil (QFH). Few blooms on Wild Lupine; flowers with green seed pods on a few plants - mostly in 50 % shade situations (see photo). July 18 - Nil (QFH). A few Lupine with green leaflets and some with yellow leaflets.

The status of this Karner Blue colony appears to be very precarious. In 1986, Dr. Packer observed a maximum of seven individuals in the second brood. He states that the extirpation of the St. Williams population must be considered to be imminent (see page vii of his report). b) Pinery localities:

May 6 - Port Franks Estates, Yogi Bear, Provo Park - all nil. May 20 - Yogi Bear (Bowl) - 4 males, Yogi Bear (Dune) - nil (QFH); Yogi Bear (Dune) - 20 (no larvae)(BBK). Lupine in bloom. May 24 - Yogi Bear - 40 (3 pairs in copula) (BBK). June 11 - Yogi Bear - 1 male (QFH). Lupine not in bloom. July 9 - Port Franks Estates - 2 males (QFH). July 19 - Port Franks Estates - 25; Yogi Bear (Bowl) - 6 (BBK). July 23 - Yogi Bear (Bowl) - 15 (BBK).

Note 1: Lambton Wildlife Incorporated has decided to proceed with the purchase of the main part of the Yogi Bear Karner Blue locality to be finalized in early 1988.

Note 2: A preliminary field research project was conducted by Dr. Dale F. Schweitzer in the Pinery and, to a much lesser extent, at the St. Williams locality, in the period July 20 - 31 inclusive, 1984. Please refer to "A Report on the Status of the Karner Blue in the Province of Ontario" - prepared for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Lambton Wildlife Incorporated.

7 Dr. Laurence Packer in his report (Table 1, page 20), gives a population summary as follows:

T.E.A. Occasional Publication' 12-81, page 24, provides information on this butterfly in Ontario. This includes life history notes as given by John Cook and found in the Canadian Entomologist, Vol. XXXVII, No.'s 5 and 6. Scott, page 370, describes the eggs as greenish-white or bluish-white, turning yellowish-white, laid singly on host inflorescence. Larvae feed on flowers and fruit; no nests. Pupae hibernate in silked together litter. One flight in early spring. Dr. Laurence Packer produced a report in 1986/87 - "Status Report on Some Rare Lepidoptera in Southern Ontario" for the World Wildlife Fund and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This report on pages 1 - 11 presents a review and proposes the status of the Frosted Elfin as ENDANGERED. In going back to Scott above, attention is directed to egg-laying and the feeding habit of the larva. The importance of protecting the flowers and seed pods in the Frosted Elfin localities seems self-evident. Thus, pod collection to provide seeds for Lupine propagation should only be in areas outside the Frosted Elfin localities. Also, since the pupae overwinter in the litter, any destruction of ground litter, say by fire, must be avoided. The 1987 population of the Frosted Elfin at the St. Williams locality was at least 3 adults seen in one day. In 1986, 8 adults were observed in one day. Dr. Packer has this population at under 100 adults in 1986. c) Dusted Skipper [Atrytonopsis hianna (Scudder)].

At present, the Dusted Skipper is known from only one locality in Ontario, and that is the Pinery area south from Grand Bend to Ipperwash in Lambton county. The writer thinks there is a possibility of its occurrence in the Lake-of-the-Woods area, which has not been investigated for Skipper populations to any extent.

8 According to Opler & Krizek, page 254, the range of this species is from southern New England west across the Great Lakes states, southern Manitoba and west in the states as noted. Dr. Packer in his report (see under the Frosted Elfin above), page 20, has the proposed status for this species as RARE.

d) Conclusion:

