After Townsend’s business empire faltered, the commu- nity was renamed Glenora, meaning “Mouth of the Glen,” by Joshua Ingalls. The largest settlement within the township is the Village of Dundee, which was incorporated in 1848. Other communities in Starkey include the hamlets of Rock Stream, Lakemont, Starkey, and Shannon’s Corners. In recent years, new development has occurred along the Seneca lakefront bringing Starkey’s year-round population to almost 3,573. Starkey is home to several favorite local wineries such as Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, Glenora Wine Cellars, Fulk- erson’s Winery, Ashley Lynn Winery, Rock Stream Vine- yards, Hickory Hollow Winery, Highland Cellars, Magnus Ridge, Shaw Vineyards, Bellangelo, and Starkey’s Landing.

The Seneca Paper Mill was built in 1884. The foundation was made from stone blocks taken from the many locks of the abandoned Crooked Lake Canal. The mill’s products were newsprint and a variety of papers. In 1889 the mill started gener- ating electricity for Yates Electric Light & Power, Penn Yan’s first electric system.