Sections a, band c above present a summary review of the status of the Karner Blue, Frosted Elfin and Dusted Skipper in Ontario. On the basis of all the studies carried out and their findings, the T.E.A. has recommended to the Ministry of Natural Resources that the Karner Blue and Frosted Elfin be protected under The Endangered Species Act, R.S.O. A very serious threat to the Lepidoptera of Ontario is the use of pesticides for the presuMed control of two major pests - the Gypsy and the Spruce/Jack pine Budworms. Unfortunately, the application of Bt. by the Ministry of Natural Resources in selected parts of northern and southern Ontario appears to be most detrimental to the non-target Lepidoptera, and could spell doom to the existing populations of the endangered and rare species. Dr. W.J.D. Eberlie summarizes his findings for a 1987 Bt. sprayed area in Northumberland County in section 4.3 below. Mr. Phil Schappert reports similar fin dings for a Bt. sprayed area near Twin Lakes, Peterborough County. These two areas were sprayed to combat the target species, the Gypsy Moth. Les Kohalmi of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been carrying out research on various Giant Silkmoths of the Saturniidae. In particular, Hyalophora colu.bia and its near kin Hyalophora gloveri and nokomis have been studied in Kenora District. His findings show serious impacts on these populations from Bt. spraying to combat target species - the Budworm. His findings show that local populations of such species of Saturniidae which have existed for millenia in the sprayed areas have been wiped out. In 1987, the Ontario government sprayed DIPEL (a preparation with Bt.) on 40,250 hectares as compared to 103,00 hectares in 1986. Of the total 1987 area, 19,939 hectares were private land. It is of interest to note that the spray program in 1987 included 115 hectares of the St. Williams Forest Nursery lands. is one of the favoured foodplants of the Gypsy Moth. The St. Williams and Pinery oak savannah localities, so critical to the Karner Blue and Frosted Elfin butterflies, are therefore at great risk from pesticides at a period when plant succession is reaching towards its climax phase, thus shading out the oak savannahs and their special flora, such as the Wild Lupine.

4.2 Notes on Brynnis icelus (Scudder a Bareeaa) by Dr. W.J.D. Eberlie

A female Erynnis icelus captured by me in Northumberland Forest in early June laid ova on Aspen (). These ova were purplish-orange in colour, whereas textbooks I have describe the ova as pale green. Also, it is note worthy that while collecting Aspen leaves for the larvae to feed on, I discovered an additional larva on Aspen in the Northumberland Forest on June 20th.

9 •.3 I.pact o~ the Bt_ SprQ Progr_ in IIorth herland County in 1987 by Dr. W. J. 0 • Eberlie.

I made two or three visits to an area near Oak Heights in Northumberland County where spraying with Bt. for the Gypsy Moth was carried out. I noted that the only trees that were defoliated were very small choke cherries. Very slight damage was done to the oak trees in the area and no other trees seemed to be affected. On one occasion on June 25th, I noted many dead or dying nearly full-grown Gypsy Moth larvae and a week or so later I found many Gypsy Moth pupae. I collected sOlie of these and only one adult emerged. The rest were parasitized by a small species of Diptera. The Diptera larvae emerged from the pupae and promptly pupated themselves. These pupae are still in apparent diapause. This area where the spraying was done used to be a good area for Hairstreaks, especially the oak-feeding Hairstreaks. None were seen at all this year, in spite of the fact that the New Jersey Tea was in bloom, as was the Butterfly Weed. Indeed, no butterflies at all were seen in the sprayed area and even Cercyonis pegala, which used to be abundant, was completely absent.

4.4 Occurrence of the Pale Fora (pallida) of T. lineola by Barry Harrison

On June 30th, at Sylvan Park in Scarborough I noticed a pale form of a male T. lineola among the numerous regular forms. At first I thought it was just a worn specimen but on closer observation, I could see that it was a paler form, so I collected it. I telephoned W.M.M. Edmonds and he informed me that it is very un common. In future, I shall be looking for more of this pale form, particularly in the same area.

4.5 Notes on catocala cerQIZES in 1987 by Hal Donly

This species was even more plentiful this year than in 1986. In four consecu tive nights (August 1-4) of baiting around the family cottage in Coe Hill (24), I recorded near 50 cerogama each night. A single tree on the night of Aug. 3rd had between 12 and 15 adults at the bait at one time. The moths seemed to be "fighting" for position as they often collided while hovering about the bait. The most adults I had previously observed on one tree at the same time was five. Also of note was the presence of a flying squirrel on the side of the tree near my bait (it left quickly once my flashlight shone on it) as well as a few tree frogs. I would assume these predators were feeding on the visiting moths, although I did not witness this. Three different forms in addition to the normal were collected from Aug. 1-4. These are as described in Sargent's "Legion of Night". They were:

form "ruperti" (the melanic form) 3 collected form "bunkeri" (dark shading on forewings) 7 collected form "aurella" (yellow basal hairs on hindwings) 1 collected

The yellow inner band on the hindwing was unusually thin on 3 or 4 of the normal specimens collected. I would wonder if one has ever been found without the inner band (i.e. completely dark hindwing with only a yellow fringe).

10 4.6 Notes on the Viceroy (B. archippus) at Hillsburgh by Peter Noyle

On June 13th, with the temperature at 240 C, several adult Viceroy butterflies were seen over a two hour period. Males seemed to be guarding their territory which was about 10 ft. by 30 ft. Aggression flight seemed to be tight circular combat rarely over 7 ft. above the ground, with the interloper making off in a short space of time. Courting flight seems to be a fast parallel flight with one butterfly flying close (less than 12 inches) behind the other. Two pairs observed doing this suddenly shot upwards, disappearing over trees with a height of 30 ft. Individuals take long rests basking on and Dogwood. Feeding was mainly at Buttercups. On June 14th, with clear sunny weather, the temperature at 320 C and a high wind, one was seen ovipositing on Willow.

Note: The so-called courting flight may actually be territorial display (QFH).

4.7 Colony of West Virginia White [A. virginiensis (W.H. Edwards)] in North Mosa Township in Middlesex County by Q.F. Hess

Dave McLeod of London reports that he has found a colony of the West Virginia White in North Mosa Township on May 9th, 1987. The identification has been verified by the R.O.M. The Rev. C.J.S. Bethune recorded this species as occurring at London in one of his lists of Ontario butterflies published by the Entomological Society of Canada over 80 years ago. The North Mosa locality may be the same as the Bethune site, as it is near London, Ontario.

4.9 The Grapevine Epiaenus [~rp6a ep:iaeDDB (Drury)] in Essa: County by Jeff Larson

At 1:40 p.m. on April 13, 1987, a fellow lepidopterist, Steve Pike, and myself observed an unusually elusive day-flying moth at Ojibway Park in Windsor. A second glance revealed the orangey-red hindwing. We noticed that it kept returning to feed at a small willow shrub which was partially in flower. Ignorance can be bliss at times so I collected this colourful little moth not knowing that it could in fact be one of the first Ontario records of this southern species. Having identified it, I thought nothing of it until April 20th. During that week, I noticed that this little moth was showing up in increasing numbers in the area between La Salle and Ojibway Park in Windsor. On April 20th, I stopped at the nature centre at Ojibway Park to visit a good friend, Paul Pratt. Upon walking across the parking lot a moth flew directly at me so I reached out and gently captured it in my cupped hand.

15 When I was talking to Paul Pratt in his office, I released the moth halfway through our conversation. Paul's response was humorous and instantaneous, his voice quavering and his eyes showing his excitement. I gathered from this reaction that Psychomorpha epi.enus might be rare in Ontario. The numbers of this moth appeared to steadily increase in the area until the first week of May. Initially they were observed feeding on willow flowers but their preference appeared to change to hawthorn as blooas appeared about May 1st. They were never found very far from wild grape, with flying activity observed between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p;m. with the peak occurring between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. I noticed a maximum of 200+ moths swarming above tangles of wild grape at La Salle on April 24th. A concerted search revealed. 4 mating pairs and 2 females ovipositing on the underside of grape leaves. Both of the observed females placed groups of 3 to 4 eggs on each potentially expanded leaf before moving on. Unfortunately, I could not determine the exact location of the eggs at a later date but I did notice that some herbivory had taken place on grape leaves in the general area. After May 10th, the number of moths markedly declined with my last observation occurring on May 19th at La Salle. Paul Pratt mentioned that there were two possible previous sight records for this moth in Ontario; Pelee Island and the Toronto area. However, I was told that both of these occurrences were in July. In 1987, Psychomorpha epimenus definitely occurred in large numbers in many locales within Essex county, all in areas with substantial wild grape concentrations. Whether it is a viable reproducing population will be determined in the spring of 1988.

4.10 Encountering ~,.. p6aetoa (Drury) 10 Boron County by Gerry Clements

When one is on a field trip looking for specimens and finds something totally unexpected, one feels elated. Such was the case on May 31st this year when a larva of the Baltimore (Euphydryas phaeton) was found in a wetland area near Varna (13). This larva was feeding on Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum). A search produced no other larvae in this area and no Turtlehead (Chelone glabra) could be found either. The following weekend (June 6th), Ben & Brenda Kulon and I went up to the Carlow area and found several larvae in a wetland, all feeding on C. glabra. It was decided to take one specimen home along with some plant food to put in a terrarium. On the way home we stopped at the Varna site and found several more larvae, all feeding on V. trilobum. We decided to take a specimen from here also, along with its food. Arriving at the Kulon's house, the larvae and their food were put into the terrarium and left outside. Almost immediately, the larva feeding on Turtlehead left this and went over to feed on the Highbush Cranberry. Two days later, both larvae started to pupate. On June 14th, we returned to the Varna site and a search produced no larvae and we could find no pupae either. On the late afternoon of June 22nd, Brenda called and said one Baltimore had emerged. The following day (June 23rd), I left for Varna immediately after work and found 5 fresh Baltimore adults and watched the courtship ritual and eventual mating. All were photographed and none were collected. On subsequent visits to the site (June 26th and 28th), no Baltimores were seen and it is difficult to think where they went?

16 4.11 New Poodplant of Iaclsalia bearici (Grote. RoblDSOD) by Ross A. Layberry

On April 19th, on a wooded trail in an area of long-abandoned farmland, 1.5 miles south of Leitria, Gloucester, Carleton county, Incisalia henrici was flying in numbers far surpassing anything I had seen since I found the colony in 1980. I had searched several times in other years but had been unable to find larvae of this species, although at this and several other colonies the elfins are extremely localized where there are concentrations of a shrub whose newly opened leaves, when the adults are flying, are an odd brownish colour. I marked several of the shrubs and returned on May 18th. After several hours of beating and searching the shrubs without success, I gathered several hundred twigs and bud clusters and took them home for closer examination. I eventually found one white lycaenid egg, tucked into the angle between a flower bud and a twig. The shrub was now easily identifiable as Black Buckthorn, Rhamnus frangula L. (Rhamnaceae). I have been unable to find any previous records of Henry's Elfin feeding on this plant, or even on this family! On May 22nd, I found two more eggs and a first instar larva at a colony on Davidson Road, Gloucester, and on May 28th another egg on Dolman Ridge, Gloucester. All were on R. frangula, and all eggs were situated exactly as the first one. The first egg hatched on May 19th. The larva did not eat the egg shell, but immediately started nibbling on the outer green parts of the flower buds. After about three days, it started eating holes into the interior of the bud. The buds were too small for even a first instar larva to get inside, so it spent most of its time with its rear prolegs firmly on the green bud-stalk, with the head and thorax inside the bud. This would seem to be a risky thing to do, for unpollinated or damaged buds drop off, taking the bud-stalks with them. After about five days, the larva was clearly a hairstreak or elfin, very different from the larvae of Celastrina argiolus, the only other possible species at this location. About this time it started eating small holes in the smallest leaves, although it sometimes ate flowers when I gave it a fresh twig of foodplant. Prom day five to day nine, it ate Common Buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica L. which I failed to distinguish from R. frangula On June 6th (day 19) it changed colour from light green to reddish brown, but continued to feed. On June 8th it stopped feeding and crawled off the twig, the first time I had seen it move more than half an inch. It crawled around the bottom of its container until June 10th, when it pupated. It did not tie itself down but just lay loose on the glass bottom of the jar. The other eggs did not hatch, but the larva from Davidson Road ate normally until June 11th, when it changed colour and continued to eat. Prom the behaviour of the first larva, I assumed that the normal pupation site was on the ground, but I wanted to know if the larvae dropped from the foodplant or if they crawled down. I cut a seven-foot long branch of R. frangula and 'planted' it in a large flower pot full of soil, covered with a thick layer of damp, dead leaves of R. frangula. The branch was planted at an angle of 45o . The larva was put on a cluster of buds at the very tip of the branch, so that if it dropped it would miss the flowerpot. It started to feed immediately and continued to do so until at least 1:30 a.m. At 7:30 the next day (June 12th) it could not be found on the branch, and at 5 p.m. I found it, upside-down on the underside of one of the lowest layers of leaves, i.e., between the leaf and the soil. I checked its position five times in the next three days and found that it had moved three to six inches each time. It finally pupated, lightly attached to the underside of one of the lowest layer of leaves, between noon and 5 p.m. on June 15th. It must have crawled down the branch; if it had dropped it would have missed the flowerpot by at least four feet.

17 During the summer, I checked several other colonies to see if any had R. cath artica without R. frangula. Only at one, near the Ottawa Health Science Centre, were most of the Buckthorn of this species, but even there were a few plants of R. frangula. At three colonies (Constance Bay, Galetta and Mountain Road, Gatineau Park, Quebec) there were no Buckthorn of either species, so there must be at least one other foodplant utilised by Henry's Elfin in the Ottawa area. I tried to keep both pupae on my apartment balcony, under the layer of leaves in the flowerpot, with occasional light watering. By September, both were dead, presumably because I could not keep the conditions sufficiently stable. ******************* *

5. GENERAL SUMMARY OF ONTARIO LEPIDOPTERA IN 1987.

The first eight months of 1987 were warmer and drier than normal in most of the Province of Ontario. The flight season began about two weeks earlier than usual because of the early spring and ended in the first part of November, which is about average. In south-central regions, most of the species still flying disappeared after the first week in October. In general, during the 1987 flight season, most butterfly and skipper species were present in normal numbers. However, there were species which appeared to be below, and in some instances, much below normal. A few species were abundant and some were encountered in areas not previously recorded. In particular, Artogeia rapae and Coenonympha inornata were above normal. The Cabbage White had a small, but noticeable migration easterly along Highway # 11, between Longlac and Hearst in late June. The Inornate Ringlet continued to expand its range in Huron County. It was found nearly everywhere in northeastern Ontario. Butterfies which seemed to be below normal in the 1987 populations included the following:- Colias eurytheme, C.interior, Satyrium calanus, S.liparops, Clossiana selene, Polygonia interrogationis, P.faunus, Aglais milberti and Danaus plexippus. The Monarch appeared to be reduced by one-third over the 1986 season which also showed reductions over previous years. The first Monarchs reached the south of Ontario about May 1st. The fall migra tion started in late July, peaked around August 24th to September 1st and tapered off quickly after September 15th. Migrations of southern and western species, except for Vanessa cardui and Junonia coenia, were stronger than in 1986. These migrants included Hylephila phyleus and Psychomorpha epimenus into the Windsor area, Phoebis sennae near Point Pelee and P. philea at Toronto. Pyrisitia lisa came into Toronto, Elora, Windsor and north Lambton County and Euptoieta claudia into the St. Mary's (14) and Toronto areas. One of the highlights of the 1987 season was the discovery of A. virginiensis in North Mosa township (8) on May 6th by Dave McLeod of London. This could well be the locality where Rev. C.J.Bethune found the species and included it in his 1896 list as occurring at London. Range extensions or new localities for certain species were again reported for Ontario in 1987 as follows:-

Besides the Grapevine Epimenis influx in the Windsor area, Catocala cerogama was more abundant in some areas of south-central Ontario than in 1986, according to Hal Donly. Jeff Larson reports the Tersa Sphinx (Xylophanes tersa) near Kingsville (1) on September 24th. One extremely fresh specimen was encountered at Arner Stop. He also reports the Ironweed Borer Moth (Papaipema cerussata) in the Windsor area on October 5th and 7th: **** ** *** * * ***** * * * * 6. 1987 SUMMARY OF ONTARIO BUTTERFLIES AND SKIPPERS.
